Video is almost done!

I'm in the final stages of video editing, so assuming the video doesn't have any copyright issues, it'll be out either tomorrow or the day after. See you soon!

Update on the next video

The video script for my upcoming video on the petty bourgeoisie and fascism is finished! I have started recording the audio, and should be able to finish editing it next week. As I mentioned before, the video will focus on the role of the petty bourgeoisie in the rise of Nazism in Germany, before moving to the US, and covering the role of the petty bourgeoisie in the January 6th Capitol riot and the anti-lockdown protests during the pandemic. I hope you'll enjoy it!

Bring back the YouTube dislike count!!!

After realizing how many people resigned themselves to simply having no more visible dislike counts on YouTube, I felt like I HAD to share this extension for the sake of my fellow humans, because I can't imagine not being able to see the like-dislike ratio. I'm not sponsored by them, just want to spread the good word, as it's a free extension. I use it on Chrome and it works perfectly:

Talking about a personal problem

I rarely talk about my personal life on here but I will in this case because it's something highly related to my content creation. The past 1-2 years I have felt like my cognitive abilities have gotten worse. I often feel like my mind is foggy, my short-term memory is worse, I find it harder to think in the abstract and form complicated thoughts. It kinda feels like my mind has become narrower, like it has less RAM to use a computer metaphor. It often bothers me because it makes coming up wit...

About my next video

As the last poll made clear, most of my patrons are interested in seeing a video on the middle class/petite bourgeoisie and their relation to fascism, which I have already started writing the script for. I will be talking about the Nazi Party's support base, and the ways in which it appealed to Germany's lower middle class. Moving on to the present, I will talk about the role of the petite bourgeoisie in the January 6th Capitol riot, as well as the anti-lockdown protests, highlighting the dif...

My book has an official Chinese translation

I can now say that I have ties to the Chinese Communist Party, as my book's Chinese translation was published by their Central Compilation and Translation Bureau. As you can see, the book cover goes incredibly hard.

For those who missed the original English version, it can be found on Repeater Books and most popular online bookstores, including e-book and audi...

What should my next video be about?

It's poll time again! Multiple choice is enabled.

1) There’s an Italian movie about Friedrich Nietzsche called Beyond Good and Evil (1977) that I’d like to talk about simply because of how bizarre it is. This would be a more fun video, and less theory-heavy, talking about Nietzsche's biographical aspects. The movie portrays Nietzsche as being a lot more sexually active than he probably was in real life, and also as a closeted gay man, which I could use as an opportuni...

Which of these topics do you find most interesting?

This is different from my usual poll, because these are video ideas that I haven't developed or researched enough, and there's no guarantee that I'll ever make any of them. I'd just like to know which of these ideas people lean towards the most, so as to know which of them to dedicate research to.

1) The concept of play appears in significant ways in the works of many different philosophers - Schiller, Nietzsche, Gadamer to name a few. Many theorists have seen play as performed by chil...

Newest book purchases

Got 5 new books! All of these are works I've had on my to-read list for a long time.

The first is Schiller as Philosopher by Frederick Beiser. Schiller is one of the most significant figures in German romanticism, and an influence on both Nietzsche and Marx, while Beiser is a great scholar of German philosophy. His book Weltschmerz is probably the best book on German philosophical pessimism in English (which...

Minimal Wave/Minimal Synth recommendations

Here's another set of classic albums to get into this niche genre mentioned in my last vid. Again, the first 3 are my favorites.

Oppenheimer Analysis have some of the catchiest songs in the genre. They have a love for sci-fi and their lyrics often center around the cold war. Devil's Dancers and Subterranean Desire are the catchiest tracks on the album.

Ensemble Pittoresque is a Dutch group. Very quirky, eccen...

My much-requested post-punk music

I finally uploaded the post-punk instrumentals I made for my last video. Track 1 is the song that plays during the title screen and the patron credits, which a lot of people liked.
https://jonasceika.bandcamp.com/album/popular-modernism

It's not the most polished music, as I made it all on cassette, no software, made in one sitting per song, and I'm away from my tape recorder for th...

Goth music recommendations

Here are 9 albums for those who want to get into classic goth music. The first 3 are my personal favorites.

Pornography is probably The Cure's darkest album - the opening track is devastating; but perhaps their most critically acclaimed album is Disintegration, more depressive and also an undeniable goth classic.

Only Theatre of Pain  by Christian Death is THE death rock album, classic goth from LA....

Reading recommendations on Post-Punk and Popular Modernism

Before we get into the texts, I'll recommend the 3-part BBC documentary Punk Britannia, part 3 of which is about post-punk. I drew from it in both research and footage:

Post-Punk Playlist & Script

I made a YouTube playlist of classic British post-punk for those new to the genre, sticking to one song per artist, though the album each song is from is great in its own right. I will be uploading more recommendations soon.

I have also attached the video script.

Post-Punk, Mark Fisher & Popular Modernism

It's finally here!!! I talk about modernist art & Adorno, Mark Fisher on post-war UK culture, British post-punk, brutalism, social-democracy and its decline, and even a bit about Poland.

I aimed to make it interesting to both post-punk fans and people who haven't even heard of the genre, so I hope you enjoy. Excited to hear your feedback!

I'll be coming out with the script, reading material, notes, and music recommendations later. Thanks!

Copyright strikes again

Got a copyright strike because of architecture footage from the 70s that I used less than a minute of, what a great system. It'll take a while to re-export the video so I'll upload it when I wake up in the morning. See you then!

New video coming soon

I should be finishing my video on post-punk and popular modernism today, so assuming there aren't any copyright issues, it'll be out either today or tomorrow. I'm excited for this one, see you soon!

Update

The poll has made clear that the topic on post-punk and popular modernism is the most requested one! I will try to get that out sometime next month.

In the meantime, you might enjoy TheLitCritGuy's video which, although having a different focus than mine will have, talks about the concept of popular modernism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkNrfTUO1NM

What should the next video be about?

Time for a new poll! I will be leaving home for the summer next month and so will be away from my audio recording equipment, and would love to get another video out before that.

Here are the options (multiple choice is allowed!):

1) There’s an Italian movie about Friedrich Nietzsche called Beyond Good and Evil (1977) that I’d like to talk about simply because of how bizarre it is. This would be a (hopefully) more fun video, and I would talk about which parts o...

New video on AI art

For now, this video is Patreon-exclusive. If you guys think it's of some value, I will upload it on YouTube.

It's not very theory-heavy which might disappoint you, but I wanted to just get these thoughts out quickly in short-form.

Hope you enjoy it!

Update on new video

I'm currently editing another short video (about 10 minutes long) with some thoughts on AI art. I frame the topic by comparing it to how people reacted to the rise of photography, which after recording the script I realized has been done before several times, which made me insecure about the script possibly not being very original. What do you think, is it too cliche? Hopefully you'll find it interesting nonetheless.

After this, I will make a new poll to choose the next topic for a lon...

"Tendies 123 has cancelled their membership"
Seeing this today was like a knife through the chest... Tendies123 has been a Patreon name I've read out for almost as long as I've had a Patreon, a real staple of the channel. I'm sad that this name will no longer appear at the end of my videos, but I am also grateful for all the support they've given me... Thank you for your service, Tendies123, we will never forget you.

Q&A on Left-Wing Terrorism?

I've been considering doing a livestream on left-wing terrorism in which I could talk about some of the things I didn't mention in the video, and answer some viewer questions.

If I end up doing this, I would want to prioritize questions from my patrons, so what are some questions you have in relation to my video on left-wing terrorism?
(If I do this Q&A I will read out patron usernames so let me know if you'd like to remain anonymous)

Thanks!

Explaining this meme with existentialist philosophy

New short-form video! Covers Sartre's view of the gaze of the Other in Being and Nothingness. Hope you find this interesting and educational even if it's shorter than my typical video. I'll definitely make more videos of this length if you like it!

I attached the script to the post.
I also uploaded Sartre's Being and Nothingness, one of THE most influential existentialist texts, to our Google Drive:

Update on upcoming video

Finishing the video on left-wing terrorism took a REALLY long time, and it led me to decide to start uploading short-form content as well (say, 3-6 minutes long). I'll still be making the long videos, of course, but creating shorter videos in addition would allow me to cover concepts that I otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity for, and to give people more frequent uploads while they wait for the big videos. The short video I'm working on right now is on Jean-Paul Sartre and the horror of b...

Hauntology, Lost Futures and 80s Nostalgia (VHS Format)

I recently got a CRT TV with an in-built VHS player, both to be able to watch VHS tapes and to be able to record them. While thinking of potential ways to use this technology I realized it would be extremely appropriate to re-release my video on hauntology in VHS format, making it doubly hauntological. Not only is it aesthetically and thematically appropriate, it's also an encouragement for everyone to watch this video 6 years after its original release, and to consider how much of it is stil...

Some documentaries to watch on urban guerrillas

In Love with Terror (2002) - Documentary about the German Red Army Faction by the BBC. Has a lot of uncensored violent imagery. Decent introduction to the topic with some interviews, t...
