May 2021 Progress

HEY
UH

DON'T HAVE MUCH TO SHARE THIS MONTH

Not that we haven't been busy!! Here's the rundown:

  • I've been very frustrated with the how slow RS has been going, so I've added a new member to the team to act as consultant, and very quickly I've learned how much I needed someone to smack me on the wrist and keep me on task.
  • Subsequently, a lot of what was worked on this month is stuff I can't share yet. Some of it will be in the demo, some won't. If I C...

April 2021 Progress

Did a lot!! A lot I can't show because some of the placeholder art is borrowed from another game and I don't wanna go to GAMER JAIL so you'll have to wait until it doesn't! have that!!

As a LOT of code clean-up to prepare for any potential new programmers, and some balance work. Very excited for what's in store...

Rainshade • February 2021

(Click on the images for more information!)

Hey guess who forgot February ends abruptly. OOPS

Not shown: I had to spend a week completely repairing the dialogue system, after discovering one of the plugins was horribly outdated and updating it, which introduced a bunch of needed changes and almost as many conflicts!! It's all solved now, mercifully.

I'm keeping the updates a bit more succinct from now on, because most folks don't read the huge text dumps and I don't like wri...

January.

As mentioned previously, I'm continuing to be a bit quieter about Rainshade's progress, so I can prioritize different aspects of development better. Sometimes the best way to spend a month is almost entirely back-end work and planning, and conjuring up more concept art and visuals just for the patreon can actually slow development down.

That said, THIS MONTH WAS. SOMETHING. A lot of good! A bit of bad. And unfortunately, I have even less Rainshade work to show than I expected. It was a ...

The Animation Roadblock

This is a really hard thing to explain so bare with me here ok?? ok?? tha nks

When I started working on Rainshade, it was a much simpler, smaller game, with very basic mechanics. The character customization system I had set up was rather easy to implement, because the player was only meant to have a handful of animations. With parrying, throwing, pushing, and all sorts of other things being added, things quickly grew out of hand, and the player's sprite sheet became absolutely massive.<...

Rainshade • November 2020 Progress Report

November was BUSY, and a lot of it was spent catching up with various projects following my surgery in October.

Here's a brief rundown on November's work (you can also click the images above to see captions explaining em'!)

  • More work on the character creator. A major problem that make cutscene-specific sprites a pain to implement got resolved
  • Speaking of unique sprite pains, NPCs now have an automated animation system, so I don't have to manually arrange their walki...

Slight delay on November progress report

And not for a lack of progress, thankfully! 99% of the assets and code required are ready, but I am simply incredibly exhausted and don't have the energy to assemble a nice coherent post about it. It'll be another day or so until it's up, though if you're in the Discord, you may have seen what's in store already.

Here's a little peek, though! Lira's sprites have a bit more progress, and were done by 2020-12-01 07:19:51 +0000 UTC View Post

Rainshade • October 2020 Progress Report

HAPPY HALLOW'S WEEN!

As expected, surgery did a real number on my dev output, but I'm glad to say I'm recovering smoothly, and it's been quite an experience. Did you know it's not uncommon to have massive black eyes and blood vessel popping in your eyes if you get surgery in any part of your face? I didn't, and thank god I was attended by someone who pointed that out before I noticed I that going on!

In any event, while I was out of commission for those two weeks, I had a lot of t...

The Verla Problem

There's really no other way to put this — Rainshade, or as it was named at the time, Once More, was announced too early. Perhaps almost a year too early, but with Puro being put aside to work on it, I couldn't exactly go completely silent for like 8 months. The scope of the project (primarily in terms of length) grew. Characters changed, the story changed, roles changed. Even the umbrella, which the game is now essentially named after, was only added to solve a core gameplay issue about 7 m...

Rainshade • September 2020 Progress Report

September was a ROUGH ONE. My computer died and had to have the majority of its parts replaced with new ones, and shortly afterwards, my city got blanketed with a thick smoke for about a week, which made it pretty hard to get anything done. Wasn't exactly ideal!

Despite that, some good work got done. A number of rendering bugs were fixed and streamlined, I completely reworked how bosses were animated (see above), I've been implementing a couple new dialogue related features (see below),...

August 2020 Progress Report

[Captions have been added to all the above images. Click on em to learn MORE]

This was a busy month! It was also not a very exciting month! That is to say, a lot got done, but I have less than I'd like to show for it.

With the wretched tile bug DESTROYED (see last post), much of this month was spent reorganizing, planning, and preparing to move forward, potentially as a small team (things...

The Other End

Something I'd like to do after completing Rainshade is take the systems/framework I created for it, and reuse them for a smaller project or two.  Though most ideas are fleeting, there's one I've been thinking about an awful lot lately:

A human living on a strange island, you are struck with an unknown, incredibly painful curse in the middle of the night. With your remaining humanity rapidly dwindling and the very air in your home lethal to your emerging new form, you are forc...

Rainshade ☂️ July 2020 Progress Report

Though I've been busy with ~other stuff~, Rainshade had some big strides this month!

First, let's talk about YOU, buster.

Here's a semi final look of all the player bases with all the eye options (using the colors the palette swapper uses)! The way these were rendered was redone, which reduces my workload and made it easier to implement and tweak other core functions, such as the pl...

Technical Difficulties!

I have two more posts ready to go, but Patreon is having some CLOUDFLARE ISSUES, so I'm unable to put the posts together or upload images, so there's a chance I'll be unable to post them until tomorrow. It'll be a miracle if even THIS post goes up, but it's worth a shot!

Suspending July pledges

So with a bit of deliberation, I have decided I will be pausing patron pledges for July.

I've been very, very busy with work unrelated to the patreon (I didn't even have time to make a proper announcement image!), and seeing as I'm currently financially stable, I see no reason to charge folks for a month without any new content.

Rest assured, Rainshade is not on hold. I'm using my free time to plan, experiment with, and restructure an awful lot about the game —...

Regarding COVID-19 and your support

Gonna be a bit real here: with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there's a lot of disruption and uncertainty in the air, so let's cover a few bases quickly.

Seeing as I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home, development for Rainshade and related Patreon updates will continue until further notice (what else am I gonna do locked up in my own house????). I am extremely grateful, if not a little surprised, by the support I continue to receive during this trying time, though if yo...

Rainshade — Character Creation Progress

I've been super busy this month, and a surprising majority of that was actually involving Rainshade!

Aside from prep and planning involving COVID-19, I've been working hard on building and implementing Rainshade's character creator, and all the sprites required for it. While still unfinished, the entire system that allows your choices to combine into a single sprite sheet without killing me in the process is complete — despite the player having over 256 poses and counting, ev...
