DisplayEx Tool, A Upcoming New Project

I'm pleased to finally be at the point where I feel more comfortable formally announcing this new project!

This tool will help users be able to make stunning background images for use with the DisplayEx mods (And SNES Classic too, technically). Each background you create will have a perfectly fitted viewport/window where the emulator output will display, while having whatever custom imagery you want in the left over space. The tool supports making the backgrounds for all different display modes, like Pixel Perfect, 4x3, etc. And with DisplayEx's own "Fit to ____" options.

It supports all 6 platform apps, as well as there being ZebraEngine support thrown in too.

I've done my best to provide and support a full array of customization options... like Tiling, Stretching, or independently adjusting each side of the selected background image. You can scale or offset the selected background image to line it up just how you want.

You can add and adjust a drop shadow.

And you can set one of 3 frame styles. 4 if you count None. Frames in the context of this app are borders around the center viewport. You can select a simple single color, a preset image, or a option that uses the concept of both. Frames can have their size/scale adjusted, or corners rounded. Users can make, add and share their own frames too.

When done, just click save, copy over to your database and rename just as you would any background.

This app is not out yet, but will be available to my Patreons when its ready. I just felt I should announce it at this time. This project should not be a major one like CaVE or the mods. Meaning, it shouldn't be updated or maintained often. Ideally, I get it to a state I am happy with, release it, and thats that. Foreseeable updates would just be if I can think of a new feature to add, a way of improving an existing one, or simply updating to maintain support with any additions/changes to the NSO apps.

Here are some preview images.

Comments

I cant revert posts to drafts here, so I will just leave this up and post this disclaimer. Sadly... I got caught up with a bit too much fun and pride in my work on this tool, and the reception has not been what I hoped. To the point of very abruptly spoiling my fun, and making me feel like an idiot for my pride in it. The project will still probably be released some day, just not as soon as I was hoping for. Work on projects like these has to be about fun for me. I learned that a few years ago. And with the fun lost for the moment, I should take a step back. There was only a couple things left to work on anyway. Some Alpha Masking for the image frames, and a improved drop shadow for the same type of frames that need that Alpha Masking. Both challenging improvements I needed some momentum to help see me through. Yes, there is the Skins or Themes tab too. But that was slated to be a post release feature, as its only useful for a few people right now. I just wanted to ensure there was space reserved for it in the app. Beyond that, any more work would just be on adding and refining the roster of stock image frames.
