Not a spoiler because it's not really covered in the show, but the Epstein drive technology was shared with Earth in exchange for it's independence from Earth. It was game changing and made travel to the Belt and the outer planets in reach and practical. The book has a great description of Epstein's flight which says that a hundred years later, with a good scope, you can still Epstein's ship travelling out into the big empty, making it the longest, greatest funeral in the history of mankind.

2020-09-06 17:02:57 +0000 UTCAs for the decision regarding the protomolecule: it was discovered by accident within Phoebe, an extra solar "rock" captured in Saturns gravity well aeons ago before humans even existed on earth. Was Phoebe targeted at earth and just accidentally captured by Saturn as Dresden implied ? Maybe. But a looooong time (millions of years) has past since then, without any alien showing up (wondering what went wrong with Phoebe) as far as we know. The protomolecule didn't do anything for all this time until we discovered it on Phoebe and started messing with it (trying to conrol it). It is not unreasonable to believe that the best way of action is to destroy the last known sample and hope you got rid of it all. Alien lifeform or Alien technology... humankind is obviously not equipped to deal with something like this. We might destroy ourselves in the process (either because of a science experiment gone wrong like Eros, or because all the fighting about whoever controls the protomolecule). Remember Miller and why he killed Dresden in the first place? This is kinda the same argument.
