June Bonus Story #3 -- Stepmom Vs. Son Over Food :/

Food insecurity and hunger is real.. and this story shows it.

This is such a complex issue.. and I don't think we realized how passionate about it we were until this story. Going to be making a big effort to get involved with local initiatives.  What do you think about this story, and any other ways to get active in this?

I asked my manager at one job why they don't donate it. They basically said for liability reasons if someone has an allergic reaction or gets sick they don't want a lawsuit. I suggested possibly having a waiver or some other form to protect them if that's all they were worried about and they just brushed it off. It probably is a money thing sadly.

Yep it is hard to buy greens and fresh fruit cause it is so expensive in the US

Me to. When I lived in my car at 16 I worked fast food just to get a meal, had a cheap gym membership to get a shower. And worked another job during the day. It was hard. But my boss at my ff job realized I was living in my car just to finish school and she let me come stay in a spare room at her house until I graduated.

Lmao ngl my heart inches closer to Morgan after hearing about her n those moldy apples. Yes ma’am 👏 happy for food conservation pero liiiiike….imagine playing food roulette every day 🤣 gal livin on the edge

Random correction maybe but Canadian here, and I just want to reply to Justin's comment: in Canada, the cheapest food is also the worst food, fast food and transformed food. Produce are very expansive here and our food inflation is ridiculous

i have never understood why companies get so mad about this kinda stuff.. it’s just going in the garbage anyway

Paige Vidler

Lol I feel so seen about eating expired stuff

I know this is old but I just recently got patreon. I worked as a manager at Wendy’s for a few years. On christmas eve you are supposed to throw everything away since the store is closed christmas day. There was close to 3 gallons of chili, lots of left over hamburgers, and a good amount of chicken nuggets. I almost got fired because i took it all to a homeless shelter.

This lady’s a c.u.n.t. POS human. Never heard a worse story on your podcast.

I will starve before even my neighbors 16-year-old kid would starve. Straight up she is an ASSHOLE

Okay so I’m like 8 months late but I just joined your Patreon and I’m binge-listening at work on the food scarcity thing, I try to give away food to homeless people in our area before it goes bad but I will never be at a restaurant and eat more than what I’m comfortable with just because it pains me to waste food. My s.o. is of the mindset of “I’d rather get sick than waste food” and I think that’s a form of trauma passed down from generations that didn’t have enough food and while I understand, I will never harm myself trying to eat more than my body can just to see an empty plate. Sometimes I bag to go, but sometimes I just know that i wouldn’t will eat it next day/ next meal so I do not ask for to go boxes very often.

Wowww this one came for my throat. My mom was a stay at home mom and my dad lost his six figure income and NEVER got his ass together. 10 years later we were homeless and my mom (disabled) had been working 80+ hours a week for food/necessities and my dad still didn’t have a job. Good on her for forming the boundary with the husband but don’t drag the kids into it.

FOOD WASTE! Oh my gosh, it pains me. I heard of a restaurant in, I believe it was India, where the chef keeps a refrigerator outside the back kitchen for people to come and take leftovers. Any leftovers at the end of the night and she also has her staff ask their customers at the end of their meal if they want to box up their leftovers to take home or to put it in the fridge and most people choose to put it in the fridge. I wish that there was a way to provide these fridges for restaurants, especially here in SF. I’m sure a lot of them would be willing to do it, as well as it being some sort of tax write off

Go Dr Alejandra PhD! I would love for future guests to be trained in fields of psychology/social work/ physicians that are familiar or have extensive training on subjects like food insecurity. Having people who know a lot and can give facts along with experience is really cool to hear. But I love hearing the passion that you guys have for these topics. Maybe at some point( the podcast murder with my husband did this recently) the pod could donate some of the Patreon proceeds to different charities that support people who need food or shelter or just support. We can all vote on different ones and we help support those causes. Especially with Roe v wade, planned parenthood could use donations. So something to that effect. And I swear you said there was an update..👀

I was a bit confused on this part: OP says she is working part time I think, kids are all school age, so what is preventing her from working additional hours/finding a new job if the father is actually struggling to find something so badly? Or at least trying? Seems like she is putting most of the financial responsibility for the entire family on the father (not that he's perfect either).

SUCH BULLSHIT. I would way rather go to an event and have to wait a couple extra minutes for more food or have it run out than see it wasted.. so fucked up.

i work at a bar that serves food and has banquets for wealthy companies and their employees. they have around 5 items like wings, pizza, sliders ect that get unlimited refills for 2-3 hours, and any leftover food gets thrown away and it is HEARTBREAKING. employees aren’t allowed to eat it, even the customers aren’t allowed to take it home. the corporate excuse is because the food could potentially be sitting out for too long causing the food to not be safe to eat. TOTAL bs. i’ve seen platters of 100+ untouched wings right in the trash. 5 pizzas at a time. while the employees don’t even get a food discount (technically we pay more for food than customers even because we tip out on all of the sales we ring in). rich people are ruining the world
