Preview for your consideration making trimethyl orthoformate again.
Previously i made it because it was a necessary precursor to making pyrimethamine. But now i'm just making it because i want to. Should i still give it a full video like this? or should i instead stuff it into a lab notes video? By itself it's only interesting to other chemists and amateurs rather than the general public. Maybe put it on hold entirely until i do have a use for it?
Let me know what you think. ...

Based on suggestions here. I added the experiment with ethanol.
Let me know if you think it's ready.

Latest video for your review. A VERY simple one. Let me know how you like it. I just thought after doing novel research for a year i'd start back to basics again.

A very quick preview for your review. Its only 5 minutes though. Is it publishable? should i hold on until i have enough material for a 10 minute lab notes video?
Is my video game playing too pretentious?
Thanks :)

Still a work in progress. You can tell by the british computer voice. I'm refilming the dioxane separation step since the original version was of crappy quality. Anyway, let me know what you think of the video so far. If i can refilm the dioxane separation step, then i hope to release this weekend, maybe next weekend at the latest.

Still a massive work in progress but you get the basic idea. I'll post the final version tomorrow if i can finish it in time.

I know it's short... at the same time, whenever i think of putting something in, i feel like i'm leaving so much more out. I've never been very good at celebrations or thank yous. If you think there is something more i should put in, let me know.

Apologies for the slow rollout, this video was actually filmed two weeks ago. But i've been so busy with the holidays and visiting family that i couldn't get to editing until recently.
anyway, let me know if its good to post or if there any changes, more explanations or clarifications you'd like to see.
This is likely going to be my only video for this month due to time crunch.

Preview of my next video for your consideration.
I gotta admit this is the most hilarious thumbnail youtube has ever generated. the particular image is only there for 3 seconds.
Anyway, the video is half an hour long and very information dense.
As usual, let me know of any suggestions or improvements. I want to get this done by tomorrow (nov 30th)

Something i have never shown you before is how i'm editing my videos before i narrate them. Sometimes if i expect a video to be very long or very complicated i use a text to speech synthesizer to auto-narrate the video so i can edit quicker. Using my actual voice takes longer since i go through several takes to get the right intonation. And if i make changes, i have to narrate all over again.
What text to speech synthesizer do i use? A British female voice that is hilariously different from my...

Good thing i didn't post the video last week, because i was able to squeeze in another reaction with some new alcohols.
So this new version is almost exactly the same as before but i also test secondary alcohols as well. The new stuff begins at around 3:54, when you get the phenols part the video proceeds as before.
it's just a couple of minutes of testing secondary alcohols and showing that they actually work, just very badly. It's useless since we already have better catalysts, but a v...

Another preview for your consideration. I was trying to get it done yesterday so i'd have 3 videos for october but just couldn't meet the deadline due to my new job. Hopefully things will settle down.
Anyway. As usual, let me know your thoughts. I'll probably post this to youtube on the 10th.
On a different note, some have asked what i'm going to do about the cyanide video. I might make a video where i describe the whole process and the science so it's obvious to anyone ...

Another preview for your consideration. It's very rough with missing content but you should get the idea.
I originally meant to have this ready last week but i landed a new job, so i've been busy. Expect reduced video production as i settle in.

2018-09-30 14:25:26 +0000 UTC View PostJust so there are no surprises, tomorrow I'm going to post an old video that was never published publicly until now.
I already had a preview for it last year seen here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/12266392
It's basically the science of brake fluid and pool chlorine. You can check the above link if you want a preview anyway.
I held off on publishing last year because Grant Thompson posted a very ...
