Fun with UPS Batteries in Power Outage

This was kind of fun.

We have a behind-the-scenes video coming out soon for $5 backers, but I think we will probably publicly post that one after a week or two (on the side channel). It was just sort of fun, hence wanting to share early.

There was a major storm here today that knocked-out our power and showed no signs of early recovery. We have the Lian Li O11 Dynamic review going up tomorrow, but had to film aroll, broll, and edit it today. All of those things require power.

GN BTS #6: Set Room Overhaul

Hi all,

First off, video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMjrL4J4tac

We're looking into completely overhauling the set room. We don't have much space in this room, and our overhaul will somewhat eat into the space we do have; however, we're planning on eliminating a few of the tripods in the room, which will give us more mobility when navigating the set.

Growing pains of business, really -- we...

So much testing: What We're Working On

Hi all,

Part of supporting us on Patreon means you get occasional behind-the-scenes articles or videos. This will be a short article.

This past week, I've relied pretty heavily on Patrick for primary content production. Patrick has an Elgato 4K60 review lined-up, we've also got a HAF X revisit going up tonight (once uploading/processing is done), and we have a highly detailed FFXV PC vs. Console piece that we're finalizing. All very exciting things.

For my part, I've finalized a Ra...

Patrons Ask GN 4: Driver Benchmarks, Thoughts Re: Cryptos, First PC

Hi all!

Here's the video link, first off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmwkGEUzB9Y

This is our fourth Patrons Ask GN video. We are moving the videos over to the GNSteve side channel -- mostly out of paranoia that YT might penalize the main channel for uploading content with abnormally low view count.

This one talks about general thoughts toward cryptos, driver impact on performance, RAM voltages ...

All Patreon tiers will be able to see our new "Patrons Ask GN" series. This series will be filmed almost at a 1:1 ratio with our public Ask GN series. There are only a few instances where we'd skip it -- like if we're traveling, for instance; otherwise, you can expect one of these episodes for each Ask GN. These will be viewable only to Patreon backers, but wil...

Patrons Only: Ask GN After Hours!

Hey, Patreon backers!

I am excited to update you on our continued efforts to improve the value for our Patreon supporters. We looked around at most of the Patreon creators in our space, and ultimately realized that we'd like to offer more intrinsic value for supporting. As part of this, and because of your financial support, we are now adding a special "Ask GN: After Hours" segment. We will film one of these after each Ask GN. It will be a roll-over of extra questions (things that didn't make ...

Cool stuff we're working on - February, 2018

We got knocked off-schedule with CES this year, but the show was a resounding success for our group. We're already in planning stages for Computex, and will be in attendance as we have been for the past two years.

Anyway, right now is largely the season when we plan travel for the first half of the year. Aside from that, there's the usual tax work, convention travel, and overhaul of methodology. It's about the longest busy period of the year for us, despite no major launches.

The lack of...

GN BTS #4: Piecemeal Render Rig (Multi-GPU) for Blender

Hey everyone!

For our $5 and up backers -- though this video will later push public to the main channel -- we wanted to share a behind-the-scenes update to the render machine we built for Andrew. This updates a PC build we posted not long ago, which used piecemeal componentry to assemble our main video editor a high-end production PC. The quick video shows some benchmark charts and performance metrics, but also just talks about the  process in general.

What's Coming Up: RAM Investigation, Xbox vs. PC

Hi backers,

Those of you in the Discord already have an idea of what's coming up, but in case you missed it, here's a recap of this week's major content pieces:

- We just finished working on a RAM pricing research report that dives into five years of data to look at cyclic trends in memory price, along with major factors contributing to memory price increases of late. This will help establish a baseline of understanding for why RAM has shot up in price recently, and when/if we can expect...

GN Behind-the-Scenes #3! Things cut in half at CES

Hi all!

This BTS #3 video is one of the ones that'll go public on the GNSteve channel eventually, but you're getting way earlier access to it. The video shows some behind-the-scenes stuff that we saw at CES 2018 -- things that won't make it into any/many of our videos, as it's outside of our coverage scope, but still really cool technology. We've got some robots, automation, self-driving cars, audio gear, and lots of things cut in half, which is always educational.

CES is Crazy

As always, every year for at least five years, we're at CES for the new product launches. We anticipate more still at Computex -- companies like Noctua only attend Computex -- but there's a decent amount to see at this year's US-based trade show.

We've seen your tweets and posts about the various products you'd like us to look at. One that we haven't yet gotten to is the Cooler Master H500P reduxes -- something we're hoping to see. Interestingly, CM actually did not tell us about them, so we'l...

GN BTS #2: Shunt Shorting, TV Repair, Xmas Gifts

Hi all!

This is our first GN Behind-the-Scenes episode that is going out exclusively to $5 backers. We may end up pushing it public at a later date, but not anytime immediately.

I think I've started to find a format that works well for these. The current plan, if there is one, is to film mini-projects/vlogs while working. This will allow me to piece together longer vlogs, but without doing it all at once. My plan is to film parts of projects during the week, then compile it all. View Post

New for $5 Backers: Behind-the-Scenes Videos

Hi all,

We are sharing this first behind-the-scenes video to all Patreon supporters. We have recently received a lot of interest in behind-the-scenes videos. I'm excited to take this task and start giving a better inside look at GN, and I feel like the Patreon backers deserve it -- especially now that you've helped us grow so much. How Patreon's Changes Hurt Creators (& You)

Patreon is a significant leg of support for our business. Our viewers, readers, fans, and supporters know that we’re not afraid to challenge product manufacturers on poor designs, and that means sometimes leaning on generous viewer contributions to fund our efforts. This means of support critically enables us to remain headstrong in our journalistic efforts, and avoid invasive advertisements and fully sponsored content.

We also still believe that, even with the new changes, Patreon is the be...

Coming up: Noctua 200mm Fans

Hey all,

We're working on reviewing the Noctua 200mm fans! Separately, we just got a wind tunnel in and working, and should soon be able to do CFM calculations on fans. This will help us in our upcoming fan reviews. The 200mm units, unfortunately, won't fit on the wind tunnel, but we are still doing thermal + LPM (Linear feet per minute) tests on the Noctua 200s, primarily benchmarking them against the Cooler Master 200mm fans from the H500P. Rather than test with an open bench of some sort, w...

Brewing Some Competition

Hi, all!

We have been working hard at some new benchmarking tools. Over the past few months, we've developed another data type for graphing that will accompany (or partly replace) 1%/0.1% low metrics, which should be interesting to eventually unveil -- that unveil will likely be in December. We can't talk about much yet, but the new approach should help resolve some long-standing desires to get even more granular data for GPU/CPU benchmarks. As more YouTubers have adopted our method of 1%/0.1%...

What Do You Want More Coverage Of in September?

We have PAX this weekend. After we return from PAX, what kind of coverage would you like to see more of?

Rearchitecting Testing for 2H17

Hi all,

Wanted to run a Patreon-only update!

We tend to build a new test plan once per year for each set of devices. The test plan covers data organization (a big, unseen element of what goes on behind the scenes), custom software development, test automation where possible, and determining which software is used for which products.

We have been on our current CPU testing suite for nearly a year now, so it's getting to about the point where we want to update. An update will allow u...

Vega Undervoltage by Patreon Request

We just posted our Vega: FE undervoltage testing, which was a request in our Patreon Discord chat (thanks to Streetguru and others present for bouncing around ideas on that one).

The results are interesting: We were able to improve performance something like ~7-10% in various applications when increasing power target by +50% and reducing voltage by 110mv, netting a +15W power draw and +7-10% performance uplift -- not a bad trade!

Mostly, it was just a fun test to do and somewhat eye-open...
