froggy proggy progress
New drums, new bass, new whole bunch of things, but not new vocals. Still need to work on those!

After doing the iconic doughnut and chair modelling tutorial, thought I'd try modelling something of my own. Lots of cockups corrected too late, during the sculpting of millions of triangles (and not just a few box modelled quads). Usually it's faces being inside the model causing the sculpting to mess up.
No idea how to retopologise, rig, or if my computer could handle all the fur, once I get there. All rather exciting. I'll be disappointed if the face rig isn't expressive, but I have ...

Took a couple turns with a bossa nova bit, noisy synth solos, and a jazzy ending. Of course, I need to record the vocals properly with lyrics, redo the sloppy bass and chords (I played it on the spot just to get the idea down), do my own drums (they're nicked from YouTube), and replace little bits that repeat with something improvised each time round.
Although maybe I'll look at other unfinished songs; there's such a big pile of unfinished tunes and this is just adding to the pile...

The music set-up isn't quite as ergonomic as I first thought; not unless I have two chairs anyway. But it is indeed capable of making noises and I'm learning the new workflow. It IS better, at least.
The drums are copyrighted, mp3 quality backing tracks, ripped from YouTube. I decided I can't live with metronomes any longer, they just are awful. So I've made a bunch of track templates in REAPER that load up various real drum loops as inspiration for playing less like a robot, and what r...

My attempt to "remember" the surreal colours I saw during a walk til I got back.
I started by picking the most neutral part of the view (to me that would be the middle of the sky there) and radiating outwards from that point making relative judgements in the change of hue; "oh, it's getting more pinky-orange towards the sun, more blue towards the horizon, etc. etc.". Not sure if that's the way you're supposed to see colour, but it's difficult to be an "absolute" colour see-er and ...

Repurposed another desk for the music set-up so I can use the old desk for the animation stuff, huzzah! Still need to finish writing the next cartoon and record the dialogue for it, but I'm really pleased with the outline so far (it's going to be about the Knight Foxglove character).

Bit of music from The Goodies with a disco beat plonked on top. Was just testing if the Sampletrak inputs and outputs were working in the patchbay.

Got MIDI working again, so of course I exploit that ability with QUANTISATION!
Obviously just some noodling with frequent false starts and out of tune "aah"-ing, which is how I like to come up with melodies; play chords on loop until you catch yourself humming something, grab a mic, record that, then later transcribe that to notes.
EDIT: updated the tune a little. There's now a nice organny sounding pad swell and funky vocoder. Th...

Actually when scribbling little sections of a story at 1am I don't bother with designs, only enough information to distinguish one character from the other.

Drummy Time's one of those songs where I like half the ideas scattered throughout but not the other half, so I'm starting with just the stuff I life. I'll probably change the drums too one day; they don't have much fidelity. But then again that might kill the grooooove. No harm done though, because there's always the original.

Moved house, and I'm very glad there's not a giant beam halfway across the room for me to bash my head on. Looks like there's enough room to set both my music desk and animation desk too! Just need another table. I'm as eager to start working on another cartoon as you'd expect, although with a 2nd lockdown coming I probably won't be able to get my grandparents to do the dialogue for a while (all the better excuse to polish up the story further). For now here's another llama, testing my tablet...

Tune from 2015. I kind of want to go back and experiment with this tune more, although it'd mean rerecording practically everything so maybe not.

Trying out acrylics and ink since I thought the bright opaque colours and texture would go nicely with the ink lines. (Rubbish smartphone picture's cos the scanner broke.)
Anybody know if there's a way to avoid the sketch or ink lines getting completely covered though? It's kind of a double-edged sword. I like covering up mistakes but I want the lines I want to keep black, and cover up the sketch only when I'm done inking.
This thing has not just split-keyboard but a sequencer too, so I can do my own backing to noodle over. Rather therapeutic (by the time I got to recording, my hands got a bit tired). Some SPX90 gated reverb too.
Whatever happened to good performance synths? Now it's all either presets or separate MIDI keyboards and little boxes.

Someone asked about the brushes I used and ended up getting one. Once I'm happy enough with the versatility of my brushes (and found a way to "host" them) I'll make a download for you folk!

Not much to say about this 'cept this is all the music I really have time to make the way things currently are. Still I enjoyed making it.

Tho the heads a bit badger-ish, just a quick sketch so I didn't bother looking at actual photos of skunks nor bandits.

Mucking about with CSP brushes again. Things may be quiet here for a bit (I know I keep saying that). I'm going to be moving house again (kicked out, but this one was shite anyway) and got a lot of things to clear up.

Hour noodle. This is what happens if I listen to late 80's Queen, sorry, but could be a potential seed for a future song.

Around a decade ago (when charity shops/boot fairs actually were rewarding) I got an Atari ST computer with Notator MIDI. I still think it has the best quantiser and just generally worked right away with no fiddling about. Compared to a Yamaha RM1X or even FL Studio that loves to completely quantise to the wrong step. Nowadays, MIDI involves USB and latency bollocks. Here's a few tunes I did with it and a Yamaha DJX acting as a sound module (I didn't have any better back then). Feel ...

I don't know why I default to abstraction when I'd rather get into caricaturing what's actually funny about a real metal dustbin etc.

Getting evicted and finding new place etc within the next couple months, so apologies if again it gets yet more quiet. Thanks for sticking around those who have done though! I have big plans, once bigger obligations stop happening. The big plans being more music and a Knight Foxglove cartoon.

To be honest I sample Roobarb a tonne (Johnny Hawksworth is a genius), but here's one that's predominantly Roobarb sounds. Mixed in mono 'cause my set-up's been messed up again while I wait for the audio interface to get fixed. Also, apologies for the Patreon being a little desolate lately; very busy being pressed to get on with things I'm not particularly proud of.
edit: slight update

He's been a donator and a nice chat for quite a while now, so I did a drawing of his character, App!
I was on holiday for the past week but back now. Also social media's driving me mad, anything better than Twitter?

3:22 is the most different, with Erebus funk bass, reharmonisation (unfinished), and a "drunk" beat.
Abyss is only a codename btw, named after the synth I started this tune with. I'm pissed 'cause I think the UMC1820's MIDI Out has died.

Some samples are missing 'cause I forgot to put them on the new music computer. Replaced the drums with my own (I'm a terrible player so it's quantised and the "kick" is just me thumping my chest), real glockenspiel, and oooh-aahhs (sped up slightly to reach that high note).
