Thoughts before Game 4 of the World Series
Added 2024-10-29 14:40:27 +0000 UTCThe Yankees have 1-4 games remaining in their season and they almost certainly will not win the World Series, but they won four straight games and the Dodgers lost four straight games plenty of times this year. Stranger things have happened (have they though?). The path to a comeback is obvious:
Aaron Judge must make an impact. I don’t just mean poke a single or take a walk. He has to move the needle in a big way. A homer, multiple hits with men on base, etc.
Every hitter other than Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton must wake up. Those two are hitting .311/.406/.700 (201 wRC+) in the postseason. The rest of the Yankees: .199/.308/.290 (75 wRC+).
Luis Gil has to pitch well. Certainly better than Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt. The MLB leader in walks against one of baseball’s most disciplined lineups is a rough matchup though.
The bullpen must remain stout. Those guys have been so good the last two games. They put up zero after zero and gave the offense a chance to get back into Games 2 and 3.
The Yankees have to play a tight, clean game. No dumb baserunning, no defensive mistakes, no bad sends by the third base coach, etc. I’m not sure if they’re capable of this, but it’s necessary.
Get a little lucky. At this point, the Yankees need to play well and also catch some breaks. A call goes their way, a lucky bounce, the Dodgers make an error, etc. They need help.
Judge went 0-for-3 with a walk in Game 3 and is 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts in the World Series. The walk was his first unintentional walk in 33 plate appearances. Since Game 1 of the ALCS. I mean, how? That is the surest sign the postseason (lack of) performance is in Judge’s head as much as his mechanics. Even when he slumps during the regular season, he still takes his walks, but not now.
In Game 3, Judge walked and also drove a ball to the outfield, something he hadn’t done in a while, so we just have to hope those are signs he’s about to snap out of it. That’s what we’ve been reduced to. Hoping a player who is, objectively, the best hitter in the world, is snapping out of it because he took ball four and hit a ball hard in the air. The Yankees are down 3-0 for many reasons. Judge is easily No. 1.
(Since 2017, Judge is a .291/.409/.611 (176 wRC+) hitter in the regular season and a .196/.303/.430 (98 wRC+) hitter in the postseason. Maybe I’ll do the research to confirm this one day, but that has to be one of the worst postseason performances relative to regular season performance in baseball history among players with 250+ postseason plate appearances. Call it what it is: Judge is one of the worst postseason performers ever.)
You have to squint, but you can see the path to sending the series back to Los Angeles. Beat the Dodgers and their bullpen game in Game 4, give the ball to Gerrit Cole in Game 5, and there you go. The Yankees have to hit though. They sleep walked (slept walk?) through innings 1-8 in Games 2 and 3 before a too little, too late rally in the ninth. I guess it’s good they showed fight late, but it ain’t enough.
The Yankees haven’t had a lead since the tenth inning of Game 1. They need to play from ahead for once. Score early, play with a lead, and maybe everyone settles down and settles in. Some of these at-bats the last two games have been atrocious. Look at the fastballs the Yankees took in Game 3:

That’s 29 sinkers and four-seamers taken for called strikes. Some bad calls there*, sure, but 29 fastballs taken for strikes. The last time the Yankees took 29 sinkers and four-seamers for called strikes was Sept. 18th, 2020, and that was a 12-inning game. The last time they did it in a nine-inning game was March 31st, 2019. That was 786 regular season and postseason games ago.
* The umpiring has been really bad this World Series, no? For both teams. I usually don’t make a big deal about the umps, it’s a hard job and they’re the best umpires in the world, but this is a rough look for MLB in the World Series.
I have to give the Dodgers credit. They’ve shown the Yankees a lot of spin (40.2% breaking balls in three games) and they’ve completely fouled up their approach. The Yankees are sitting on spin and letting hittable fastballs go by. It’s hard not to admire the Dodgers. Their game planning and execution is so good. They have elite talent and they elevate it with elite planning and execution. It’s really something.
One game at a time, one at-bat at a time, one pitch at a time, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. It’s time to hope for a miracle. The Yankees are down 3-0 because they deserve to be down 3-0, and even just forcing a Game 5 will require a complete reversal of their play through three games. They have to hit better, they have to pitch better, they have to defend better, they have to run the bases better. Other than that, the Yankees have the Dodgers right where they want them.

Can someone please tell Smoltz Dodger Stadium is MORE of a hitter’s park than YS3 and has a slightly higher HR factor!

2024-10-29 21:53:45 +0000 UTCthrowing Jazz in the 4 spot because he’s a lefty is classic modern-Yankees. if you’re committed to alternating R-L hitters, why not bump up the guy with a .538 OBP (Rizzo) to extend the lineup and increase the odds of runners on for Giancarlo?

2024-10-29 21:21:08 +0000 UTCRight prior to the start of the World Series, an acquaintance asked me if the Yankees would fire Boone if they didn't win the series. I told him no, he had secured his job one more year by making it to the World Series, and I meant that since they hold an option year for 2025 that they can simply trip. Their performance has been so bad I now wonder if that's true. My guess is yes because I don't see them firing Boone, going through a new manager hiring process, all while trying to sign back Soto (maybe he loves Boone) and figure out other upgrades. All my way of speculating that about one day after the series ends and Yankee fans are mad/depressed, expect the Yankees to announce Boone is returning.

2024-10-29 19:03:35 +0000 UTCSaddest thing is how much the rest of the team has let Giancarlo down. I have a decent amount of faith Judge will get another shot at a title, but hard to say the same for Big G. All we can do is hope I guess.

2024-10-29 18:25:12 +0000 UTCWith the season on the line, your ace should be pitching tonight. 2009 it woulda been CC fighting dudes to taking the ball with the season about to be over. The fact that Cole can't go is just a microcosm of this whole team. Too soft, too unclutch, and too unmotivated. It's the biggest stage of their lives, some will never have this chance again in their career and you have guys sleepwalking like it's a series in May. What a bumming end to the year. But a barely .500 ball club has been who the Yankees were all second half. I desperately hope the franchise makes wholesale changes this offseason in response to feeling embarrassed on a national level. Signing Soto alone this offseason won't do us any good.

2024-10-29 17:27:32 +0000 UTCHey Mike - On the Game 2 recap, when you said "The ninth inning rally was Lucy holding the football. I got my hopes up but should have known better." it was absolutely spot-on. After thinking about it, that pretty much sums up the past 6-7 years. There could be a remake of this starring Hal, Cashman or Boone (your choice) as Lucy, and all Yankee fans as Charlie Brown. Until we get someone else to hold the football, we will continue to end up flat on our backs wondering what we were thinking.

2024-10-29 16:35:21 +0000 UTCA commentator on FanGraphs did the research on Judge. Judge has the biggest magnitude drop in wRC+ from the regular season to the playoffs for all players with at least 2500 reg season PA and 200 playoff PA since 1995, with a minimum of a 115 wRC+ in the regular season. Top 5 are Judge (-75), Reggie Sanders (-60), Jim Thome (-53), Robinson Cano (-51), Will Smith (-50)

2024-10-29 16:31:30 +0000 UTCYes there is no game 5 if you don't win tonight. The yankees should pitch their best option to win game 4. Gil on full rest is a better option than Cole on short rest.

2024-10-29 15:49:43 +0000 UTCThey have to win 4 games in a row. Cole is obviously not 100% anyway but even if he were using him on short rest does not make a lot of sense. Gil is either pitching game 4 or game 5. Might as well attack those two games with Gil and Cole on full rest instead of Cole on short rest and Gil.
Kyle
2024-10-29 15:42:02 +0000 UTCIf Cole is healthy-ish, no thought about him on short rest in Game 4? Season on the line? 300m and cant go in the WS?

2024-10-29 14:58:58 +0000 UTCPast results obviously don't predict future performance here, but Gil did face LAD back in June (toward the end of his great run of form) and was quite good until being left out way too long. He threw 4.1 shutout innings before giving up a couple of hits and was allowed to face Kike and Betts - 3rd time - with two on and a 2-run lead (K, 2-run 2B or "DBL" as TBS would say), then allowed back out for the 6th (!) to get a couple outs and give up a solo HR to Teoscar. Hopefully he can do something similar with a MUCH quicker hook.... https://www.espn.com/mlb/playbyplay/_/gameId/401569452

2024-10-29 14:50:48 +0000 UTCNot all six of the things you identified have to go right, Mike, but I would say at least four of them do. Getting a good starting performance from Gil and scoring some runs early are really paramount. Let’s all continue to believe while we still have hope.

2024-10-29 14:45:07 +0000 UTCHey, Mike. I've been following you for many, many years. It's been a fun ride this year, but this is unfortunately the true talent level of this team as presently constructed. Hopefully we'll get to celebrate a World Series win together at some point. Thank you for the content and for your authenticity.
