TLB Audio Quality Survey

Hey listeners! We have a question for you. In the course of editing recent episodes, I (Esther) have grown frustrated with the quality of our audio. Since the show started, we've been working with a starter USB mic, a cheap Blue Yeti, with a "bidirectional" gimmick that lets it record both of our voices. But since it's not a great setup, it leads to a lot of peaking and blow-outs which, to my ear, negatively affect the quality of our sound.

With that in mind, Hannah and I are debating upgrading to a more professional audio setup. But before we do, we wanted to get your perspectives on the issue. We ask that you be as honest as possible, we really won't take it personally! If you've noticed the same audio issues, like frequent blow-outs and crunchy sound, please let us know in the poll or in the comments below. We put a lot of effort into this show and we want that effort to be reflected in the quality of the end product. Again, I want to stress that your frankness is appreciated. We want your true and honest take as listeners. Thanks as always for your support!

I should say that I don't really notice the issues but I will also say: I don't generally notice little creaks or bumps or what not unless I'm actively listening for them.

I think what’s difficult for us is that if the gain is low, our voices are quiet, because the space of our recording setup doesn’t let us get close to the mic easily. But if we turn it up to compensate, we get the issues.

I have noticed issues, and the quality could be improved, but I don't think the Yeti is the problem. Peaking and blowouts is a gain problem that doesn't require a new microphone. What I mostly notice is non-vocal noises: clicks, creaks, accidentally bumping the mic. This does require adjustments to the environment to fix, but not necessarily a new mic. In the moments where it is just your voices, you two sound good.
