Weekend Watch

It’s Friday and the start of June! Happy Pride! Much love to all of our queer and questioning, Patreons. We want you here and we will continue to work for your safety, celebrating your intersections, and rooting for you to thrive.

What’s everyone watching? My Liberation Notes took over my entire week and heart and soul. I have 2 episodes left. My feelings have feelings. But I did take a quick pause to rewatch The Handmaiden which we are doing a podcast on today! It’s on Amazon Pri...

(Idea from a Patreon): A drama you watched just because it sounded completely different from anything you had watched before or you needed to cure drama hangover after a particular poignant drama.

Happy Friday, folks! Is it just me or did May seem to last 100 years? What is everyone watching. I need to catch up on some Tail of the Nine Tailed and start Extraordinary You. But I also started My Liberation Notes and so far I love it.

Unburden Yourself

End of the school year should not happen in May and yet here I am now with a 2nd and 7th grader (and high schooler after next week). It’s been a whirlwind and I’m 100% not prepared for everyone to be out of class and staring at me, but life waits for no one!

I’m jumping into a new drama tonight and have no idea where the fancy will strike. In the meantime, we haven’t had a good unburden thread for awhile. What is something you need to get off your chest (if you are spoiling some...

Fandom Name Ideas

So for a long time, we have wanted a fandom name for our AfterNoona community. Think Swifties, or ARMY, or Carats. And since you are the community, we would love to hear your thoughts/ideas. Something simple with one word and easy to say would be great! Any suggestions? We will gather some of our faves and maybe throw in a few of our own suggestions for a final poll. THANK YOU!

I Would Do Anything Thing For Love…

Including sitting on the side of 66th Avenue in Oakland at 4amwith some of my Patreon friends and podcast co-hosts (shout out to Alison, Becky, Lexi and Tonya).

We braved dehydration, street rats (not seen just warned about), sidewalk sleeping, boredom, cold, etc and got great spots for the AgustD x Min Yunki x Suga concert. More on that life-affirming experience to come.

What would you bear a great deal of discomfort for to do? All in the name of love lol

Kdrama Game

Without naming a drama, describe it in two words and see if we can guess it.

Like “sad shower” aka Her Private Life.

After a day you can come back and see if folks guess right!

Weekend Watching Thread

Me (Megan): I am very eager for new Joseon Attorney and Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 episodes, which drop this weekend. I'm also planning on starting Black Night with my husband.

Lea: I think she's finishing up Our Dating Sim. She's also dealing with the influx of visitors for the concert next week!

Amy: Watching Extraordinary You and likely starting Black Night as well.

What are you all watching?

A Healing Drama?

What’s a K-drama that has felt particularly healing for you? Something in the story patched together a little tear in your heart or gave you new perspective or had a message you needed to hear?

For me…Our Blues. So many of the vignettes had a message or theme that so personally resonated with me. I was honestly a dehydrated little raisin by the end of this drama due to all my sobbing. But it felt cathartic and helped me work a few things out or examine some feelings I had been not s...

Trope-tastic

One of the best things about romantic dramas is how they lean hard into classic tropes. Here is a pretty good list of popular tropes…which is a favorite? Which one do you stay away from? Why?

Friends to lovers

Enemies to lovers

Forbidden love

Secret identity/billionaire/royal

Forced proximity – ‘trapped in an elevator’

Best friend’s brother/sister

Second chance

Fated mates

Fake relationship

Wedding fever – runaway brides/...

Plot Holes, Plot Holes Everywhere...

Plot holes, plot holes...I don't care? LOL.

Sure...Most of us are here because we totally bought Yoon Se-Ri paragliding through a tornado and into N. Korea. But the plot of CLOY is pretty sound as far as dramas go. However, lately we've realized that even when something goes off the rails, we still may end up loving it. Case in point? Alchemy of Souls. Do we have questions about the soul backpack??? Sure! Do we care? NOPE.

Episodes 1 and 2 of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 are O...

Do I Like Amnesia Plots?

I forget.

Okay…sorry for horrific dad joke. The intrusive thought won! But for real, this has never ever been my trope. But after Alchemy of Souls 2 and binging Japanese BL Jack o’ Frost (Viki, Megan recommended) last night…I might be sold.

Where do you sit on amnesia? And has anyone else seen Jack O’ Frost? I don’t know what they put in the water for Japanese BL but the characters and plots just keep being EXACTLY my thing.

Weekend Watch

I should have been writing this week. I have a novella due next week (I need about 20K words) and guess how many I have written so far? 500. Yes, 500 words. Am I panicking yet? No, but I probably should be.

So what are we watching? I'm caught up with Joseon Attorney: A Morality, and I'm even more in love with Woo Do Hwan. It's not the best drama I've ever seen but it's fun and twisty and WDH is amazing. True to Love has given me the ick and I might drop it. This week, I watched The Eigh...

Today's Bonus Episode

Hey everyone! So today's bonus episode is me fangirling over the hosts of one of my favorite podcasts from Boys Love Boys Planet. Adam and RJ are a true delight, and I know we discuss a lot of niche and kpop content today, but I hope you give it a listen. Adam goes on a rant about how there are no guilty pleasures, which is basically our entire podcast mission statement, so these guys are really kindred spirits

Also! They will soon by covering boy love dramas so I hope you follow their ...

I need to rewatch. But first I have to finish Alchemy of Souls 2 to conclude our pod. I’m watching much slower than usual but look….Suga has started his World Tour and it’s amazing I’ve done any...

Not K-drama...but Bookish

I made a commitment to read more this year. I used to read ALL the time. Then dramas came for me. Then BTS ran a bulldozer through my life. But I AM reading more..about 2 a month which is either nothing or a lot depending on your own reading preferences (I used to read a book a week or more so it's been a downturn).

What are you reading at the moment...or if it's nothing...a book you're looking to start?

I'm currently reading Eat The Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town ...

Character vs Story

So this is a rather unfair question but I’m doing it anyway. Do you gravitate more towards a character-driven story or a plot-driven story and why?
