I've got no idea how I didn't post this earlier! My wife and colleague, Cornelia Hernes, sat down and drilled deep on flesh tones. Specifically flesh tones in oil paint. Hope you find it informative and enjoyable.

In this video I have taken all of the portions of the tutorial where I am only drawing, not talking, and sped them up 5500x. This means that the entire video is about 30 minutes rather than 3.5 hours. In this way I hope to make the information in these tutorials more accessible.

So, it is not easy at all choosing between the top five or ten entries in the portraiture contests that I run here on Patreon. For that reason these Honorable Mentions are super important. I wanted to recognize the quality and sentiment in these next five drawings.

Something you all should know about drawing and painting competitions- it takes a lot for you to put yourself out there. For me it is an honor to be able to assess and compare your entries. Thank you for taking this step and putting your work out there into the world!

I am painting on a piece of linen mounted onto an archival hardboard panel. I am drawing with graphite at first and then, at the end, heightening that block in with raw umber and flake white.

Color is ALL about relationships. This portrait by John Singer Sargent is full to the brim with color diversity. In the original image on the left we can see those relationships expressed in their original positions. The image on the right contains the exact same values, only all of the color is tinted towards the cooler (blue) end side of the spectrum. Both images work well and have a naturalistic feeling due to the range of the color expressed in them. If we use good values and express a fu...

So many of you submitted your work for this competition (almost 100 entries!) and I am truly blown away by how hard you all are worked on your entries. More than anything else this convinces me the value of creating this competition- This will certainly be the first of many.
Eventually though, I had to choose one portrait to win the compe...
