Working on the script about left-wing terrorism

I'm currently 14 pages into the script for my next video on left-wing terrorism, and I'm making good progress. I'd say I'm at least 3/4 done.

Writing it has been extremely difficult because there is simply so much to cover, and I have delayed finishing the script for such a long time because it has felt so overwhelming. I've never done research for a video before that spans such a wide area.

I am mentioning:
- Early left-wing terrorism
- The development of anti-colonial gu...

Soviet memorabilia

I recently bought these Soviet items that I have a lot of appreciation for.

My relation to Soviet memorabilia is very ambiguous. I don’t believe that the Soviet Union was ever socialist in the strict sense of the word, and I don’t think it was even a dictatorship of the proletariat for most of its existence. And the most widely available Soviet memorabilia is from the 50s-80s anyway, during which the revolutionary potential of the USSR was at its lowest, as it grew increasingly more...

What should the next video topic be?

Hi, everyone! I am back from another depressive episode and the script for my Top 10 Books Read in 2023 video is almost finished, so it should be coming out either this week or the next.

While I'm working on that, we can start voting on what my next video should be about. Multiple choices are allowed! Let me know if you have any additional video topic ideas!

1) This would be a more historical video, like my German Revolution series. Nowadays, domestic terrorism tends t...

The Proletariat and the Problem of Unproductive Labor

The video is out!!!

Looking at classical Marxist theory to find out what a proletarian is, and what distinguishes productive and unproductive labor to clear up some commonly held misconceptions. I hope you'll find it helpful!

Video script is attached to the post.

Thank you!

New video on its way

Almost done editing my new video on the proletariat and productive labor, so it should be coming out today or at least tomorrow, stay tuned!

As an aside, I wanted to say that the updated Patreon interface sucks, and is way more inconvenient to use. Not sure why they felt like ruining it. Hope it didn't get much worse for supporters. Either way, thank you!

My writings on Baudrillard's 'Utopia Deferred'

My next video will be on the topic of the proletariat and productive labor. Until then I thought I'd share something with you.

At the beginning of the year, I read Utopia Deferred, a collection of texts by Baudrillard from 1967-78 (pre-Simulacra & Simulation Baudrillard), and while reading it I occasionally wrote notes. I'm sharing them in case you're interested in seeing...

What should my next video be?

Since we’ve gotten a lot of new patrons since my last video (welcome everybody!), I’ve decided to post a new poll to see what people are interested in the most, along with 2 new video ideas. Multiple choice is allowed!

1) This would be a more historical video, like my German Revolution series. Nowadays, domestic terrorism tends to come from the political right, but here I’d like to talk about a period of time in the late 60s and 70s in which left-wing domestic terrorism was commo...

Footage from a Soviet Ghost Town

This is footage I found that I had filmed many years ago that I thought my patrons might find interesting, even if I'm not the best cameraman. This is a town called Pyramiden, in what is now Norway, which used to be a Soviet coal mining settlement that became abandoned in the 90s because of lack of funds. It's complete with its own living quarters, school, sports and cultural center, and cafeteria for common dining, all of which has been quite well-preserved due to the cold weather. Today, th...

A Heideggerian Analysis of Ghibli Studio's Films

I've spent the past couple of days recovering my old project on Heidegger and Ghibli movies and re-editing it to attempt bypassing copyright block again, and I'm happy to announce it worked! This is a video that I'm quite proud of and I'm happy it can reach a wider audience now.

A Complete Timeline of the German Revolution

I realized that I had never uploaded my timeline of events for Part 2 of my video series on the German revolution, so to make it more convenient for you, I decided to put the events from all 3 parts into a single timeline, making it, as far as I'm aware, the most comprehensive timeline of the German revolution in English. I hope you will find it helpful!

Recent readings

Bought a couple of new books while away from home:

Minima Moralia by Theodor Adorno
One of philosophy's most beloved grumpy depressed old men. In this book, Adorno, in the form of aphorisms, writes what he calls a "dismal science" as a reversal of Nietzsche's gay science. Adorno was a depressed man who despised his surroundings, and was ashamed of having to live in them, and it shows. Although a lot of his theoretical starting points are Marxist, he does not have mu...

I attached the supplementary notes to this post, but you can also find them in our Google Drive, where you can also find PDFs of the various texts mentioned in the video:

Update on upcoming videos

Finished writing the script on Joker and the Dark Knight. I ended up talking about class, mental health, social isolation, as well as alienation, particularly in the work of Erich Fromm, and also a little bit about the significance of riots in our "age of riots" as Alain Badiou called it.

At the same time, I wrote a good deal of the script on urban guerrillas, though it's hard to say how soon I'll finish it because there's so much to potentially cover. I'll keep you updated.

Working on new scripts

Since the two winning topics in the last poll were 1) an analysis of Joker/The Dark Knight, and 2) a video on 70s left-wing terrorism, I'm currently trying to develop both scripts at the same time. I'm thinking that, since my last video was a historical one, I'll try to come out with the Joker/Dark Knight video first, so as to produce more classic movie analysis type content before doing another historical video.

I know some people weren't interested in me covering The Dark Knight and ...

What should the next video topic be!? (RE-POLL)

(SORRY, forgot to turn on multiple choice on the last post. Please vote again! I'll take into account the results on the previous poll too though)

Time for a new poll! This time I’m allowing multiple choices, so feel free to pick several options. I’d like to see where the general interest lies.

1) This would be an analysis of the way class functions in two completely opposing ways in The Dark Knight (2008) vs. Joker (2019), with The Dark Knight coming from a ruling class per...

1) This would be an analysis of the way class functions in two completely opposing ways in The Dark Knight (2008) vs. Joker (2019), with The Dark Knight coming from a ruling class perspective that tries to mask class conflict in moral terms, whereas the Joker movie is more conscious of class, subverting The Dark Knight, and presents th...

The "Spartacist Uprising" and the Death of Rosa and Karl

It took longer than 24 hours to export, but it's finally here – part 3 of my series on the German revolution (just in time between the anniversary of Hitler killing himself, and labor day). I would say that I hope you'll enjoy it, but it's a very depressing video, so I at least hope that you find it informative and enlightening. I'm always happy to hear feedback, so let me know what you think of it.

Movie upload: Trotz alledem! (1972)

I'm currently halfway through editing my 3rd video on the German revolution, and this is a movie you can occupy yourself with while waiting. It's an East German movie that I've used a lot of clips from for my German revolution videos. Since it's quite obscure and hard to find, I thought I'd do my patrons a favor and upload it on our Google drive. English subtitles are hardcoded in.

The movie centers on Karl Liebknecht's role in the German revolution, covering the November revolution, B...

Movie recommendation: Ikiru (1952)

Ikiru (“To Live”) is a 1952 Japanese movie directed by Akira Kurosawa. I don’t know to what extent it’s a conscious influence, but I once saw it listed as a Heideggerian movie, specifically one that tackles Heidegger’s notion of being-unto-death (or being-toward-death), which posits that authenticity can only be attained with a genuine acknowledgment of one’s mortality.

The movie’s protagonist, Watanabe, is an unrepentant bureaucrat - a particularly good example of Heidegg...

Update on the German Revolution

Currently finishing up the script for part III of the German Revolution series, and will start recording the audio soon. I decided that for now I'll keep it a trilogy, ending with the January uprising and the death of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. There's a lot more to cover - the Bavarian Council Republic, the March action, the Kapp Putsch, the Ruhr uprising, etc. - and I might cover these topics too later on. Alternatively, I might talk about them on a livestream. It all depends on ho...
