I crashed through the underbrush after the blue-purple cat-girl, and I stole a glance over my shoulder at the floating black cloak that chased after us. It was about thirty feet behind me, but it was quickly gaining ground. I didn’t see any legs, so I wasn’t sure how it was even moving at all, but its lack of limbs didn’t seem to slow it down any.
“What the fuck is that thing?” I panted as I ran behind Una as fast as I could.
The cat-girl’s blue-purple tail flicked rap...

I had to be tripping balls or have completely lost my mind at some point, but there I was in the middle of a weird forest talking to a cat-girl named Una. She’d just called me the Dreamer, and while it was unsettling to consider the implications of such a title, I couldn’t argue with its accuracy. Still, I didn’t remember ever asking to be some special dreamer, and I decided it was time to wake up.
I slapped myself across the face in an effort to rouse myself, but nothing happened...

This is an Alice in Wonderland spoof, but I'm concerned a lot of you don't like the name. Here are some other options.

I searched the ground, and the dog-monster was the only thing I could find, but its body had made a dent in the dirt like an asteroid hitting earth. Debris was scattered everywhere, and giant rocks were dislodged all around the monster’s body. I examined it a little more closely, and I ignored the sharp smell of death surrounding it as I rolled it over with my branch-sized finger.
Black spots covered the creature’s gray fur, and its shoulders were massive. It was like the entire tor...

Strange visions of smiling cats flashed before my mind’s eye, but they disappeared into a swirling multi-colored vortex, and I surrendered to the floating sensation overpowering my body. I floated without direction through time and space, but those concepts were meaningless at the same time.
At long last, or maybe after no time at all, I came to a stop.
The world continued to move around me, but I’d lost touch with my body long ago, or maybe a few moments prior. Numbness preva...

I followed the trails of vampire and demon blood through my darkened manor, and it appeared as if the majority of the fight had occurred on the stairs and in the kitchen.
“Ashe?” I called out as I stared at the bloody staircase, but she didn’t answer.
The more my fury overtook me, the more the Infernal flames in my palms continued to grow. It had spread from my hands all the way to my wrists now, and it started to singe the material of my jacket, but I didn’t give a shit.<...

“I wouldn’t fear the Blessed too much, Sveila,” I told the witch. “There’s no way in hell I’d let them--”
“Those men don’t hesitate to attack any undesirables at the slightest provocation,” the Red Witch insisted. “Especially a witch. If they feel like someone from the Church is under attack, especially given how fond the Bishop is of this priest, more than a dozen would likely come to his aid. Maybe more.”
“A dozen, huh?” I grinned at the memory of the...

“Your meetings with the priest are still going well, I suppose?” I asked my middleman as I shuffled through the papers that littered my desk.
Bennet had come to the manor today to discuss a few jobs he had coming up this week, but after my conversation with Ashe the night before, I thought it wise to double check that everything was going well with the priest. Although the incubi would be fools to come after us themselves, there was nothing stopping them from taking the easy way out...

As soon as I had the energy to move, Ashe and I hauled ourselves back toward the manor. A few curious faces peered at us as we walked passed, but we paid them no attention. We were going to be the talk of the village for a while, but I didn’t feel like handling the tempers of the residents tonight.
Even though a fight of that level excited us, it angered me that the Lord Captains were prepared to send a demon of that strength after us in the middle of a place this populated. They were...

The beings that had been in the marketplace scattered in all directions, but there weren’t as many piercing screams as I expected. The residents of the
Grimmway swiftly shut themselves up in their stone houses, wagons, and shops, and I heard the frenzied fluttering of fairy wings in the treetops while the rain continued to drip down from the boughs.
In under a dozen seconds, it was only the three of us demons and five Hellhounds out in the lanes, and everything seemed to stand sti...

After I’d finished with the imps, I travelled back toward the manor, but the same thoughts continued to swarm around my head. The entire mining operation was incredible, and I still couldn’t quite understand how everything worked. I knew the magical orbs had a part to play in it, but the vanishing shack, the shimmering door handle, and the moving of the great wall was more than I’d ever imagined.
I was also fascinated by the beasts that roamed the forests on the opposite side of t...

“So, what happened with the witch last night?” Ashe asked as she tore off a chunk of cheese with her teeth.
“Sveila,” I said automatically.
“Excuse me?” my huntress frowned.
“Sveila,” I repeated. “That’s her name, although she isn’t fond of giving it out to people.”
“Oh, Sveila, then.” Ashe shrugged.
We hadn’t had the opportunity to discuss my trip to Pixie Lane last night because when I returned, Gyor had just arrived with some more...

I briefly stopped off at the manor before I headed to Pixie Lane. The Red Witch worked for the bastard priest, and she was often sent to collect payments from various undesirables. If I wanted the chance to talk to her, without the fear of the priest or his guards finding out, then I’d need to stop her from doing her job in order to give us the chance to talk. It would have been far too suspicious if she arrived back at the priest’s estate without the correct amount of pieces in her sack,...

The early morning sun filled the room as it pulled me from my sleep. The same adrenaline from last night continued to pulse through my body, and the images of the dead vampires constantly ran through my mind. It angered me that they had tried to steal the orbs, and kill the imps, but the excitement of slaying the bloodsuckers overpowered the sense of anger.
Ashe let out a soft moan as she stretched her body underneath the silk covers, and then her pink eyes fluttered open.
“Good...

My glowing, violet eyes glanced around the square room and took in everything before me. The cracked, oak walls, the red velvet curtains, and the lone hook that once held a painting of the dark elf who used to own this manor house.
Now, everything in it was mine.
It had been two weeks since the battle with the dark elves, and my demon huntress and I had made this manor house our home, but we hadn’t replaced the various paintings we’d taken down with new ones just yet. I had pl...

I started to unscramble Nara from the ivy, but the pesky plants were ruthless. They tangled in her hair and twisted all the way down to the tips of her shoes, and it was hard to see the Headmistress within the chaos of the foliage. I took my sword and started to swipe at the vines that continued to stretch over from the front of the estate to reach her, but this was only mildly effective.
Mazne stood behind me with a small smile on her face. She was far too short to reach the witch who ...

The siren and the Ember Priestess sat on the edge of the bed, and both pairs of eyes ping-ponged back and forth as they watched me pace around the ivy-covered room.
“Ephy, we need to know exactly what happened to you after my last visit to the pond,” I said and clutched the end of my chin with my fingers.
“Yes, we do,” Cinis agreed. “We’ve been so worried about you. Especially Dex. You should have seen him, Ephy.”
The siren tried to smile, but I could tell from...

The early morning sun filtered through the orangery window and pooled around the Ember Priestess who lay sleeping beside me. The sheet was barely covering her naked body, except for a small corner that she had scrunched and nuzzled under her chin.
I had been in such a rush lately that it was nice to have nothing to do apart from listen to the birds outside the window chirping their morning tunes. Everything was still and hushed before the chaos of the day began, and I enjoyed every mome...

I had a picture cast in my mind of what the young duke would look like based on the king’s attitude toward him, and to my suprise, I was almost completely correct.
This man was fair-skinned and tall, and he had a toned body, a jawline that was perfectly chiseled, and angular features that gave the impression he might be of good breeding. He wore a stern scowl on his fair face, but even I could see that he considered himself a handsome man, and as with most rich and handsome dukes, thi...

I rifled through past ledgers and found any documentation I could regarding cases that may have connections to the king and his royal court. Some files just contained the names of the people who had been murdered, like Lord Emory, while others contained the history of any uproars that had come from the community.
I was mostly looking for anything that might backup the king’s claim that Master Abbot had accepted multiple cases from him in the past.
There was nothing in particular...

Nara stood up from her seat and stormed toward the door. It was the exit she was probably hoping to do earlier, but at least now, she had an excuse to pull it off.
“This isn’t over,” the Headmistress said in a very non-threatening tone. “I will convince you to take on this job. I will!”
“Bring money and proof, and then I’ll be pretty convinced,” I called out to her.
Nara grunted loudly just to show me how pissed she was, and before I knew it, she had disappea...
