First pass at Pantone 2022 (poll below)

Just exploring ideas, I'm not particularly in love with any of these. Pantone's Color of the Year 2022 is Very Peri and I decided to use the periwinkle flower as my inspo. I actually like this year's color for once so I wanted to honor it with an elegant dress, but it's hard to come up with ...

More thumbnails: Sailor Princesses again, vtuber designs

With a few changes to Mercury and Mars I think this series is pretty much good to go. Mars is admittedly a little hard to make out here - I replaced the fire-shaped detail with ruffled fabric. It's a similar silhouette to last week's, but a little less campy to fit her character better*. I'm not sold on the flame gradient in the middle - was debating a monochrome pink to match her original dress bet...

Sailor Senshi Princesses (as of now)

Still working on these thumbnails, but here's where I'm at right now! This week most of my gamedev work was scriptwriting, so to ensure I accomplished some sort of drawing this week I finally some progress on this series. Would really love some thoughts on these!

I mainly focused on the inner senshi this week, aside from Jupiter since her design is pretty much final.

New laptop and lots of new project art!

I'm back and I can finally draw again!

My original laptop was a Microsoft Surface Book 2. I love that it allowed me to draw directly on the screen with a stylus, making it much more portable, but as time went on I realized that I did not choose a strong enough graphics processor for my laptop. Most of my games would lag terribly, and Clip Studio Paint would lag too and even crash. Still, it lasted me a good 3 years. RIP

I was considering getting another Surface Book with a s...

August project update + poll

Overhauling the art for Sugarplum Cafe! I intended to procrastinate on finalizing the art style until closer to release, knowing how much I was gonna redo the art regardless, but I realize how much good art matters to people when talking about the game and I'd like to announce the game soon. So even if this isn't the final art, at least it's nicer art than before!

Iris, Goddess of Rainbows

Some goddess-inspired fashion for an upcoming collab with all the winners of Ms. Paint's Art Race. If this is your first time hearing about it, you didn't see anything!!

This was loosely based on a design I did 5 years ago, shown below for reference. I really thought I did something with this...

Attempting to papercraft, part 2

This week I wrapped up my experiment in papercraft/paper cutting from last week. Read part 1 here!

I was pretty intimidated by the idea of cutting out the lineart, but thankfully I had learned enough tips from experimenting on scrap paper last week. It's not perfect, but it looks aight from a distance and we take those.

Attempting to papercraft, part 1

I'm actually not quite sure what this craft is called - papercraft, paper cutting, paper theatre - but I've long been fascinated by the art of layering paper and adding dimension to flat artwork. I decided to finally try it out while I'm on social media "hiatus", starting with a small one-off project to see if I like it!

I mocked up a gift for my boyfriend, a portrait of his favorite VTuber Nekomata Okayu. I don't really gift him art so it was about time, and plus it's a low stakes enou...

New SM fanart and exploring new crafts

Sorry for not posting last week, writing this post ended up taking more time than I thought. But the stained glass piece won the poll, so I finally thumbnailed it!

I'm drawing this with the aim of turning it into art prints. I want the backgrounds to be glittery so that's why the backgrounds are a little plain, but also I'm trying not to design unique backgrounds for each girl. I don't think the amount of effort is worth the little time ppl would pay attention to it.

Senshi Princesses, Empress of Light thumbnails

While I was waiting for last week's poll results (don't think there's an expiration date, you should fill it out if you haven't yet!), I decided to do some thumbnailing this week. I'm kind of enjoying writing these as text posts with photos interspersed rather than photo posts with a big text essay at the bottom. If you have a preference between the two formats let me know :)

What to draw next?

Help me pick what to draw next for the Sailor Moon artbook! I'm incredibly indecisive and trying to choose between these options has been a struggle.

Option 1: Redraw

The fastest option would probably be redrawing this:

This was my rendition of an official Sailor Moon illustration below. Although I want my artbook to have a fashion focus, I've really...

Sailor Moon Selkie Dress

Selkie is a clothing brand that recently went viral for their puff dresses. I couldn't stop thinking about how a Sailor Moon-themed Selkie dress would look so good, and since they probably can't do it because of copyright I decided to draw it out myself ~

I love that the dress looks good on almost any body type, although I personally wouldn't buy it because I think it would make my shoulders look too big...

Princess Serenity dresses + project updates

This is going to be a much more candid post compared to my previous art posts, but I just wanted to talk about a bunch of stuff!

First things first, here's all three Princess Serenity dresses together! Of course I want to add more to this collection, but I think this is a solid place to take a break for now.

This style was really fun to draw in; I still don't think this is going to be a ...

Moon Princess 3

The third look in my Princess Serenity dress collection! Based on her dress from the first Sailor Moon musicals starring Anza Ooyama.

Unlike other versions of the dress, this one is gold-tinged rather than white. The original is admittedly gaudy and costumey (in line with the rest of the musical costumes), but I always thought the wires circling her bodice were an interesting interpretation of the signature circles. I just gave the wires a more celestial theming.
As you can see...

"Draw your mutuals" challenge

I asked for Twitter mutuals to volunteer for this challenge in February and it is now June...😰

Originally I was going to color each one, and there are some previous posts where I did color a couple, but I stopped having fun with this challenge and I think they look better as black and white lineart.

If you're on here, I'm terribly sorry about the wait!

Moon Princess 2

The second look in my Princess Serenity collection, a series of dresses inspired by Sailor Moon's princess form. Here's the first one!

This was loosely inspired by the version of Serenity's dress from the Dracula musicals (yes, there were Dracula musicals, don't worry about it). I was especially enthralled with the ruffled collar and wanted to build on the layers of frills, but I think in ...

Prototype Sailors

The completed Prototype Sailors series! Some cute fashion inspired by the prototype designs for the Sailor Scouts :)

The original designs are...not the most wearable, to put it nicely. So I hope I made them a little more chic and cohesive.

I plan to share these designs as individual posts too, I'm still working on the backdrop for those but will post here once they're ready!

Moon Princess

One of the Princess Serenity dresses from the last post! Lineless because it was too hard to capture translucent white gowns with regular lineart lmao
I believe this is my first lineless digital art! (I've attempted lineless traditionally before, years ago)

I'm not switching my style to lineless permanently, but I do think this artbook is a good opportunity for me to explore some different art styles. Lineless was an interesting exploration - I feel that it's easier for lineless art ...

Moonlight Cookie + Princess Serenity thumbnails

Also some general updates below!

1: Not Sailor Moon, but Cookie Run fashion. A series of gowns inspired by Moonlight Cookie and her many costumes - you can tell from her designs why she's one of my favorite characters in the game. This won't be in the artbook (it's not Sailor Moon obviously), but I've been wanting to do Cookie Run fanart for a while!

2: Added two more gowns to the Princess Serenity series - the three gowns outlined in black are very grand so I wanted some sleeker ...

Citrine (commission)

Finished this commission I posted a few weeks ago! The client requested their OC, Citrine, who I think is a superhero of sorts? The design is entirely theirs, which I mentioned earlier was a nice change of pace from racking my brain coming up with new designs. I tried to make it still feel like my style with the hair + the fancy astral circle. Super fun to draw honestly!

Prototype Sailors WIP

Remember I drew some cute fashion inspired by the prototype designs for the Sailor Scouts a while back? I finally got around to it again.

The lineart and the flats are done, I just have to add shading. I made a quick mockup to get an idea of what the final shading could look like, which you can see on the final image of the set.

This isn't as high fashion as my usual designs, nor is it meant to be a redesign of the originals. I suppose they are just cute wearable outfits ins...

Sailor Aiden

Sailor Scout portrait for a new $20 patron, Aiden! (they/them)
They will join Sailor Mack on my updated Twitter banner and IG stories starting this month ~

By the way, I apologize for not having a project update for Sugarplum Cafe last month. I'm alternating between Sugarplum and the Sailor Moon artbook as my main project, and for most of March the artbook was my main project which meant I wasn't working on Sugarplum. You can see my Sailor Moon designs in progress via my past posts!&...

Moon Princess thumbnails

A series of dresses inspired by Princess Serenity (Sailor Moon's princess form) - the most famous is the dress on the right but I also wanted to pay homage to a couple of really interesting variations from the musicals!

When I make designs inspired by gowns and long dresses, I feel an immense pressure to go big in order to capture the elegance of the original dress. My problem with this is that I don't want to send the message that more is always better. So I'm a little conflicted in my...

Venus x Burberry

Mockups for the Sailor Scouts x Fashion Brands idea I had months ago, where I draw each Sailor Scout in a different print inspired by a famous fashion designer. I always wanted to put Venus in the Burberry plaid and give her a Cher from Clueless moment, so I sketched her for fun.

Left is an outfit inspired by the original sailor suit, and right is a school uniform that shows more of the pattern. (I actually drew the right first and then modified it into the left, so the left is slightly...

Commission WIP

I believe she's a superhero OC named Citrine? It's a really nice change of pace to draw other people's characters without having to design new outfits. It's nice not having to rack my brain for new design ideas, haha. I hope I can receive more commissions like this in the future!

Definitely open to color critique on this.

Monthly update for my game, Sugarplum Cafe!

Based on feedback from my December prototype, I want to make the world of Sugarplum Cafe feel more immersive, without making this game too ambitious. I spent this month implementing quite a few changes, and I think the game looks really different now!

continuing my art style crisis from the last post 🤣
first two are Miss Vanilla and Vanilla Madeline from my game Sugarplum Cafe;
last two are continuing the mutual profile pics challenge from the last post.

as you can see, i toyed with thinner lines than usual but in the end i do think the thicker lines feel more me. it's true that the thinner lines allow for more detail, but sometimes i have more simplistic designs like the Vanilla Madeline and in those cases thin lines just...

Which lineart?

I started working on a "draw your mutuals' profile pics" challenge going around on Twitter and wanted to take a stab at thinner lineart. But I'm not sure if I like these new lines, even though I can get more detail in with the hair. Do you like the thicker lines in my old work or these new thinner lines more?

As part of the next version of Sugarplum Cafe, I'm drawing full body sprites for the characters and adding some new ones too!

The incredibly rough short bios in my head for each of the characters:

  • Vanilla - will walk you through the tutorial, lolita/maid-inspired fashion

Gothic Scouts?

Update: Fixed typo in last paragraph, internet died before I could fix :')

This is one of my second passes at the Celestial Sailors collection I designed in 2020, shown in the second pic. I wasn't happy with the old designs because the rainbow gradients were cool in theory but to me looked tacky in a group. I think I was trying too hard to combine too many aesthetics, so I'm going to try focusing on each aesthetic separately. Will help pad out the artbook too, hehe...
