Exploding 1000 Times Until A Game Is Made

So, Rainshade. Maybe you've heard of it.

To be completely transparent: development has gotten progressively slower after I was hired to work on a certain other game, and TRAGICALLY, after Unity's funny little stunt, it came to a complete stop. It… hasn't really moved since, even after their policy was reversed. I tried again and again to get that momentum going again, but it wouldn't budge.

After a disastrous December, I finally accepted that the pressure from public awareness a...

OHHHH BOY. (Unity)

It's been an incredibly hectic few weeks, and right in the middle of it, Unity, the great beast whose breath gives Rainshade life, announced some changes. These announcements traveled far and wide, and after a bit of a delay, it is time we joined hands with the others and sang, "what <...

Rainshade: Smooth Moves

Immediately after my previous post, I held discussions with a couple members of the team about what steps to take next, now that I was in the right place to focus more on Rainshade again, and we all came to the same conclusions:

  • Rainshade was in dire need of updated documentation. The game had evolved and expanded enough that everything was out of date, and it made it difficult to work on without direct assignments from me, especially since I'm also busy with a 2023-07-01 06:28:07 +0000 UTC View Post

Deizhang - Yama Lù Mura

山・鹿・村

Village theme for Deizhang! Once again done by the lovely gameboy advance-owning Wheelable

Will that be the track name in the ost? I don't know! I just think it sounds cool! But in the files it's "skyguy_2.mp3."

Maximizing your build as an ADHD main

Do you remember my last post? About the mysterious disappearance of the legendary herb "Adderall" from my local apothecary? To my surprise, not only was I lucky enough to get a refill, but I've been switched to a different, two dose version that's treating me a lot better. The downtime between doses allows me to continue the brainstorming and self-care I began while on the wrong medication, before the second dose returns me to a focused s...

STATUS UPDATE — Medicine, Builds, and Rabbits

ALRIGHT.

I don't like talking about personal issues or world events on here, but sometimes exceptions need to be made. For example, but did you know there's an ongoing nation-wide shortage of adderall right now? Well you'll never believe what medicine I take. And ran out of.

If you're as scatterbrained as I've been for nearly two weeks now and/or don't wanna read this there's a nice bullet pointed list of all the important parts below. I also made it bigger in case you are readi...

When You Block Too Much It Push You Over :(

Alright gamers we're gonna talk about game feel some more

Continuing on from the previous post, another problem rainshade encountered arose from the ability to block: specifically, with the inability to attack freely, there was very little incentive put the umbrella away until there was an opening or unblockable attack, which caused a lot of difficult with designing attacks.

The first sol...

The situation: I wanted to put up a post going in depth about the trials of rainshade and the history of gameplay iteration it has gone through in the last couple months alone, to achieve a pair of goals that, over time, seemed more and more mutually exclusive -- to make a game with a intuitive, simple controls and few buttons, that also could deliver the high risk high reward satisfaction found primarily in character action games, also known as "feeling cool" -- and how it u...

Daylights (Dawnlin) (again)

The theme for the seaside town of Dawnlin has gone through several iterations as we figured out exactly what sort of vibe it should have. Exciting? Tranquil? Boats?

After quite a bit of back and forth, we move to focus on what made Dawnlin stand out from other towns; a mix of comfort and unfamiliarity, waking up in a friend's hometown for the first time. Wheel did an amazing job evoking that feeling and ALSO IT'S HIS BIRTHDAY! HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEEN

Hoyak, Merlot and Cerise

As mentioned in a previous post, I've been very focused lately reworking choices "made unthinkingly, out of fear of losing support," or other reasons. One of the most difficult to approach has been Merlot, Cerise, and their adoptive father Hoyak.

Let's start with Hoyak, because he's the most simple. He used to be a funny lantern man, a golem of sorts, which wasn't all that out of place in Rains...

An Update • Life, Rain, and Game Development

I don't think I need to tell anyone that the output has been pretty sparse for a couple months! There's a reason for that, and — gonna be honest — I didn't want to discuss it publicly. But, seeing how many of you have been continuing to support me and cheer me on, I wanted to speak up. Larger text posts are my least engaged, but I'd be grateful if you read it. Unless you already trust me in which case, thank you! You're excused. Enjoy your weekend~!

No update this month!

As mentioned on the Patreon Discord, there will be no update this month! Outside of dev work, things have been extremely chaotic this month, with both very good and very bad personal developments, rounded out with a really nasty housing situation (I'm not in any danger, but it's taking all my time!). What new content has been worked on has to be kept secret for a bit longer. Thank you for understanding!

Rainshade — Builds and Progress!!

General progress update: Ray's been busy reworking the player controller, collisions, and making builds functional ! And with proper builds, that means fullscreen borders and app icons! WOO

(This feature not final)

With less time needed to spend coding, I've had more time to focus on writing, planning and designing, which has been a very welcome change. I hope you're all looking forward t...

Rainshade: Expanding the Team

[Wow, that's a lot of text! Here's the short version: DebugDrawRay is joining the team part time as programmer in order to save me from myself. We're currently restructuring everything to make the rest of development smooth as possible]

3 years ago, I announced a project with the working title "Once More." it was intended to be a very different game. It was meant to be a small little project that I could finish in ...

Rainshade — ???????????

Big news! The team has expanded, if only by a little bit! I worked myself to the point of exhaustion this last week between two major projects, so for my own sanity, I'm taking the weekend off before announcing it. More info to come on Monday, so here's ??? something??? to sate you in the meantime

IM SICKY.......

SMALL DELAY with the upcoming post, because I got real messed up this week, and I need to conserve my energy for more urgent matters. Most of what'll be in the update has already been posted in the patreon discord, but a proper post will take a bit longer. Sorry!!!

The flick move

Or is it the "fling" move? I'm not sure! I've been finding picking up and throwing objects kinda broke the flow of battles and limited what objects could be thrown, while the inability to put things down limited the use of these objects in puzzles. So, I separated them. Flick allows certain objects or phenomena, like electricity, to cling to the umbrella, and be used as a single-use projectile. It may not seem like much, but man I'm really excited to set your umbrella on fire so yo...

WORKIN ON DAWNLIN while I can, as other work has me pretty occupied, and it'll probably be that way for a couple months. Also got occupied with SICK (not Covid) and boy lemme tell ya. Wasn't pog

The big breakthrough that happened this month is right there at the top: Until recently, any and all cutscene-specific sprites for the player wouldn't work without disabling customization, due to how the player's sprites are stored, and in the case above, preventing the palette swapping from app...

Rainshade: Hey check this out (tile tools)

I feel like I keep making posts about this curséd tile system, so I spend half of this month tearing down the old system entirely, and replacing it with a much more streamlined system.

While tiles are divided into "floor" and "wall" tiles like before, but a lot of the depth stuff was handled automatically. This produced a metric ton of edge cases, with tiles rendering in the wrong order, lower enough for the player to clip over it, collider problems... I'd need to stop and make new wor...

Advanced Tech — Dodge

SUMMARY OF THE POST BELOW: There's a dodge move now. It's executed by pressing sprint while you close your umbrella. It is not needed to complete the game's story and but it feels very good to do

Instead of doing one big (late) post, I've decided to small ones for a bit, every one or two weeks. Expect two, but maybe there'll be a surprise.

Rainshade's combat is all about reading patterns, parrying, and countering, but time and time again I found myself wanting to ...

Music Preview — The Junkyard

HAPPY HALLOWEEN??! The last month has been pretty hectic, and most of my focus has been working on patches for a certain other game. I do have some Rainshade concept art and footage to show — some of which has already been shared in the Patreon Discord, but it's not all quite ready yet! A-and I'm gonna be away from my computer for a couple days, so it's gonna be later this week!! In the meantime, here's a music preview for one of the game's first major dungeon-like areas, Dawnlin's...

Rainshade — A second glimpse under the hood (August 2021)

After many, many conflicts caused by Rainshade's rendering system, I had to overhaul the entire thing. Originally using a strange technique involving weirdly prioritizing sort order, it now makes sprites act as pseudo-3D objects, almost like a half-closed pop-up book, and then renders them in 2D.

I really can't understate what a game-changer this is. Building environments was a massive hassle, and now it's like building with [iconic studded plastic building bricks], so I've spent my fre...
