Seamus, gotta re record.

Well, the title says it all. Shit happens and it's one of those. or maybe but I highly doubt it.. it was recorded right and unfortunately reverb is put on first and very wet.

Drumbus vs Kick/Bass Bus

Totally jealous of your late 90's setup. Regardless, see the bussing as a way to control rhythm/accentuate it. If you have a super rhythmic low end then I would try and control that via a bus together with the kick. This way the kick will compress down more and make that the prominent feature of the low end rhythm. Mind your attack (slower) and release (fast to mid ..or even slow if you want it to breath). Generally harder minimal music will benefit from bass/kick setups.

Auto pan or delay on your hi hats?

Auto pan will give you the exact same sound panned left to right (generally sounds nice on 16th). Delay will give you a different texture from the first hat that can ping pong or mid side (especially nice on 1/8th). However, watch out adding in more hats with the latter as it can quickly become cluttered.

Kulpa getting ready for a dj

Alright, so it's all good. Here are changes you need to do before friday.

1. Up hat in the middle not on the left.

2. Random fun sends on the main stab

3. Secondary stab in the middle (it can be in stereo via reverb but not out of phase on the right)

4. Bridge add a clap on the 1 2 3 4. Automate volume and crowd noise. After flange it out or endless smile to drop

5. Bit of stereo on the rumblel

Change the rest too if you have time but focus on just th...

Wouter's feedback

The drums are a tad too loud but only in the mid. Whatever happened  with processing, half it or delete it. That should solve the problem in one go. The next thing is the percussion is way way way too low. Saturate it heavy and cut so that it's audible and short in the 80hz above register. If it's too bright just shave of the top until it sounds nice and groovy again. As always brilliant work with the melodics

More vocal tips

Can saturation not be harmonic.. (no it can't). But it can be inharmonic (even-odd harmonics). For the rest I give a lot of tips on vocal processing and specifically setting up.

Absolutely brilliant job on the main sound. There are a few things that are misplaced but all the ingredients are there. So, just please finish those last parts off (get obsessed :)

Gessafelstein

It all comes down to one of those auto filter boxes and letting it be driven hard. I can't tell the notes in one go but at the end of the day if you set the glide up correct and get the right notes it comes down to experimenting with autofilter plugins or the ableton version. It's all in the distortion and that is a bit of a taste thing. Cool stuff though! Wonder if that synth they use has a vst version

What speakers to get

If you are producing and have no treatment than you can get the prettiest once you want. If you want to mix instead first fix your room via acoustics.

Limiter vs Clipper 2

Again, use it for a bad mix/bad master or if you have to go death magnetic loud. Personally I would fix anything that is messing with the limiter too much in the mix. You can clip those tracks, or if it's a mastering situation try RX or multibanding away the issue. At the end of the day your limiter is the guy who will say if something is good or bad. Also try different limiters.. Most will be more or less lenient to what you are trying to achieve. And last, stop looking at your sound (this i...

Limiter vs Clipper

In the specific case to dBora. Make two busses. One for Staccato and the other for Legato. Short burst of sound vs Long sustained notes. On the Short sounds plop the clipper on the Long sustained group plop in a limiter. Put them both up the same amount. Then on your main master drop in your last limiter and adjust the balance again with an EQ and a compressor to make the song have transients again.. (head scratch I know but watch the video below)

For anybody reading this. Don't do the ...

Yalcin Efe and his chain

My thoughts on his mastering chain is the same as always. The more you do the worse it gets.  He is a perfect example of overthinking. I highly suggest you watch Dan instead: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQnz5mUTDkGwKvIQ9uyqiXw . Also start listening to the mastering show by Ian Shepherd

His production might be great or mixing but redflags go off when you see this much going on. You...

Four Tet FM bass sound

Four Tet used FM. It's a UK thing and I absolutely love it haha. It's super easy to do. Just adjust open up operator. Use A as the sub, B into it with the coarse up level up and set the decay short. After for the counter melody just put the coarse further up.. Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt. Also, I made an hour long video on FM for Abletunes you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny3sftUJJTA<...

Drums, just slap them silly

/here is a general video on drums. It all comes to compression, not cutting too much and making sure you slap the banana's out of your drumbus. That way you will always have heavy drums

Wouter's mix feedback

Regarding the stereo field you did a great job. I would highly recommend putting the drums up and piano down.

A trick to get your Lead up front and be spacious

Make a send, pop on what ever you need it to be. In this case a reverb and delay group and after put a compressor that side chains to the lead. Space will appear more after the lead is played. As for compression etc, I suggest first getting all staccato (rhythm) elements playing nice and tight together. See it as a drum circle. After add in your pads/space/reverb and lastly the lead. It will immediately come apparent what you can still do or what you can delete to keep the lead up front. ...

Four Tet sound and how I reverse engineer in general

It's a sample played in a sampler of any type without warping. Pitch is played via a keyboard as you can hear the steps. Does not have to be a keyboard btw but you can just hear the jump in pitch.

As for how I do it watch the video on just reverse engineering the bleep sound.  It comes down to making weird sounds with my mouth and questioning my life choices haha

Stereo image and mono compatibility

Use a correlation meter. If you are in the +1 area all of that will be mono compatible. Even if you have stereo information. All the elements that are below 0 will be out of phase and that is not the worst thing in the world. It just means that if someone would play back in mono that element would come in and out of the mix. If it's a pad or something absolutely in the back of the song I would not worry. Instead I would start listening to references and write down what elements have side info...

In this video we go over:

1. Seamus's Dua Lipa bass and song. (In short cut less and it will thicken out the song)
2. Wouter's loop based track (in short more compression on the drums try dbx 160 in parallel and give more mid end smack. turn off any transient desginer
3. Christopher's low end 16th thump (indian "water" drum and a delay will do the trick) plus foley

Q and A 3

In this video we go over:

1. upgrading to a new mac book
2. How to fix wide sounds and do you really too?
3. Does saturation add punch? (NO) it does the opposite, dynamics( slower setting compression) adds punch. You can compress a saturated signal to add punch. Saturation does make introduce harmonics so it is heard more but it does not do the magic punch thing.

Funny thing is that saturation is over-compression set to a stupendously fast attack and release time. I gu...
