Project Aether Page 11 (Final)

I hurt my back bad enough that I had to go to the hospital, so I lost some considerable work time but this page took a lot of work to finish all the same. A new setting means a new color palette to determine. The good news is that the next pages should go much faster because I've finalized all of those decisions. Almost 50 layers on this one!

Edit: Corrected typo and added Lym's shirt paint texture.

Lymselia

A simple drawing of Lym. My intent is to use this for a few assets like the StudioSR3 website.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I really like how Lym and Simone came out in panels 5 and 6.

Update: Corrected a typo, oops!

Project Aether Chapter 1 Cover (rough preview) and release plans

Here is a rough planning sketch of the cover to Project Aether chapter 1. I went through a few different versions, which is only natural seeing as how the cover is the most important part of the book. Even though they say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the truth is that by and large people do.

The first cover draft was basically what you see as the banner now, with Lym smiling and Ascalon behind her. I didn't feel that this was a good representation of the story, seeing as how...

These are moving at a pretty good clip. I may even be done with all of these before July is out.

Project Aether Page 1 (final)

I've been working on the cover the past few weeks (part of it is done, you may have noticed new banners here and on the main website), but I took a break to finish page 1. As predicted, this didn't take too long.

Project Aether Page 23, 24, and 25 (Black and White)

Uploading this one out of order because I need to make some of Lym's cards for page 23, so that'll take a little longer than this one.

Update: I've added page 23.

Update: I've updated page 24 and added page 25.

Okay, those are the B&W pages of chapter 1 done. Phew. I aim to finish the chapter 1 cover by the end of the month, and then move on to coloring. That actually shouldn't take too long, this was the hard part.

Here's the last page, sorry for the delay. Wanted to make sure I was satisfied with this character reveal.

Oh darn, I forgot to pop in that AE in Aether. I gotta pencil that in manually. I'll fix that soon.

Update: The corrected page is uploaded.

...and Levant's match is over. It is intentionally dull, if Lym's reaction didn't make that clear. Levant is able to just brute force his victories, whereas matches after this will need their summoners to be a bit more creative (or lucky) if they are to achieve victory.

In a nutshell, that's the theme of the story. Is the point of a game to play or to win? Likewise, is the point of art to create or to succeed?

This spell will make another appearance much later in the story.

Project Aether Page 16 and 17 (Black & White)

That obligatory moment where you gotta explain the basic rules of your magic card game. PAE used to have a system where summoners had magic barriers around them that their opponent needed to weaken in order to win (see the pilot). One day I tried mapping out what PAE would look like as a physical card game, and came up with this design where your offense and defense would come from the same pool, making for a high risk/ reward system where one move could be game changing if clever enough. The...

So, while I was working on the Black and White page 16 I realized that I never uploaded the lines for pages 22-24. Oops, sorry about that! There is only one more page left in chapter 1, but it is a full page spread of a new character (kinda) so I want to give it a bit more focus.

Black and white uploads coming within the week.

Project Aether Page 14 (Black & White) + Card

There are a lot of place holder colors in this page, particularly with the succubus here. The parts in purple will be semi-transparent with a sparking effect inside.

Levant is our antagonist, and his deck does not have any consistent theming, which you'll see as other decks are introduced. This is an intentional metaphorical element of the story.

I'm also including the card he is holding. I've decided that cards in Project Aether will all have this painted look to them. It is in l...

Blue lines for the beginning and end of the first Aether Clash fight. Yes, it all happens over 4 pages, and that's intentional, but don't worry, the next one is almost an entire chapter.

Project Aether Pages 11 & 12 (Black & White)

I've got a whole bunch of stuff coming down the pipeline over the next couple of days.

In previous versions of the story this is about the point where we would be stalling for several pages establishing Lym's hang ups and motivations. Simone was re-written partially to literally drag her (and me I suppose) into the action.

Here's the rest. The setup for the story is about done here, and we start the fun part of the story over the next few pages.

Okay, we've finished the cold open and are now in our main story with our main cast.

B&Ws of pages 7-10 will be uploaded very soon; some if not all definitely tomorrow.

Heh, I drew this a lot faster than I anticipated, but it is a considerably simpler page than the others, so that checks out. This page features an easter egg, with the big octopus Avatar is named Reginald.

Project Aether Page 14 (Blue Lines)

This is the page where we get a first good look at the chief antagonist, Levant. The themes of Levant's deck are darkness and parasites. This isn't an elemental foil to Lymselia, her deck's themes are robots, inspiration, and legacy, but it does serve as an effective foil to her thematic journey as the story progresses.

The first Avatar Levant summons is Moira, the Abyss Succubus, who has the ability to absorb the Aether of incoming energy attacks. Each deck has three summon creat...

This is the blue line stage of the process. I got a lot to finish in a week and a half, but normally I do 4 of these, so this shouldn't be too rough (hopefully)
