Actually...I noticed something, a *really small* detail that could confirm that ondeed it's the 2nd option. It's pretty simple (and I could be wrong, but it's still something); if you look closely, you can see that Matthaus' tomb/altar (I think it's a tomb though) is slightly lower than Martha's, and it could symbolize that Matthaus is actually "under", in a sense of "under the lake".

I am honestly leaning more on the second option. I really don't know how honorable the blasphemous serpent deity is with his promises and deals, but it was said that Matthaus sacrificed himself in order to spare Martha from the gloom of the lake. Matthaus would become the vessel known as Marvpyas to ensure that Martha would be free to roam the land once again while seemingly being Immortal (in terms of aging). The swan might represent a Martha that is free but mourning. Imagine how horrible it must be to know that your own sibling is doomed to forever drown in the lake and being nothing but a deity's puppet, while you get to be free (though that's debatable). I'm sure that you being the reason he did this and that you can't do anything about it doesn't help.

Trying to understand the symbolism in this picture...we can see a statue of a swan looking downwards, as if it was suffering. I suppose that the tomb on the left is Matthaus', that awaits Martha (whose tomb is the one on the right) in the Necropolis. Or it could be Martha suffering because of Matthaus' death, but I firmly believe that it's the first option.
