Unearthed from the hellyear of 1998 to present to the hellyear of 2024, we have the ill-reputed Virgin Fleet. Bafflingly born from the minds of two of the hottest creators of the 90s, Virgin Fleet is boring, ill-conceived, and above all else, creepy as all get out! Tune in to find out what exactly I mean!

Virgin Fleet – November 16th
I feel like I’ve been a little too accommodating to some of the anime I’ve been watching lately. Therefore, in the interest of balancing things out, let’s talk about some crap! We travel back to 1998 (The Worst Year in Anime) and unearth the rightfully forgotten alt-history OVA Virgin Fleet. You would think that a three-episode OVA that comes from the minds behind Sakura Wars and Giant Robo would ...

The 80s saw numerous examples of anime creators cribbing from their favorite Hollywood movies, notably Ridley Scott's Alien. But out of all of them, it is 1987's Lily C.A.T. that stand triumphant as the most awesomely stylish ripoff.

Gorey special effects and other production materials have become intertwined with horror movies since time immemorial and people have given praise to their craft. So, it should make sense that we must also praise well-animated blood and guts in animation. And lucky for 1995's Bio Hunter, good-looking blood is all it has going for it.

The early 00s saw the emergence of the light novel adaptation. And one of the early success stories was an episodic, philosophical romp done by the Serial Experiments Lain director. This is Kino's Journey, one of my all time favorite animes.

Back from my little vacay. Now it is time to get back to work. How about we start things off with our annual Slayers video. The final entry of Slayers movie quadrilogy, we'll see how it tries to keep things fresh as the franchise's heyday begins to draw to a close.

stretches Welp, summer vacation time is over! Let’s get back in the swing of things by posting what we having coming up until the end of October.
But before I do, I would like to give you all some detail on the final episode of the Merrie History of Looney Tunes. I was actually able to make some progress on writing it while I was gone. But since it’s turned out a lot BIGGER than I had initially planned (I was already expected...

Before I head off on vacation, let's back in the glory of forgotten age. An age called the mid-90s where Masami Obari had unprecedented sway in both the games and anime industry. Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer is the fruit of that bygone age.

Yo!
You heard the title correctly. KYOTO VIDEO the series is taking a brief hiatus for the rest of the month of August! Once I release the long-awaited Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer video in the next few days, I’m taking a much-needed summer vacation from this show!
I have several reasons for doing so. One is just the risk of burn out. While that Christmas break did help at the end of last year, those burn out feelings really did come back. Doing near ...

Since the Olympics are around the corner, let's take a look back at a sports anime that I can tangentially relate it to. One with lots of wack-a-doo 90s anime hair and steamy yuri subtext.

Boy's love widespread popularity in the States is more recent than you think. For this reason, one company decided to try to turn a boy's love anime straight in order to sell more units. Not helped by the anime itself being kinda terrible on its own.

In honor of Pride Month, we're doing a first KYOTO VIDEO! We're doing a video on a boy's love anime finally! One of the first boy's love titles to ever come to America as a matter of fact, a buddy cop narrative where the cops are more than just buddies if you catch my drift.

Ichirō Itano is a a true talent in his field of animation. But his directorial work has always been divisive due to it proclivity towards hardcore violence, even by 80s OVA standards. Today, we look at one of his earlier works done by his own studio and see if there's something there beneath the blood and guts.

What happens when two musicians make an independent anime film about cute, rebellious kitty cat in space? You get 2002's Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space, a truly punk rock avant-garde film that sets out to cute up the counterculture!

Apologies for the VERY late posting of the schedule. Here’s what is coming up for the next series of KYOTO VIDEO
May 19th: Tamala2010: A Punk Cat in Space
This is an odd pick of the litter. See how a pseudo-anonymous musical duo crafted weird-as-all-get-out movie about Tamala, a punk cat in space, and how she is both an avant-garde countercultural icon that is also the crassest commercial icon who’s impact spans across time and space. Hope you bro...

Today, we go back to the first true decade of anime to look at a film that helped make the artform truly unique. In a class struggle of Walt Disney-wannabes, union politics and one passionately Marxist director who couldn't draw, one of anime's first critically important films is born.

For my 6th anniversary, I wanted to take a look back at an anime that's more of a historical document than an actual anime. Through a combination self-effacing humor and true love for the medium, a Gainax co-founder made Otaku no Video as a way to poke fun, but also de-mystify the subculture he was a part of. But how does it fare in today's light where otakudom feels more mainstream than ever?

Shoujo horror was big in the 80s and early 90s, but that was not reflective by the OVA market. Especially not indicative by a past-its-prime movie studio choosing to do a cheap-o adaptation of one the big mangas released in that period. This is 1991's Dark Cat, one of the worst horror animes ever.
