I wanted to make some true analog footage... (Lazy Posy)

So I went down the rabbit hole to find the best way to do that (again) on a budget. And captured some old footage along the way. The "Or is it device" unboxing poll is almost 50/50, oh dear, 'polarization' 😁

Just make sure you are de-interlacing it properly. The PAL/NTSC output should always be 50p/60p so that each field is preserved. Otherwise, the resulting file has only half the motion and it looks weird.

true but i find it a hassle and in the end you always need to deinterlace it anyway :) Interlaced stills look better though.

For capturing via USB, you can grab an I-O Data GV-USB2 and capture using OBS. I personally recommend using yadif-2× (or whatever it's called) to get a full 50Hz (or 60Hz) capture. Stay away from any other USB based capture devices, they all suck. If you've got an older PC, you can also get a tuner card. I use one based on the SAA7134 chip, and the quality is pretty solid. If you've got enough money, technical knowledge and time, you can try using a vhs-decode based direct RF decode, those yield the absolute best quality for analogue mediums. All of the above doesn't apply to DV mediums, with those it's best to use a FireWire transfer. These transfers just copy the raw datastream from the tape over to your PC, preserving all quality and giving you a 1:1 lossless capture.

I have a vcr setup here on my desk. I use it to convert my videos to vhs so I can use it if I need that vhs look in my videos. I got my VCR at a thrift store for around $20.

I'd be interested in hearing notes here! I know that the deinterlacing in Resolve is good, but for older noisy footage I have no idea if that matters (or is even true). What would you recommend for the capture - was OBS the best choice?

You can encode h.264 as interlaced and have a player e.g. VLC deinterlace it at playback time :)

Oh, these old cameras are my speciality! If you have any questions about digitizing properly or what to buy or any of the like, let me know! I'd be more than happy to help.
