Undying Blood - Chapter 05

Chapter 5

The rumors and stories that each of them hadn’t believed to be true were lying on the tables in the tent.

A wolf that looked like a man, with long legs, some weird leather armor, dark fur, and half a snout lay on one wooden platform.

Next to it was a cat-like person, slender but with muscles prominent under the tight skin.  Sharp claws remained on the one hand or paw it had, and there were darker spots all over its fur.

Three more tables ...

Chapter 4

"You're certain you want a helm?” the armorsmith, Tom, asked. “If you haven't trained with a metal one, it might be harder to fight with one."

"I'm certain," Francis stated as the armorsmith stared at him, arms crossed over his large chest. "Tell me I'm wrong.  Not having one would be foolish in a fight like what we are headed into."

"No... you're right... which is surprising, because I'm certain most of your companions spent all their money last night a...

Chapter 3

Glancing once more, Francis saw the pack of four was only about two hundred yards behind him by that point and they were giving everything they had.

Less than half a mile out was the stone wall and wooden gate to Macenburg, and there on a horse sat Phillip.

Behind him were guards and what looked like a crowd, all starting to make noise as Francis drew close.

His legs burned, his blisters had popped, and one boot was basically gone, the bottom had vanished a...

Chapter 2

The sound of the morning bell rang earlier than usual-- the sun barely showing above the mountains, far to the east. The light wasn't even streaming into their open window as each boy heard the call for training and pain about to start.

"It's earlier than usual," Michael said as he sat up. Their room was still mostly in shadows from the lack of light. "What gives?"

"He's an asshole,” Francis replied. “Does the man need a reason to make us hate him more?"

Blurb

The hardest part of being a noble's first son was… Nothing. Everyone knew you would receive the largest share of the family wealth.  On top of that; education, training, and any potential status were theirs for the taking.

The second and third son receive smaller portions, simply because of their birth order.

Any son after the third was happy just to be given a job in the family business.  Some were fortunate to prove themselves.  If a nobl...

UL1 - Book 10 - Chapter 20

Max laughed as Miranna toddled toward him.

“That’s it! Come to daddy!”

A babbling girl moved with a grace that seemed impossible for an 18-month-old. Her limbs moved with coordination that Max knew wasn’t like the typical child of this age.

“Why is he smiling so much?” Fowl asked. “This isn’t the first time she’s walked.”

“Quiet you fool,” Batrire said as the toddler paused to stare at the dwarven warrior.

“Ignore them,” Max said. “W...

Not that I anticipated getting anything from them, it feels a little unfair that you get to keep everything.

Bob chuckled as they stared at the massive blue dome before them.  It was over a few miles long and Max had swum above it, seeing that it stretched for over four miles in an oval-like shape.

The power coming from this dom...

“So you’re staying there for how long?” Tanila asked. “You do realize you have a daughter who is going to miss her father?”

“Maybe a week?” Max replied. “And I doubt Miranna is going to miss me since she has three uncles and two aunts who are more than happy to spend time with her.”

“And if it’s too dangerous?”

The question he was waiting for finally came, and he didn’t react.

“I’ll return immediately. As much as I want to protect this wor...

UL1 - Book 10 - Chapter 17

Max sat in a room surrounded by coral, sand, stone, and sea life. Chairs had life teaming around them. The entire room was a testament to the different creatures of the ocean.

Eyorakoa was on her wide couch, a small, bone finger tickled a jellyfish somehow.

This one is very different than what I had expected. Dangerous and yet not.

Like a sea that can be both calm and a raging storm?

Yes… and I can sense that sarcasm when you say tha...

“You need to go,” Jazzjak said. “To not could reduce the amount of DP that planet earns and right now it sits at right over seven thousand. It’s a tier two world and you’ve slowly been losing DP.”

“Should I expect combat? Can I bring the others with me?”

“I don’t know and no. You would also be a fool to bring Edward or any of the other adventurers.  This world is older and it will have stronger foes. I cannot tell you anything other than the message that a...

“I keep trying to remind myself you’re already tier 2,” Jazzjak said.

“Wait, what?!” Fowl exclaimed. “Max isn’t level 1 anymore?!”

Laughter reverberated around the room as everyone gathered seemed to be enjoying a joke their helper was missing out on.

“It’s… because… he was… always level one,” Cordellia finally got out between breaths.

“Seriously?!” Jazzjak asked. “You beat the tower at level one?!”

“Well, having a blac...

“Tell me, what’s going on inside your heart and head?” Max asked.

Sitting on the stone that had been marked for him, Jazzjak took a moment to compose himself.

Can… can I really trust them?

Memories flooded his mind, ones that made him flinch.

Some had used him as a footstool, propping their feet, or other body parts on him, showing each day what they thought of the aid he offered.  Two had killed him within the first three hundred years, upset wit...

UL1 - Book 10 - Chapter 13

Four bells rang out from each corner of the city in perfect unison. The sound was a call to every human and elf to make their way to the central plaza of Sunreach. Each citizen moved with purpose, excitement showing in their walk and faces as they moved as one, prepared to meet the pair who had created them.

Max Hoste stood on a stone platform he had created using his magic. It was black, standing out against the normal brown and tan stone often found within the city.  He was dress...

UL1 Book 10 - Chapter 12

No one spoke, yet the heartbeat of twenty thousand pulsed as one.  Sunlight streamed through green leaves, turning the white marble pathway into a path of rays of light. Great oaks curved upward and outward until the tops of the trees touched.  A colossal ring of life cradled Cordellia’s city like a circlet.  In the midst of it all a river wound through, providing life as water so clear, nothing could hide in it.

Cordellia stepped out from the moongate, a woven silverwo...

A warm updraft rose up the rim of the crater the size of a small sea.  Clouds streamed across the sky, pushed like a painter making strokes with their brush.  In the center of the bowl was a lake so smooth that it reflected back the image of what was above.

Rakonath, silver from tail to horn, glided across the rim with ease. Wind was swept away by his wings, each beat of them reflecting the light of the sun like a polished mirror.  He circled once, breathing in the scent ...

Torchlights flickered, casting light from inside the iron gate that swung open.  Blue and orange lights came from gems set inside the metal, creating an ethereal glow around the edges.

Two gods were carved on the inside and outside of each door. One on the left, one on the right.  When sealed, their hands touched. When open, they beckoned all who desired to enter.

Batrire Hammerfall strode out first.  She took a deep breath and smiled. The air carried the hint of oa...

An obsidian gate slid open and Sog stepped through.

He smiled, feeling a sense of pride and knowing that this was his home. This was his place. Unlike his other world, one might challenge him and destroy everything he had built in a moment. But here… he was the master.

Power radiated from the stone beneath his hand. It thrummed like a heartbeat, rich with life.

He strode out on the wide bridge of black iron that arched across what looked like a bottomless gulf....

Sog was right. It’s hard to believe it’s been a month.

Talking with Bob, Max watched the six craftsmen and women who were working the forges he had set up.  Each was carrying out the instruction he had given, sweat beading down their body as they worked near the hot fires.

“Slow down some, Victoria. You’re not beating that like a rug. Smooth and steady strokes. Watch how the metal stretches and lengthens.”

A single nod was all the woman he had coached...

Jazzjak fidgeted slightly, taking a deep breath.

“What I’m going to share with you is known by a few. Most of the newer gods, all under tier five, most likely don’t follow this because either they ignore their assistants, spend time fighting amongst each other, or a variety of other reasons.
