Or, The Weird Attachments Episode.
Moving beyond Jungian theory, this episode is about encountering The Other in contemporary society and the internet age. We discuss Sighswoon's concept of "tethers," Netflix's 'Baby Reindeer,' and philosopher Byung-Chul Han's The Expulsion of the Other. As we seek to explore how The Other impacts us beyond basic projection, we take a deep dive into the nature of "the gaze," and the variety of weird dynamics it's able to produce—we discuss stalking, limerence, seduction, obsession, surveillance, gossip, rivalries, imaginary conversations, and the parasocial, as well as why these increasingly weird attachments are becoming more common today. We end with a discussion of the dwindling role of The Other in today's world, the real nature of the "inner audience," and the deeply concerning state of the soul in a world without difference.
