2024-11-05 17:45:45 +0000 UTCAs an animal rehab facility working near the area where the peanut situation happened, it's the guys own fault. 1: The guys didn't care enough about peanut to get the paperwork in asap and just assumed he would get away with it. DEC takes this stuff very seriously. 2: Rabies vector species (the raccoon) are extremely controlled for good reason. There's like a year of training you have to go through to register to take them in and often get vaccinated for rabies ahead of time. This guy just wanted to use his animals for clout and didn't care enough about them to do the fairly simple work. Sucks for the animals but people like him make us all look bad and lead randos to think they can just do whatever they want with wild animals. Rant over but this issue has been a hot topic in my home lately and I needed to vent.

2024-11-05 15:20:15 +0000 UTCOn of the things I’ve been thinking about more and more (outside the obvious reactionary urge) is the purpose of transphobia in the political calculus. And I really do wonder if it is a case of a group of people whose very existence is overly gate kept and medicalised - due to their needs and wants - being the easiest group to force into private healthcare. Like, what is the purpose of GPs arguing that it’s too complicated for them to deal with patients who are on HRT for typical medical needs? The only outcome is more trans people will look for more of their healthcare to be covered privately - either DIYing more than just their hormones or paying a private practice for the privilege. Either way, a (small) population are unpeopled enough to not get access to NHS care and grow the private healthcare sector. Introduce more and more people into this stream - “well, your long term disability is too difficult for your GP to handle, so go to this private practice”, “we can’t expect all GPs to specialise in paediatrics / geriatric care” and slowly things are turned over to a privatised system. Yes - the bigotry is there to begin with that makes them target us; but oppressing us also serves the private market.
