Patrons Ask GN 35: ITX Case Reviews? RTX 2060 with Minecraft? Morrowind?

Hey everyone,

Here's part two of our Patrons Ask GN episodes that we filmed recently. As for other content, we're finalizing some additional work on the Ryzen 3 CPUs and preparing for Intel 10th Gen reviews. It'll be a little while for that, but the work is starting this week. We're also working on prepping for more livestreams!

Post your questions in the Discord for more.

Behind-the-Scenes Lab Update: Advanced Cooler Testing, TIM Test, & Magnets

Hey everyone,

Just a quick behind-the-scenes video for our Patreon backers! We might eventually set this public, not sure, but for now, it's exclusive to you all. We've added a lot of magnets to the testing rooms, but more importantly, we've also been doing a lot of testing. Our Intel dummy heater (9900K heat density) is up-and-running and can be deployed for accurate TIM testing, with a +/- 0.2C run-to-run variance so far. We've also got the EK AIO on the bench for review, alongside so...

Patrons Ask GN 34: Ice Giant Thermosiphon? Standardized Fans for Cooler Reviews?

Hey everyone,

We're back with another Patrons Ask GN video. We filmed two back-to-back, and the second will go live later in the week. Great questions in the Patreon Discord this week -- please submit more as you come up with them!

00:54 – Any interest in the Ice Giant cooler?

Cmoney: “Any interest in the Ice Giant CPU Cooler? I am sure @Steve Burke would have words for them.”

Patrons Ask GN 33: How Much Content in Advance? How Many Folding Rigs?

Hey everyone,

Thanks for checking back in and for submitting more Patreon Ask GN questions. For this series, I really like answering ones that are more about how things operate behind-the-scenes or "inside baseball," as Linus likes to phrase it. It's the type of stuff that we don't normally talk about in the main episodes. Timestamps are below for the questions this week. Awards Shipped & Behind-the-Scenes Video: What We Bought in Taiwan

Hey everyone,

First, quick note: We just shipped Patreon award cubes, so you'll get emails notifying you of the shipment in the next day or so.

It's been a hard few weeks for the team with the travel coinciding with international events. I typically give the team about 2 weeks off after traveling to Asia (since it's non-stop work while there), and that's partly because we stockpile content that I can keep publishing without any assistance for a few weeks. It's a good opportunity f...

Patrons Ask GN 32: Embargoed Products in Background?

We're in Taiwan right now, so please excuse the brevity on this accompanying message. This video was shot a little while ago, so there's one update: The WS Threadripper question isn't really valid anymore, because AMD said it believed AT's testing to be erroneous. As for the rest, enjoy! If you're new here, you can connect Discord to Patreon by google searching  "connect discord to Patreon," then you can join our server and post questions!

Thanks!

Patreon BTS: Atari VCS Refurb Project & Prebuilt Review Incoming

I worked with Keegan and Andrew to put together a couple of behind-the-scenes videos this week, plus a Patrons Ask GN. This gives you a bit of a teaser on some upcoming content, like our impending review of the Comino Otto that Linus recently reviewed and our tear-down of the Atari VCS (but not that one). Really happy to be able to put more of these out lately. Our Patrons Ask GN should be going up early next week for Patreon backers as well!

Test Room Behind-the-Scenes: New CPU Methods & More

I have a behind-the-scenes Patreon video coming up, but asked Patrick to fill the gaps with a walkthrough of our testing room and what's going on currently. The testing room is my favorite part of the office to show off just because of how much is always going on in there. In this one, you get a look at new CPU testing methodology, 3990X testing and challenges (or lack thereof), and an embargoed, blurred-out product.

Behind the Scenes: 3175X Build

We typically try to keep our CPU and GPU test parts out of workstation builds, mostly because the unavailability created by their inclusion isn't worth the (1) downtime in a production machine when a part is pulled, and (2) downtime in a test machine. The 3175X is unique in that way, though: Not many people are buying it at this point and we also just recently posted a revisit of the part, so we won't need to revisit it again for at least a year or two. Rather than let the part sit on the she...

Shipping Patreon GN Cubes & Updates on GN's Staff

Hey everyone,

We've been really drowning lately in work. I have been trying to figure out how to scale the business in a way that stays true to what we do, but just improves it. It's not easy. Before getting into that discussion, a note: I just sent over all the Patreon $20 tier orders (dating back a few months) to our merch team. They will ship your stuff on Monday and Tuesday this week. Thanks for your patience, and my apologies on the delay.

That starts my first topic, though: ...

BTS: GN+L1T Server Build Follow-Up

Hey everyone,

Our pipeline got slammed with all the Red Dead 2 stuff, so we pushed back a lot of our content we shot with Wendell. Part 2 of the server build has been done, just waiting for a time when we have a gap in the production schedule to publish. In the meantime, here's a behind-the-scenes look at what we have set up!

Bonus Footage: Wendell Explaining RAID, ZFS, & Unraid

Hi everyone,

This is a deleted scene from Wendell's trip to build the server/NAS. We had many hours of footage for part 1, but wanted to cut down closer to 30 minutes. We ended up around 35 minutes for the final cut, and this was one of the more interesting pieces that, although we wanted to leave it in, pushed the video duration too long.

In this clip, Wendell teaches me about how Unraid validates drives against each other, and how standard "RAID" terminology applies or doesn't a...

Why don't you just publish a few key points in video, then reference to a page on your website with everything? This way we'll always have all data available, AND readable charts on video. The page could also have filters in order for the user to easy remove SKUs that are not interesting for him.”

A Photo of Where GN Started

I thought I'd share this so people could appreciate where we are now with some more perspective. I took this photo in 2013. GamersNexus officially started c. 2007 or 2008, depending on how you count it, but 2012-2013 was when I started changing course to focus more on computer hardware and less on purely gaming. Everything was started in my bedroom. You might notice there's no bed in there -- that's because, by this point, GN had gotten enough initial success that I had moved the bed into the...

Patreon Special: Give Us A Challenge!

Hey all,

Finally found some time to dedicate to a Patreon idea. First off, we're filming a Patrons Ask GN episode tonight, so that'll be edited and up in the next week or so. Secondly, and more importantly, I had an idea.

I'd like to collect some 'challenge' ideas from Patreon backers for a content piece we could produce for the main channel. Let's assume the challenge involves me and Patrick, so it's 1v1. Now we just need to decide what it is.

Examples might be to build the...

BTS: GN Workstation Update!

Hey Everyone,

It's been a while since we showed some proper behind-the-scenes in the editing room. We actually filmed this in late May, but we had to hold it back because the GN toolkit appears in it and we didn't want to leak our own product! Anyway, it's just an update on what we're using in our machines. Patrick had pointed out that people are always curious what we use at work, given that we're fortunate enough to be surrounded by a lot of cool hardware, and so we thought you all mi...

Patreon exclusive! This was not intended to be made into a video. While in KINGPIN's OC lab in Taiwan, he showed us a cool "lazy man's LN2 setup" that he'd invented when his knee was injured. Vince doesn't have a mic in this (as it was unplanned), but we boosted the camera audio a bit and threw it together for our Patreon backers. Totally unplanned, but really cool setup for LN2 dispensing!

Some thoughts on Windows 1903 + AMD's chipset drivers

Hi all,

We've been doing a lot of CPU benchmarking over the past two months. Unfortunately, we keep throwing away data because updates come out that seem important to test. We always try to pre-test as much as we can before new CPUs show up, but sometimes, that does mean we have to do the work twice if important updates launch.

We recently retested Windows 1903 without the new chipset driver, finding that all changes in performance were within margin of error and usual test varian...

Our distributor is a close friend of mine. He has been handling the shipping of our products for a while now, and has grown to a point where he's able to finally move out of his home, just like we did, and into a proper warehouse. We'll be helping him move into the space shortly and are excited for the growth of his business alongside ours. We might make videos on this move for the main channel, but aren't sure yet.

Behind-the-Scenes: Dual-Socket Server Challenges

Patrick's on-and-off project for a few months has been a dual-socket X79 build. Because we decided to use the highest-end of the X79 Xeon CPUs, we faced a ton of issues with motherboard compatibility. We've had to order different memory kits, ask Intel to dig for X79 CPUs in its drawers, and ask EVGA to go find old RMA dual X79 motherboards. The challenge has been fun, but we're finally nearing a point where we can build this damn thing!
