greetings, gamers! as we bring the decade to a close, i figured i'd share something only seen by like 3 pairs of eyes -- an unfinished (and likely never-to-be-finished) expansion comic from earlier this year. got interrupted about halfway through doing that doujin, which thoroughly drained all of my comic-making juices.

in my attempts to create clothes that mapped to an inflated body, i accidentally created clothes that... tear themselves off an inflated body! still a bit messy, and requires much more love to look convincing...

animation & material test

an experiment in animating surface materials using a random noise generator to "map" blueberried regions onto the normal skin texture.

kinda works, but the animation timing is waaaay off -- the beginning is quick and the ending is slow, when it should be vice-versa.

some notes:

-know when to soften/erase lines, even before it's time to paint on top of them. illustration is all about eliminating unnecessary detail to let the necessary stuff tell its story.

-i started with a circular gradient to get my "light falloff", since light pointed at a sphere falls off equally in all directions. obviously this isn't enough -- saryn has plenty of plates & bumps that nee...

a little process gif of an old piece showing my usual approach! some notes:

-establishing the shadows is what makes or breaks a piece. i won't claim to be a master, but making sure your light & shadow masses obey the laws of perspective (or are at least close enough to fool the viewer) is crucial.

-i make my lineart on the same layer as my undersketch, and just erase the lines i don't need. lol

-after i establish flats & shadows *under* the lineart, i switch to paint...

Continued 3D progress

between a reformatted hard drive, a can of compressed air, a new version of blender, and a massive external fan strapped to the bottom, i managed to get my laptop back to a state where i could mess around with 3D again (in brief bursts).

3D experiment: inflatable rigged model (animation)

hey folks! as promised, here's a little peek behind-the-scenes for patrons -- an experimental "inflating" animation, and the technique that went into it.

i started with the fully-inflated sculpt, with wayyy too many polygons. I then shrunkwrapped it down to the proportions of a normal human torso (referenced), taking care to smooth out the geometry and making sure things mapped appropriately (arm to arm, boob to boob, etc).
