Granny was the matriarch of J pod (part of the southern resident orcas) and was said to have lived into the hundreds. Further research discovered that may not be likely, maybe putting her at 50 or even 80 years old when she finally passed away in 2016. That's still a long life for a killer whale in the wild!
What's fascinating about how they came to these conclusions was the whale who often accompanied her, named J1 Ruffles. Researchers assumed he was her last child. Female orcas stop having calves by forty, so estimating his age, they did some math and determined Granny's birth year to be 1911. But then they later discovered Ruffles wasn't even her son to begin with! He wasn't even part of the same pod! Ruffles himself passed away at age 57 which is triple the average lifespan for a male orca.
Matriarchs are crucial to a pod's survival. Through her, all knowledge is passed down to her children, and grand children. Be it 50, 80, or 100 years, what things did Granny see in her lifetime? What knowledge did she hold that we still don't understand about their kind?
