The new Down the Rabbit Hole is now only about a day from completion, and all of the patron names have been added to the credits. It will release either Wednesday or Thursday, assuming that YouTube plays nicely. If you pledged before yesterday evening, then your name will be in the credits of the new Down the Rabbit Hole.
After some consideration, however, I am making the difficult decision to remove the $1 tier. All patrons at $1 will still receive progress upd...

This will be the final progress update before the new Down the Rabbit Hole release next week, assuming that YouTube plays nice.
Arcaxon, the graphic designer, has just completed all of his animations for the new video. Now, the only thing to do is to edit everything together, which is coming along quite well. Both Ryan and Arcaxon have done their work in such a way that makes my job remarkably easy, and so much of what remains is simply fitting the pieces together. My d...

[Note from Fredrik: The above clip is without music, but it will be present in the final cut of the video.]
Hi Patrons, It's me the Graphic Designer, Christopher(Arcaxon); So remember last update when I said I was half way done?
Yeah I lied, not that I meant to, this being my first time doing most of any of this it was quite a learning experience, I'd say I was 35% done timewise but creative wise(like thinking of ideas/implementations) around maybe 60%.
Thankfull...

We're in the final stages of creating this video. Right now, Ryan is finishing up the last of the music, and Arcaxon needs just a bit more time to create the graphic design. What he's making is remarkably intricate, and so he's going to need a bit longer than what we were expecting. While he's finishing up, it gives me time to cut together everything else. We estimate the video to be ready in 2-3 weeks. We're in the final phases, which is mostly just putting all of the pieces...

With the narration done, I'm now cutting all of the sections together and sending them off to Ryan and Arc to have the music and animations fit to them. Since there's so much narration, this process will likely take another couple of days, but I'm able to keep up with the work that they're doing. I expect the video to be ready in about two weeks, but I'm aiming for a week and a half. The video editing won't take me nearly as long as it otherwise would because so ...

The narration for the new Down the Rabbit Hole is now complete. My current time estimate looking at the narration is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, though I could easily be off by 10 minutes.
This estimated length is interesting when compared to the Wings video, which was approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes long; the script for WingsofRedemption was 11,000 words, while this one is nearly 20,000 words. The reason for this similarity is that nearly half of the runtime in the former...

Just a quick update to let you all know. Recording of the final narration begins Tuesday, besides the intro which I recorded this afternoon and sent to Ryan so he could get just a few more clipsfrom our vocalist.
Final word count is 19,592 words. For reference, the Wings of Redemption video was about 11,000 words long, so this is the first time that I'm going to have to spread out the recording over multiple days. I'll let you all know as soon as it's finished being recorded and cut tog...

[Note from Fredrik: if you decide to only listen to a bit of the sample, the synth that Ryan uses at about 1:55 is my personal favorite part]
Hi everyone, Ryan again,
I wanted to show off a little bit of the music, and in the audio file you can hear a few examples at various stages of completion.
Like I mentioned before I’m scoring the soundtrack in Sibelius:

[Be advised: this progress update contains moderate spoilers for the topic; while the precise topic itself isn't revealed, the general area of focus will be, so if you are looking to go into the new video completely fresh, it may be best to skip this update. The last update was written by Ryan Probert, the composer for Down the Rabbit Hole, and this time, I'm giving my graphic designer the chance to share his work so far]

Hi everyone,
Something a little different with a music department update.
Thank you to all those who responded to my request for musicians and thank you to everyone for their support. I will get in touch with everyone who responded to the survey after the new episode is finished.
The new episode will feature sixteen pieces of music, of which ten are finished right now. I have been to trying to keep up with Fred’s script, aiming to finish the soundtrack in...

The script is coming along quickly, and it should be ready in the next couple of days. (I know I've said this before, but this time I'm much more certain) The most difficult parts are well behind me. However, this script has become an Everest that grows; where I once thought it would be half the size it is now, it will almost undoubtedly be longer than 20,000 words. For reference, the script for the Austrian Wine Poisoning was approximately 5,000 words. With that video at about 35 minutes lon...

This is a little different: this is a children's book with which I grew up, and I thought that I'd share it all with you while I try my hand at narrating children's literature. Enjoy.

I knew that this script would be long, but I didn't suspect how long when I began it. I aim to finish the script some time in the next week, but by the time I do, it seems likely that it will be novella-length (>17,000 words), and the information contained in it is remarkably thick. As the script stands now, it's at 11,000 words, but the most difficult sections are finished.
Part of the reason it's taking longer than usual is that the topic is particularly specialized, and this makes...

As Down the Rabbit Hole and the Patreon continues to grow, Ryan and I are constantly looking for ways to improve it and make it a more engaging and engrossing experience. One of the best decisions I made was to bring on Ryan to compose original music, and as time has passed, I've given him more and more free reign, and now we're looking to expand this even further. Up to this point, Ryan has been using synthesized instruments, but to add more texture, he would like to use real instruments, an...

The most difficult part of the script is finished, but it's already massive. It likely will be 1.5 to 2 hours long, but there will be perhaps only one or two spaces given over to source footage. The rest will all be narration. This is in contrast to the Wings video, of which approximately half was source footage. This topic has been incredibly complicated, and putting it together in a way that both works as a story and makes it accessible while capturing the complexity of it has been difficul...

Hard part of the script is done
Script is going to be massive
Ryan has been writing music as the script is written and will fit it to the final narration when it's recorded
Visual art from Anton Oxenuk is finished and all is incredibly beautiful. Prints will be for sale by Anton when the video launches.

August 8th, 2020 marks the 4-year anniversary of my very first Down the Rabbit Hole video on Digital Homicide Studios. Seeing that the new video is just around the corner as well, I thought it would be fun to have a group viewing session on the Patreon Discord where we watch my old, first video together and juxtapose it with my most recent one, the Austrian Wine Poisoning, to see just how far the series has come and to make fun of my old work. We'll also be doing a Q&A about the productio...

Subscribers are a funny thing on YouTube. In practice, they don't do terribly much for most channels, but they're a little different for me. I never ask people to subscribe, and I never ask people to pledge to my Patreon, but you're all here anyways, and that makes both subscriber and Patreon milestones matter that much more. So thank you all, truly, for helping me make my weird interests into my career.

This story from 1944 is excellent and enduring; while lacking the dynamic circumstances present in most "darker" media, this one left an impression on me that hasn't left for some time. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Research began almost immediately after the last video
Reading two books for this one, one that hasn't arrived yet
I have a few other projects that I can't talk about yet, some because they're under NDA.
I'll let you know once I'm done with the first book, it's about 300 pages and so far is quite interesting.

This Q&A is going to be a bit different: this time, rather than doing it all myself, I'm going to have my research assistant and translator, DerEineSchwarzeRabe (or simply Vex), joining me. They're an Austrian native, and while they were born some time after the scandal, they do live in wine country, and they're eager to help answer some of your questions; they did a lot of reading, and there's plenty of information that wasn't included in the video, so it's quite likely that they could h...

This reading comes from a book that I purchased for research into the newest Down the Rabbit Hole topic. While this book wasn't about the Austrian wine scandal in particular, it did have much useful information, and some of the stories he tells are fascinating, enough so that I saw fit to share them with all of you. Please enjoy. I hope that you all will forgive my abysmal efforts to speak French, Italian, and German.
