God Slayers - Page 83

Memory problems are one of Riley's worst symptoms... but... when I first wrote the script for Chapter 5, I realized that making it a focus of any encounter with her quickly became redundant and frustrating, both to write and to read.  Granted, I imagine having any such mental illness or knowing a loved one who has it is far more stressful than simply reading or writing about it, but I digress.

Weekly Update 36

I think I missed another one of these last week... but that was because of vacation.  I didn't have much that was interesting to share anyway.  Taking it easy, hanging with the family.  Twas a proper vacation!

Riley Hairvolution

This is kind of fascinating to me, so I thought I'd share it.

Riley's been around for awhile. She appears near the beginning of my first ever God Slayers sketchbook, but she was without her little hair... thing, which, for me at least, has become a rather iconic part of her appearance.

Looking back through my old sketchbooks, I was really curious how it came to be... and the journey of just how her crazy hairdo changed through the years is long and strange. Rather than take crap...

Back from vacation! So have some of this!

Max isn't perfectly insulated from the more brutal side of Kuserra life, and I got to wondering if there were any situations where Max might be angry about something. Then I drew this.

Weekly Update - 35

Got a trip planned this week!  Heading down to see the family for Halloween.  Should be a fun break from all this hiding-in-the-house avoiding-all-contact-with-people year.

What that means for the comic is we will have a post going up this week, than probably not one next week.  I'll instead probably be watching the nephew do all the crazy Halloween-related child things I wish I could still do.

Bad Morning

Imagine having a nightmare, waking up, and finding all your nightmares have come with you into the waking world.
You know they aren't real, because they can't be, and yet there they are, as real to your senses as reality itself.

How can you know what's real when you cannot trust your own mind?

I imagine it must be pretty terrifying to not be in complete control of your own mind.  To find yourself stuck in a state where you want to say something, and cannot.  Even moreso, to be aware of that disconnect, and powerless to do anything about it until it passes.

This is part of the reason I love this character so much.  People easily dismiss her as "just crazy" because of her behavior, but there's so much complexity underneath it all.

Been thinking a lot about it lately, but creating is kind of a lonely process.  I spend a great deal of my time alone, thinking up things that don't exist, and trying to make them into something that does exist.  Then I put it on the internet, where people that do exist look at it briefly and then move on.

Weekly Update 33

Well, I thought I was further along on Page 80 than I really am, so gonna be crunching a little bit today and tomorrow.  We've also started working on the early stages of the main site's lore page, which I hope to have up this week.  I've been starting to feel like I'm doing a pretty poor job of giving my readers a solid sense of setting through the art alone, and there's a lot of things I can share in a few quick paragraphs that are probably interesting to know, but aren't critical...

Riley's a genius, turns out.

Apparently I'm really having trouble deciding on the colors for this scene.  Turns out an orange cat wearing orange on an orange and grey background doesn't stand out as much as I'd like.  Normally I'm not too worried about colors... but this... I dunno.  Maybe it's just something I'm becoming more aware of as I improve!

Weekly Update 32

I've gone ahead and sketched out the comics through page 82.  Which one of those am I teasing today?  I guess you'll have to wait and find out!

Not a lot else to say, really... drawing is going well...  Kinda, feels weird to be proud of what I'm doing.  It's not perfect, it's not even really great, but the quality of my art has come very far, even in the past couple of months.  Mistakes I've made in how I construct expressions and poses are a lot clearer to me n...

Weekly Update 31

It's my mom's birthday today!  Happy birthday, mom!

It's actually impressive I was able to remember, because usually I don't.... not out of disrespect, just because dates, for whatever reason, never seem to stick in my brain.  Something about numbers, probably.  I always seem to struggle with numbers.  This year, however, I'm making it a point to have my phone spam me with notifications about important dates.

 It sure was a struggle to get the ol' pen moving today. Even moreso to create something I felt was worth sharing. But here you go. Inspired by a suggestion from Tycloud on Twitter, Max teaches the twins how to dance!

Today's preview is progress of the sketch I shared last week.  Does anyone get the reference she's making?  There's a clue reflecting in her eyes.

Chasing Riley

 I don't have a lot of time. My friends are coming to kidnap me and take me to see this "outside" I keep hearing about. Something about trees... and... sky. It sounds pretty scary.

So here's a sketch from an upcoming Chapter 5 page. I was just... really, really pleased with how this one is turning out.

I thought about putting up a poll or something... but I dunno, probably better to just ask: Which of my characters do YOU want to see more sketches of? Please let me know! ...

The resizing algs failed me on this one.  Had to resort to using some superior software.  But I might just do that from now on anyway if it more consistently results in cleaner looking scaled down pages.
