I'm painting a wall. No audio; put on Praga Khan's Mutant Funk if you want to get in the mood.

BTS: Studio update #2 (Cleaner / Brighter)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72QrA3Dvjhk

Strides made in the categories of lighting and organization; also, we nearly had an entire rack of computers collapse; also, we found mysterious imported print goods in the rafters; also, I give a short treatise on hopefully-defunct business internet; also, Gibbs; things continue apace.

One thing I forgot to mention: Comcast Business (only damn thing I co...

BTS: Studio Update #1 (Things Continue Apace)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQGk7m6o2Fw

This video contains the first actual camera/mic test in the new space, so check it out!

Things are moving, literally (I've Moved A Lot Of Stuff) but, also, temporary acoustic treatment is now sustained acoustic treatment, more foam is enwalled (it's pretty ugly, but foam should follow function), I've hung a paper towel dispenser, and I've...

BTS: Audio treatment

Hey, if these emails are irritating: I've contacted Patreon support to find out if it's possible to create an opt-in feature. I'm thinking if I make a second five-dollar tier, it should be possible for anyone who can currently see this to opt in or out of just the behind-the-scenes posts. I won't be surprised if they don't understand what I'm trying to do, so if anyone else has tried this before, let me know if it works.

BTS: New Studio Tour #1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTJD3yi5C_8

Obviously right now I'm in the "move in as quickly as possible gogogogogogogogo" phase, partly because I need everything there to use any of it, and partly because I have a $300/mo. storage unit that has to be emptied out ASAP so I can cancel it before the billing cycle ends.

Fortunately that's moving at a very respectable clip, due to very...

BTS: Studio floorplan

Edit: For serious professionals (architect, interior designer, etc.) please find attached a version of this floorplan for use in Duke Nukem 3D.

This is a fairly accurate (~95%) floorplan of the new place. It's a little misleading because the ceilings are so tall; the last pic shrinks them to 8' to give you a better idea of the scale.

To put a point on it: There's an uninterrupted ~40' line from the entryway to the window. I don't think I've ever ...

An Exhaustive Explanation

So, you probably saw my last two posts. I was somewhat vague with them, because I haven't been able to sit down for five minutes in two days, until now. So here's what's up with me:

I just signed a lease on a piece of commercial property to use as a dedicated studio. I got it for an absolute steal and I'm not sure exactly why it was so cheap; I'm sure I'll find out, and won't love the answer, but what business has ever started in the penthouse they wanted to end up in? Most never even g...

Moving things in. Did my first test shot. Might do my first couple videos on this white wall since it's super clean as is - gonna be a couple weeks before I can get it painted.

Video: The Second Weirdest Optical Mouse I've Ever Seen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UXmDuiqMW0

Clint from LGR was kind enough to send me the cousin of the Q500 I reviewed recently! It's weird! Almost weirder than the Q500! But also not really that weird at all! Watch to find out what it's all about inside. Watch to find out what the MouseDesk is.

Teaser: Weird cameras

This is a pair of "analog HD" security cameras; literally 720p and 1080p (respectively) cameras that transmit their images down coax using analog signals. I don't fully understand the technology yet - there are several different standards and close to zero documentation, so I have a lot of grueling research to do, but at least one of them uses a spec that is, in no uncertain terms, "NTSC composite except we turned up the bandwidth."

Had no idea this technology existed until I stumbled o...

I've been sitting on this thing for four months and finally got my act together - here's *the weirdest* MiniDisc product Sony ever sold. It's way more than just a camcorder, and I wish other manufacturers had followed in its footsteps. Enjoy!

Here's the finished story on the EVM-8010. I mostly just tried to let my unfiltered exuberance come through on this one. Six year olds know helicopters are cool and I am not dumber than a six year old.

Edit: As usual, I had to workshop the name and thumbnail.

Bonus: Helicopter Videotape

Tyler Helicopter Footage - YouTube

There's a lot more info in the description of this video, but basically I bought a video monitor that was once used by a helicopter filming company, and it had a tape in the deck with 50 minutes of BTS aerial footage. I'm gonna see if I can do a video about this monitor and then I'll release this publicly, but I figured you all might want to see it early, and also maybe...

Mpegcam 2: The Reckoning

About ten minutes before I released the Mpegcam video, I learned that the follow-up model was sold under another name, and was able to get one on eBay. I'm going to do a video comparing them, but in short the second model is a significant improvement. here are still photos from each; you'll have no trouble telling which is the second edition.

Tapeless Video In '97: the MP-EG1 - YouTube

Hitachi produced a weird hard drive based camcorder in 1997! It wasn't amazing! I shot an enormous amount of demo footage!

I almost threw out this entire video to rerecord it but instead I deleted two minutes of footage and fixed all the problems it had and now I like it. Enjoy all my visual effects!

This is a video I keep using for testing HD media and I happened to create this four-up split view while working on my current project about WVHS tape. I never finished finessing it because I decided not to use it in the video, so I never fixed the timing. It starts out fairly in-sync, but as it continues the clips drift further and further out, and it gets pre...

Actually shooting a video with another person in it today, on location to boot. Never done that before, basically ever, I think. It's complicated. Anyway, that's a 1080i analog VHS deck and you're gonna love this video.
