O, Sky Egg!

Hey pals!

I am happy to say that this is False Knees comic number 400! I've got a feeling that the 400s will have some good ones.

Also! Mélodie and I have been working long hours (mostly Mélodie) to put together a new False Knees store, and it is up and running as of today! Here's a link: https://store.falseknees.com/

I'm very happy with the way that it turned out! And I owe it all to Mélodie. S...

Strong Lady

I felt like a different style today!

I've recently been trying to use up some art supplies that I've been holding on to for years. Most notable has been a stack of old tracing paper that I discovered works pretty well with india ink! So I have been pencil sketching on regular paper and then inking clean lines on tracing paper. It doesn't sound like much, but it allows me to have several attempts at laying down my ink lines, which don't always go down super pretty. It adds a physical l...

Volume 4

Back to some quick comics this week! Mélodie chose some prompt words and gave them to me one at a time. I gave myself six minutes to think of and draw each one.

Birdsafe

Hey pals! A bit of a different comic this week! I made this working with Bird Safe Guelph to help spread some information about birds and window collisions.

- the issue: between 16 and 42 million birds die from fatal window collisions each year in Canada

- the solution: retrofitting windows is an easy and effective solution to preventing bird deaths

- the details...

The Honkening (Patreon exclusive comic)

Hey pals! This comic is based on this character I saw from my house. I jumped outside immediately to take some photos of our new ruler.

I hope you all are having a great night!

6-minute comics vol. 3

I hung out with some comics buds this past week and did another 6-minute comic session, this time hosted by Sven (check out Sven's comics here).

I haven't had much time to make art recently because Mélodie and I are trying to finish a lot of house projects that we've been putting off for a long time. As the saying goes: the real work gets done in the second year of a pandemic. More new (colour) c...

Six minute comics

Thank you for your prompts last Sunday! It was difficult to not look at everybody's comments all week, but I didn't peek! Mélodie helped me out by picking the words, and I gave myself six minute timers for each one. I allowed myself access to the folder of reference pictures I have on my computer so that they wouldn't all end up being chickadees or crows (both of which I'm pretty comfortable drawing from my head).

Stronger Together

I had so much fun making the first "stronger together" comic a couple weeks ago that I redid it with even more detail!

Here's a photo of the full sheet with the pencil I used to draw it:

Gouache sunset & some 6-minute comics

A few evenings ago I saw the setting light catch the top of a hill, making a gorgeous grouping of colours–so I felt compelled to try to capture it in paint. I may end up using this colour palette in a comic.

Inner Jungle

I've been meaning to do a comic about these finches I saw in a local butterfly conservatory for about 2 years now. I didn't really know what the subject was until I started drawing this one last week. A good example of how life will seep into comics.

Happy ❤️day!

I was originally going to draw this using people (Mélodie and me) but thought it would be more fun with crows! I like the way it turned out, so I was thinking I might make it into a full-fl...

Hair of the dog

I came up with this comic this morning while hanging out (digitally) and playing with some other cartoonist pals. The original that I made with the prompt 'beer' and six minutes is below! It was a great way to get ideas out quickly. And when you're forced to do things quickly, you get right to the point!

Hourly Comic Day 2021 (part 1)

Today was hourly comic day, a day some cartoonists challenge themselves to draw a comic for every hour that they are awake. I didn't do that, haha. I made an effort to make as many comics as I could today, and here is the result of that! I think I'll try to do some more as the week goes on. What I take away from the exercise is rewarding. Smaller ideas illustrated faster.

It also gives me a chance to make sort of surreal autobiographical comics, which is how I started out in comics! S...

Remember

*UPDATED the comic so that it actually sort of makes sense now!

Good evening! And welcome to all the newcomers!

This comic is an example of one that changed several times through the process of making it. It went through a few iterations of existentialism and silly jokes before I landed on the final wording. Often, no matter how many hours I put into the artwork, it's the final half hour or so that really determines the ultimate sentiment–for better and/or for worse!

Holiday Watercolours

Here are a few small watercolours I painted over the past couple days. It is very much winter in southern Ontario! Perfectly timed snowfall turned a green (brown) Xmas eve into a white one!

Happy new year! I'm so grateful for this little community. I'm returning to comics next week and looking forward to coming up with some fresh ideas. Out with the old (birds), in with the new (newer birds)!

First Snow

When I sit down to make a comic, my first instinct is to draw an animal being quiet in nature, because I enjoy being quiet in nature. I wonder if my local city birds yearn for more quiet. A few weeks ago there was a heavy overnight snowfall which left the street feeling calmer and more intimate. I kept wanting to know what my neighbourhood crows thought about it.
