Killing Margaret Thatcher in Doom

Defying everyone's expectations by actually coming out with a new video before the month ends.

This one is inspired by Dr. Doom Daddy's Doom II mod and concerns Margaret Thatcher, neoliberalism, Post-Fordism, and video games. There's no shortage of YouTube content about neoliberalism, but it's often discussed quite vaguely, so I thought I would focus on concrete policies enacted by Thatcher to make the label more concrete. This video is therefore less philosophical than most of my video...

On Discord

Some people have pointed out that the link to the Discord server doesn't work. Here's one that should work: https://discord.gg/3QJdDeTz2t
Let me know if it does!

We used to have a Discord bot that automatically adds patrons to the server, but that was removed because it didn't work very well, and often added people who didn't want to be there. That's why now you can only join it by link or invite.

Thank you...

An excerpt from my book

Good news! Repeater Books allowed me to share an early, exclusive excerpt from my book on here as a thank you to my patrons. This is the introduction. If you read it, please let me know your thoughts/impressions, even if in a single word. I'm extremely excited and interested in your reactions! Thank you.

Quick new video idea

Last month a free mod for Doom II called Thatcher's Techbase came out, which involves Margaret Thatcher coming back to life with your goal being to kill her... So naturally I played it. While playing it I realized I could easily use it as a jumping off point for a discussion of topics like neoliberalism and atomization, so that's what I'm planning to make a video on next.

This possibly won't be as philosophically dense as some of my other videos, but it could be a fun video that wouldn...

On my book

Me and the marketing team at Repeater Books are currently considering giving certain Patreon tiers of mine a discount for the book and possibly doing autographed cards. We're also considering giving certain patrons early access to an excerpt of the book.

Because of this, my patrons might want to hold off pre-ordering the book until we find out if Repeater Books will let us do the discount. In any case, here are some links where the book is available for pre-order:

Supplementary notes to "Berserk as a Nietzschean Tragedy"

Just finished writing the notes for the new video. If you found the video interesting, please check it out, as I cover more of Schopenhauer's aesthetics and Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy, and introduce a couple of related concepts that I didn't mention in the video. If you come to read it, please let me know what you think.

I attached the notes on this post, but you can also find it on the Jonas Čeika Google Drive folder, where I also uploaded books related to this video, name...

Video is on its way!

Today and yesterday I had 6-hour long recording sessions for my audiobook, and after today's session I finally finished editing my Berserk video, which is being exported now. As soon as it's exported, I'll upload it to YouTube, so we're very close!

Update on Berserk video

The script for my upcoming video on Berserk is fully written. It's almost twice as long as my Heidegger & Miyazaki script, so the video will probably be over an hour long – pretty fair after such a long absence.

I'm currently in the process of recording the audio, which is taking a while. I got a new mixer this week so my audio quality is now better than ever, but there's a lot of mouth sounds getting picked up which are driving me crazy. If anyone has any advice for getting rid ...

(Good) update

The past two months I have been working on a video script about Berserk and Nietzsche, and I am very happy to announce that it is almost done. Working on it has been extremely difficult not just for personal reasons but because there are so many potential topics to explore in Berserk, and I want to do it justice.

My audio mixer is broken, but my new one should be arriving tomorrow and I'll record the script audio on the same day. I will then get right to editing, which means the video w...

Update

Hi again! I'm sorry about the long absences, I decided I should be more open about this: writing a book has been a really task, more stressful than I had imagined. I got really burnt out and it led to a period of depression and severe lack of motivation, which is why I've been absent a lot - avoidance is my main coping mechanism. After a needed break from the internet in general I feel much better. Hopefully I can get my next video done soon - seeing how people respond to my videos is definit...

Time to pick the next video topic!

Since I'm still working on my book, and I don't want you to have to wait too long for a new video, I came up with a few video topics that I'm already somewhat read up on, so that I wouldn't need to do an overwhelming amount of research, and make my next video more quickly.

The options:

1) Here I would point out some problems with certain common-sense or liberal views of freedom, and discuss a couple of different philosophers' definitions of freedom. I’d probably intro...

Sharing two of my essays

To make up for my infrequent uploading, I decided I'd share something I've written in the past with you. These are two of my essays, written a couple of years apart, both for university. They're probably more dryly academic than a lot of my videos, but they shouldn't be too difficult to read. They are largely introductory so they might be of most use to those not yet familiar with the relevant ideas.

The first, older one, is about Georges Bataille and how he suggests a model of Nietzsc...

Update, my 10 favorite books of 2020

Because I've been away from home, I haven't had a chance to record the audio for my next video (about my 10 favorite books I read in 2020). Sorry about that.
I attached the video script for the video on this post, so that my patrons can see what I have to say about the books before the video comes out.
On our Google Drive, I uploaded every book from the list (with the exception of the ones by Jonas Mekas and Nancy S. Love which I couldn't find online copies of). So you've got easy acces...

I jump from topic to topic more than usual in this one. I touch on Fredric Jameson, Jean Baudrillard, Mark Fisher, and some others. Hope you enjoy!

Notes for my video on Philipp Mainländer

I'm still working on my Simpsons video, but meanwhile, I finally wrote the incredibly delayed reading notes for the video 'Philipp Mainländer - The Life-Rejecting Socialist'. I wrote a bit about the other German pessimists of the time, and listed some other philosophical pessimists that people might be interested in. I hope it helps to whoever's interested, and let me know if you have any questions!

Update

Although I have finished my thesis, I have extended my book deadline to the end of this month, which is why I've still been absent. I'm trying to finish the manuscript for the last week of this month, and then the editing & publication process will start.

The Simpsons video would take a good deal of research, but I don't wanna make you wait that much longer, so after finishing the manuscript, I'll first make a video that won't require me to do a lot of additional research. I'm thin...

Firstly, the last poll made it clear that my next video will be on The Simpsons. Unfortunately, I won't be able to work on this video until October. My recording microphone breaking is one reason why but not the main one. The main reason is that I have to finish writing BOTH my book for Repeater Books AND my thesis for university by the end of September. As I'm sure you understand, this period is extremely stressful for me, and I have to limit my workload. If there's anything I can do for you...

What should the next video be about?

I'll write the reading notes for the previous two videos when I have time, but I'll make a new poll now so I know what to work on in advance. Here are the options:

1) The Simpsons in its early days had a lot of social commentary, sometimes quite radical. In fact, the entire set-up of the show was socially critical. Over time, the show degenerated into meaningless pop culture references and icons, and completely lost its critical character. I would look at this development through Frede...

I thought I should make a quick update given the delayed video release. Everything except the video editing is done. I'm putting in the extra time and effort to make the video look nice. Once it's done, I'll put out reading notes for it, as well as the older video on Marx and the state. Thank you for your patience!
