A while back I got some copic markers to try to draw more on paper with and study color that way. A while back I got a big book of Mario art from Dark Horse that had great old illustrations from each mario game (up to 2017). Just the other day, I dusted both the markers and the book off and decided to just copy some mario drawings cus I love them so and wanted to do something mindless that still hurt my hands like gaming does but I have at least something to show for it. Here are some drawings from that. From SMB1, Lost Levels, and SMB2.
It hits me that there's no real Art here. I am not conforming these characters to My Style. I don't even know what My Style is, really. I am simply copying the Mario look to the best of my ability cus I love to look at them and genuinely aspire to a similar form. There is something about aping a style that is truly more interesting to me than thinking I need to find my own. I don't know what my style is, tho you might. Other people on the outside can look and go "that's KC's style" but I can't. I really am just not looking to do so. What comes out, comes out. This is just one way for me to control that, as I sometimes feel like I can't otherwise.
