Kinds of Keirness

As the Labour-taking-bribes scandal runs on into its second month (out of god knows how many), we look at how it’s actually intimately connected to the private sector bonanza we saw at party conference. We also take a look at Rachel Reeves rewriting UK borrowing rules to take investment into account as something other than a cost (good), and how this is likely to be used to fund further private sector giveaways (bad). Also under discussion: Meta’s drive to put its glasses on everyone (bad if it works) and OpenAI’s gargantuan new funding round (funny).

I read a book a long time ago about a smuggler in the 70s who didn't carry a gun but instead just carried a single hand grenade which in a sticky situation he would kind of just pull the pin and drop it and see what happens; I think of it often in these situations

yeah that's what I was thinking, I have no idea how it would actually work in bank accounting but they're probably like shitcoin holders after the rug, either this stock is genuinely worth nothing at liquidation or there's a casino chance it bounces back

I think another reason why Musk won't get called on his Twitter debt is the banks know he'll sell his Tesla stock to make the payment, which will crash the price and probably cause some other financial implosions.

love too hear about a place that's implementing extreme ideological austerity and sliding into developing country status lmao absolutely unlike my canada-inhabiting ass who's going to get inflicted exactly that over the next few years when the Conservatives come into power again

I heard an assessment of AI about a year ago that referenced Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" that essentially argued as art becomes more automated it has to become louder to actually say anything and becomes more utilitarian, which ultimately just lead to its use as fascist propaganda. The last year really has been a total validation of that

When people ask me why I listen to a British technology/political podcast though I live in central Massachusetts. It's for the same reason people love watching trashy reality tv. It's nice to know that the U.S. at least has competition in degradation and inhumanity.

The joke about "Euston station, brought to you by Leon", is actually how trains work in Japan. Japanese rail companies get to rent out the super valuable space around train stations, and it's massively profitable.
