Video preview: How I study using Obsidian

I am a huge fan of online courses, and this last year is proof of that. I've been wanting to do this video for a while, so I'm happy I got to talk about how I like to learn, some of what I've learned this year, and how I take notes on it all in Obsidian.

You may notice that this video was sponsored by Brilliant. This is my FIRST EVER sponsorship, so I'm nervous about it! I would love some feedback from you lovely Patreons about how you felt about this type of sponsorship. I personally l...

- Callouts*
- Leaflet
- Kanban
- Tracker
- Advanced Slides
- Graph view*
- Mind Map
- ExcaliBrain
- Popout window*

*These are not technically plugins, but...

Live this Saturday: Visual PKM with Zsolt Viczián

This Saturday, I'm interviewing Zsolt Viczián, developer of the Obsidian Excalidraw and Excalibrain plugins and strong proponent for creating a visual Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system. I've already made a video on how to use Excalidraw, but I plan to ask him to show off how HE uses it, and also tell us about his latest plugin, Excalibrain....

Video preview: How I learn in Obsidian

Hey folks, this week's video is a little later than usual, but here it is! It's an example of how I process my notes, specifically to learn technical concepts, including some visual aggregation at the end. Basically my workflow involves:
- Sending highlights to Obsidian via the Readwise Official plugin
- Processing highlights and adding ideas to existing notes or creating new ones
- Creating visual summaries using Excalidraw
- Visualising the context for my notes with Excalibrain<...

Readwise-Obsidian export settings

Hi all! You might have already seen my video on how I use Readwise with Obsidian, but in that video, I only briefly covered my export settings. I've gotten a few messages asking for them, so I thought I would share them here!

(If you would like to use Readwise, use this link to get double the usual trial - this is an affiliate link, ...

Video sneak peek: Using the Obsidian Quick Add Plugin

Hey everyone! Another week, another video. :) This week's video is about using Obsidian QuickAdd, a cool plugin for automating parts of your note-taking workflows.

I go through how to create everything from notes according to templates to multi-step macros-- but as patreons, you already have access to these examples! You can download the sample vault to find everything except the last exam...

Video preview: D&D prep with Obsidian

Hey folks, in this week's video, watch me do session prep in Obsidian for my D&D game! This is a bit of a longer one, as I go through the exact process of what I do to review the previous game's notes, process them, and then get ready for the next session.

I originally intended to record the entire process, but I stopped short of prepping the actual encounter as it took longer than I thought to record everything! However, the video is still enough to get the idea of how I plan sessi...

In the vault: Quick Add commands

Hi everyone! Many of you seem to be enjoying the vault, so I've made a few changes recently that I hope you'll like too.

- New workflows! I'm working on a video about Quick Add. It won't come out for a few weeks yet, but I've already added the Quick Add commands to the vault, specifically for two new workflows: Creating agendas for meetings and Keeping a running log in Daily Note...

Last-minute Video preview: Introducing Popout Windows for Obsidian

Earlier this week, I sent out a preview for a video on Why I've lived in 5 countries , with the intention of posting it this Friday. However, since then, a new version of Obsidian Desktop was announced, v0.15.6, and with it comes a feature I've been using heavily for the last two weeks: popout windows.

I was excited enoug...

What would you like to see in Patreon?

Hi lovely patrons! I'm grateful for your support and am flabbergasted that others exist who like note-taking as much as me!

I'm new to this Patreon thing, so I'd appreciate your help in figuring out what you'd like MOST as a Patreon-only benefit. Please only choose one, even if you like more than one! That'll help me see what to prioritize.

Or just leave me a comment if what you want isn't in the list!

Video preview: Why I've lived in 5 countries

Now for something a bit different! This week's video is going to be about why and how I came to live in 5 different countries, and how you can do it too. I'm focusing on the financial aspects of moving this time. With recent news from all over the world, it's not a stretch to imagine that we might not be 100% in agreement with what our political representatives decide for us. Having roots (or flags) in other countries means having options when things don't go the way you want.

Enjoy! (T...

I'll also be making a public YouTube video of these questions and answers at the end of the month, especially for those that would be better explained with a screenshare.

Bring on the questions! :)

Video Preview: Regular reviews in Obsidian with Periodic Notes

This week's video is a deep dive into the Obsidian Periodic Notes plugin, including some beta features of the plugin that add even more functionality that I didn't know I needed! Periodic Notes has completely superceded Daily Notes for me, and it's a great way to do personal retrospectives or remind yourself of tasks that always need to be done daily, weekly, quarterly, or yearly.

Enjoy!

Video preview: How to use maps in Obsidian // Leaflet and Kanban

Here's a sneak preview of this week's video. In the last two weeks, I moved to another country! I've actually been planning this move for months, and used Obsidian quite a bit in the process. So I thought I'd share how I did that. Enjoy!

Sorry for the less than stellar audio... empty apartments tend to have a lot of echo. ;)

Patron-only Q&A

Hey everyone! I'd like to try something different for June and try to tackle some Q&As from the community. This could quickly get out of hand if I opened it up to everyone, so I want to make it patrons-only.

What questions do you have about PKM, Obsidian, tech, or min/maxing in general that you'd like me to answer?

From now until the end of June, please drop your questions in this thread (or DM me on Patreon if you'd prefer) and I'll make sure you get an answer. :)

Video preview: Presentations as Code // How to use the Obsidian Advanced Slides plugin

Hey everyone! This week's video is a bit of a deep dive into a plugin I mentioned during my talk last week at the Linking Your Thinking conference. In that talk, I briefly mentioned that I'd made the presentation within Obsidian. I got a bunch of questions about it afterwards, so I thought I'd make a full video on how to create simple but beautiful presentations in Obsidian using the plugin Advanced Slides. View Post

ICYMI: Recording of my talk at LYTCon

Hey min/maxers! Last week, I was invited to speak at the first annual Linking Your Thinking conference, which was all about different ways and use cases for taking notes. My presentation was entitled "Use it or lose it: what to do with all those notes" and I talked about how I use my notes to actually create stuff, whether it's presentations, code, blog posts, or videos. It's a bit of a "behind the scenes" of my cont...

Video preview: How real people process notes

Hey everyone! This week's video is a bit of a critique on most productivity methods, particularly ones that do not address just how difficult it is for real people with real lives to keep up. Is it just me?

Note: If you try to open the link and are shown a "Private video" message, that's probably because it's about to be published shortly for the wider public.

I'm sharing this video early with you wonderful people who are here. Thank you so much for joining my Patreon-- I'm new to...
