Part 2 in the series is a new drawing and we are examining the same subject from a different angle. This helps to bring to life the 3D reality of the head.
Materials: graphite (4h-4b), white chalk (.9mm from sewline) on Stonehenge paper that is stretched over a 1.5 inch deep cradled panel. The paper has been toned with ink before starting the drawing. Model image os from the Travis folder.

This is a re-release of an older tutorial that I took off of the site when it was getting too cluttered. Now that I have organised the new navigation page I thought it was the right time to put it back up.

Have you ever found yourself a bit frustrated with Patreon's old school blog-scroll style navigation? I know that I have. Well, those days are officially over! There are 2 ways you can navigate my lessons and find all of them in order:
1st is to use the "Collections" page found on the Patreon home screen. See the image in this post to see how that works.
The second i...

In Part 2 we will be finishing the block in process. That means figuring out how to observe & paint a background.
In addition to that I will introduce my preference for keeping the design and freshness of the painting accessible from one layer to the next.
And, really, so many other things!

Hello Everyone- it starts here! Or... well, it continues here! So I am sure all of you remember the drawing I made of this same pose and model. We are going to continue with that project all the way into color!!! I am aware that I am way too excited about this, but that's how I feel 🤷♂️
This is Part 1 of 5 parts. This month I will release parts 1 through 3. Next month we will have parts 4-5- these are so packed with info and commentary, they take quite a while for me to ...

Brilliant 19th century portrait painter- Bertha Wegmann. In this episode I talk about her techniques while examining a few excellent portraits.

Very soon I have a new episode of WWLA (What We Love About...) coming out about Bertha Wegmann. I thought I would take the opportunity to post here some of the hi-res images that I tracked down for use in the video. They are all pretty easy to find via google/wiki. In most cases I only had to click down a couple of pages to get to the full size jpg.
If you all like posts like these I can continue to post them along with my video series. What do you think?

The list could go on and on, but in this video I talk about his use of color in fleshtones, anatomical knowledge, and technique- and also debuck some of the criticisms he comes in for.

Hello Again!
So, more interesting stuff happening here. 1st, I have made the adjustments to the "tag" system here and I hope that it has made posts more accessible for you all.
There is a new tier in the works... Cornelia and I are developing lesson plans for what we are calling "The Curriculum Tier." It is a solution for students who want a clear linear trajectory in their learning. There will be monthly le...

So, this is the next in a series of videos that I am making about subjects that can fill in the space around my tutorials. By this I mean that, for art students, a sense of context about great representational artwork is helpful when acquiring both artistic tastes and skills. Today it’s Aldof Menzel- technically an academic later in his career though that’s not necessarily where he started.

This is the 1st part of a livestream workshop I did with some of my Mentorship+ Tier subscribers, I hope you all like it. It was a really interactive experience and we had a great time making it. As I get better at making/broadcasting these workshops I hope to expand the participation to all of my subscribers.
Would you like to take part in more "live," classes like this one?

Further insights and conversation in answer to subscriber Phil Bennett's question about spending time with Bargue drawings.
I am 99% sure that this is the last part of the Bargue series- maybe there's a little bit more...
Notes/corrections:
Some updates- The actual sculpture is from the Helenistic era, not Classical. Also- Michaelangelo was not in hand for the unearthing of the Belvedere Torso but rather for the Laocoon.

By the way, I am looking for a name for this "show." Is it a Vlog? Either way, I think that it needs a title, any suggestions?

This is the 1st of 3 videos on this topic. Patreon Subscriber Phil Bennett asks:

This is the 1st tutorial in a new series that I am starting out called "The Features Of The Head."
This ongoing series goes in depth on the individual features- eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and eventually the planes of the head. It is the beginning of my Patreon content having a structure that will facilitate a student's progress from basics to advanced concepts. Distilling the things that I learned in my 4 years at the Florence Academy and all that I learned teaching there for the last 12 ...
