I’ve been thinking a lot about the way I work. Photography is so seasonal here. We still don’t have an indoor spot to shoot here. The cold and gloom of winter makes for short to non-existent shoots, and as soon as the warm weather comes it’s like my schedules is packed to the limits.
Maybe I should adopt a squirrel strategy shoot all spring and summer. Then do my editing come the winter months.

Something I almost never do is shoot BTS. It’s just something that doesn’t really occur to me. Put down my real camera and shoot with my phone? No thank you.
But I do always let models or models friends/partners shoot some if they are present and want to do so!
So while Poppyseed was shooting one I was doing a little light test to make sure everything would look good. And maybe this counts as BTS? I dunno.

At times our yard looks like a fairy tale. The tall grasses of summer rise and fall. They make yellow the earth. I've become used to watching the slow passage of time. The world is opening. The world is calling.
I'm not sure I am ready to go.
I enjoy watching the tall grasses grow. The blooms on blooms on blooms among them.

It’s early March and I can see it in the arrival of the small kidney shaped leaves that appear as soon the weather hits the 50’s for a day. Spring is coming.
The lesser celandine will bloom soon after covering the ground and a layer of green leaves and yellow flowers. It transforms the entire yard for a week. The smaller flowers are so difficult to shoot, but I think if I have Nicole lay among them and hold one of our early daisies we can make something int...

Hi there, its me.
I'm back and planning on posting here consistently again. I spent the last week going through all of my old posts and making sure the galleries are posted in entirety on here.
In the interest of expediting this I have left dead links on posts, but all of the photos I am allowed to share from those sets are now posted in the gallery above.
I have had to remove a small amount of my work that is no longer compliant with the current TOS. Its actu...

I've been reflecting on my work a lot lately. I think that comes with putting together a book, and meeting goals you set for yourself. I find myself in a weird place where I am nearing having finished a lot of the long term goals I set in my early 20's
I'm still young, but I do want to slow down. I do want to be able to take the time it takes to think, and recall what I want to do. It feels like I have been going going going even in this massive slowdown. ...

8 Minutes at sunset with Sienna is all you need to create incredible images. It was quite cold, and the winter light fades so fast here in the North West. So when we decided to knock out a shoot with what time the day would provide us we knew we had to make it quick.
Turns out that is plenty of time. Sienna is such a fantastic poser that we made great images easily and ran back indoors before the sun had even set.

Navigating the world and how I continue to work and keep a roof over our head has proved to be quite the challenge! But I am stating to do social distance shoots, and am excited to share this amazing result.
Shooting with a mask sucks, really no getting around it. But creating again is well worth the struggle of not knowing if any images I am taking are truly in focus.
I hope you are all well, and enjoy this shoot

I miss these forests, I can only hope that we can return in the not so distant future. Working with Fox is such a dream. They are able to transform a space with their posing into something unimaginable.

The pandemic has brought working with new people to a halt, but forced Nicole and I to focus on projects that maybe otherwise we wouldn't have. We've wanted to shoot with all of the flowers, but rarely found ourselves both home, ready to shoot, and available on the days the light was perfect
Now we have nothing but ourselves and what we grow to create with. I don't know if we will have a book finished when this is over, but we won't be far off.
Ps. I'll be work...

We are taking quarantine to pursue a new project. Sheltering in place means more rapidly pursueing something that may have taken us a decade. We'll by no means finish this in these months at home, but we will have a huge start.

Its a day to celebrate the little things friends! I've always felt suffering in silence is non-productive, but some times the shock of what is causing your issues leaves you unable to iterate the problem.
I had found out about this website dedicated to stealing my, and every other Patreon creators, content back in January, but I felt like I was at a loss. I was afraid to complain to loudly because putting more eyes on something you haven't figured out how to handle can caus...

In an effort to combat the massive theft of my work, and I will need to go through and individually kill the link to every dropbox gallery I have posted. I don't want to lose all of the blogs I have posted. The 6 years I have been using Patreon, and the thoughts I have had are very important to me, and I just can't justify losing them because of what is happening.
I don't know that relinking dropboxes will help long term, so I may need to create a master archive of my posts...

I woke up three months ago to find out that every post I had ever made to Patreon had been stolen and reshared to a page that is built entirely for the theft of copyrighted material.
To say I am demoralized would be a massive understatement. I have relied on Patreon to make the money that allows me to create for years, and with this theft I am really struggling. Nearly as soon as I share my work on Patreon it is reposted to this site. The site ignores all DMCA notices. ...

With my schedule falling apart, and no shoots in the immediate future I thought it would be a good time to go back and revisit last years trip to Iceland. I have been so busy I knew I had overlooked, or not even looked at a few thousand images from this trip. I spend so much time focused on my students, and just trying to stay well rested that these workshops tend to go by the wayside when I get home.
But I just love that this is something I have been able to do to truly fo...

I find myself losing track of the days...more than usual. I see the passing of time in the plants outside my door. The sun has returned to us and with it plants have come to life...blooming. Nicole and I are still trying to shoot on the days we have the motivation. It comes in fleeting moments, and then disappears at least for me.
The other day we walked out to the base of our camelia, and shot among the fallen flowers. One day soon the forest floor will b...

Here to let you all know we are safe at home, and have been quarantined for 13 days here in Portland. Updates will be continuing as often as I can, and I will be really pushing to create more educational content during this time where I can not shoot.
I hope you all are staying safe as well.

Summer's end with Amy Wilder in the forest was an incredible shoot. I've been trying to use our ferns a lot lately. They create such interesting rolling lines and textures to compose with, it can be chaos or perfect, and I live for the moments that it all comes together perfectly.

I love the tiny ways the forest changes through out the year. When the Touch Me Nots bloomed and the forest was dotted with incredible tiny orange flowers I was blown away by the tiny bursts of color against the green that Jay Marie and I were able to capture.
Every day I find a new piece of magic in the woods. With collaborators that are just beyond what I could imagine or create on my own.

February is here, and I've had a hard time keeping up. I managed to catch both flues going around the end of January and was rewarded with a rough two weeks of doing nothing. Resting and recuperating is just the worst, but here we are.
I'm excited to finally be back in front of the computer and editing though. This shoot with Willow was so incredible, and I am so thankful that she was kind enough to come over and create these images towards the very end of her ...

The days have been short, finally the light is starting to last longer, but some days I have found myself racing the setting sun. Pushing the ISO high and then higher still as the last of the day falls to night. Kayla dancing in the canary grass as all the tones of a north west winter unfold in front of us. We are here in the cold creating still.

Juno was the first guest we invited to our home when it was brand new to us, and the first real shoot I had here. You'd think Nicole and I would have reserved that sort of thing for each other in a romantic gesture, but moving is stressful, and we are not great with doing the thing that makes the better story all the time.
But honestly that first with Juno was something special all of its own, and after she left I felt like she was somebody I was going to hopefully work with ofte...

Modelgedon 2.0 was such a an amazing time, and spending the afternoon down in the creek shooting with Jay and Dahlia was truly incredible. If you know me at all you know I have a love of slips and vintage dresses, so every opportunity to shoot some beautiful clothing is one I will love.
I feel like the results of this shoot just came out perfect. I hope you enjoy them as well.

Spring flowers are like fire works. Booms of color appear and disappear almost as quickly and I am left running around the yard hoping that one of these explosions happens on the day of a shoot, and that the light is kind to me.

There is a small park across the creak from our home, that nobody ever uses except for one day a year where the local elementary school comes to collect trash that has blown in. It was on this day that I was photographing Say Hello Jess when I heard a small child's voice come out of the woods and the words they spoke rocked me to my core.
"I see an old man"
Jess still clothed and in the depth of the plants along the edge of the field was not spotted, I on the other hand, i...
