Fun with medical surplus
A short video about the fun that can be had with an old ultrasound printer.
Hope your June is going swimmingly.
Keep on keeping on.

While we’re all familiar with the Philips Compact Cassette and many of us are aware of their smaller dictation focused Mini Cassette - I’d like to introduce you to a lesser known member of their cassette family from the 1960s - Philips Flippin’ Massive Cassette.
Getting hold of one of the tapes was one thing - getting a machine to play it took way more effort than I could have i...

You may remember seeing the original Columbia GP3 record player in one of my previous videos. This is a Japanese record player that you can’t keep down. It’s back and this time it’s not terrible.
Since we only had a chat the other day, I’ve nothing new to add today, but I trust you’re all keeping well. Take care.

I couldn’t wait to show you these - a fascinating little piece of history, brand new in box…well they were until I opened them.
When I next get the chance I’ll do a Patreon catch-up video. I’ll include a word or two about the behind the scenes disruption that might result in a few shorter videos popping up in the feed.
I’d prefer to leave that for now…because today I...

This isn’t the video I intended to bring you this week, but unfortunately a family emergency took me away from home. If you have a desire to know more - there’s a paragraph in the YouTube video description. But rather than dwell on that here, I just hope you enjoy this replacement video offering instead.
The difficult circumstances surrounding making this might even have worked a ...

This video is a companion piece to the Mini HiFi one from the other week and it temporarily draws a line under this area.
I do hope to return to the subject in the future though to look at a couple of classic systems from the 1980s.
That's quite some way off though, I’ve plenty of other things I want to get to first. In particular, I’m really looking forward to s...

I wanted to share it with you to see if I’m the only one who is affected by it in this way.
Whilst I have have much respect for Cambridge Audio and their equipment…...

This was the question posed by Taras here on Patreon. After looking/laughing at the shoddily translated advert and button labels I was sufficiently intrigued/amused to pick one up. Now we can all find out what a ‘Tore Sanchi’ slider adjusts.
The next proper video might be a few days later than usual, but hopefully this provides a brief distraction in the meantime.

Here’s the short video about the globe I mentioned in the update.
There’s not much to add that isn’t said in the video - it is what it is.
I aim to have something more interesting and substantial to show you next time.
Keep smiling.

Mini HiFi, I’ve wanted to talk about these for a while and I have some older classic examples to show in the future. It’s a segment of home audio that I’m quite enthusiastic about as it combines two of my interests, miniaturisation and HiFi.
Mini HiFi was a category usually overlooked by HiFi magazines and websites. They preferred to focus on the higher end equipment and separat...

A look at a rather unusual vintage cassette deck from Philips. I’ve wanted to demonstrate one of these for quite some years now.
The only videos on YouTube featuring this device in action have been shot with an out of focus potato. I thought it would be nice to finally do it justice.
This is a long video as it’s split between a repair and demonstration. I di...

I shot this review immediately before the video you saw last week but I held this one back because I wanted to release the far more positive clock demo video instead.
I felt like there’d been an unfortunate run of underwhelming tech recently and there’s only so much of that anyone can stomach.
This week though I’ve found myself bogged down by a repair - and so far ha...

Today I’m looking at a customisable clock. A clock with a face that could be an actual face or anything else you prefer. All will be explained in the video. Here’s the link https://youtu.be/ygjonCPPcGM
In other news. I’m working on my positivity at the moment. I think a year stuck inside the house has taken a toll. So there will be no more rants about seemingly unnecessary car features - just upbeatery (that’s ...

Over the last couple of months I accumulated a few music donations, so it seemed a sensible idea to open them together in one video.
While not all the music featured is something I’d choose to listen to, exposure in a video like this really can help these independent artists and small companies get noticed. I’ve received some lovely letters in the past from people after their music or product was featured and gave them a much needed boost. So the purpose of this video is really to...
It’s time for an update. It’s a long one. It might be an idea to listen to it in instalments across a few days whenever you’ve run out of more interesting things to do.
There are sections about my brief Radio appearance, a camera software demo, a couple of things I’ve seen on the internet, the last of the confusing comments, annoying car cliches and finally a ‘pick of the month’ that has been around since 1884.
This is just the audio version, the main video version is ...

After the cassette history video last week I needed to do something a bit easier and you can’t get much simpler than a review of a mug. But this isn’t just any mug - it’s a connected mug.
It’s a lightweight video, but if everything works out I aim to have another one along in a few days to make up for it.
Hope you’re all keeping well.

You may have seen me mention that I’d prepared some notes about the history of the Philips Compact Cassette for my brief radio appearance the other week and then I’d decided to use these notes as the basis of a video. This is that video.

I’m very happy to have finally finished this one. It's taken me longer to make than most videos, approximately five years.
It’s an unusual tale with a bit of a mystery, a bit of history and a bit of a demo. Way more niche than a review of a dishwasher, but far more personal too. I know it won't attract a wide audience, or even appeal to all the usual viewers but it's a tale I wanted to tell.
It’s the February 2021 update (Audio edition) - the video version is available in a separate post.

There are a few distinct sections so I’ve added chapters to enable easier navigation. Some bits are a bit long winded so if you get bored I’d recommend jumping to the next section... where it gets even worse.
