Chapter 2 pre-release info

Today I officially finished the 3d posing & rendering phase for chapter 2 and thought I'd write a quick update.

Below you'll find some data about the new chapter. The numbers are still flexible, but I think won't change much after editing is finished. Since I haven't edited anything yet and therefore haven't done a playtest, the playtime of 2:45 - 3 hours is more of a rough estimate on my part based on render- and wordcount.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #7

This week I finished labels 1, 9, and 13. Label 1 brought my GPU to its knees for the first time since switching to it due to a slight fog effect I used. As unpleasant and annoying as the technical part of this label was, visually it is one of my favorite scenes.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #6

This week I finished labels 4 and 11 (these fucking labels are getting bigger and bigger). I started label 9, but had to pause it like label 13 due to a lack of available assets for a reasonable price. These finally went on discount on Wednesday (78% cheaper, nice) and can probably be completed over the course of next week.

In terms of the amount of renders, chapter 2 is now bigger than chapter 1 with currently 1887 renders. All missing labels are big ones, so I expect something between...

Chapter 2 - Progress update #5

This week I finally finished Label 14. Together with the setup from Label 13, it's a bit over 400 static renders and 2600 animation renders. That makes it by far my biggest scene up to this point.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #4

This week I continued with the labels 13 and 14. 13 is basically finished. I'm still waiting for 1 asset that I'm missing to go into discount, as it's a bit too expensive now, then I can run the last missing renders. I think I'll be able to finish label 14 next week. The end is still missing for that one, after all the animations have been played. Also missing is 1 position with 2 animations and 6 camera angles.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #3

This week I finished label 5 and 6 and started with label 13. After this and the following one, number 14, are completed, I should be able to give the first rough estimates regarding the release.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #2

Let's start the new year with a confession. I may have lied a little when I said that I limited myself to 1 hour in the evening during my vacation. It was probably more like 2-3 hours. After writing the dialogues for chapter 2, I was in the flow and had fun continuing. So, sue me.

As you can see from the graphic, a bit more than 1/3 of the chapter is already rendered. What's also easy to notice, I think, is the label that contains the spicy parts of this chapter.

Chapter 2 - Progress update #1

I hope everyone is having enjoyable Christmas days and is ready to start the new year on a good note.

I have myself to blame, but I couldn't stop working on the game completely. I limited it to one hour in the evening tho.

Result of that, the first draft of the dialogues for chapter 2 is finished. 16500 words, a similar amount to chapter 1, but unlike chapter 1 I think chapter 2 will grow a bit as some events may feel too short and I've left myself room to expand them if necessary...

Chapter 1 - Release dates

I'm done.

I will do some more play tests this week to be 100% sure that there are no big fuck ups in the game.

The new release plan looks as follows:

Chapter 1 - Progress update #8

This week I finished the last big label from the main story. Since I had some idle time again, I finished editing and worked a bit on music and sound effects.

As soon as the renders for the remaining animations of the bonus scene are done, I will put the scene together and finish it up next week. Then the 3D work will be done for this chapter.

2 of the 4 animations for the second part of the bonus scene are done. Same as last month I have attached them so you can see how much the quality has changed. Compared to the previous animations, I have increased the quality by 1.5x. So they now have 50% of the quality of the static renders. For the main story I will try to increase this to 100% if this doesn't push the render times 10 years into the future. Chapter 1 - Progress update #7

This week I finished one of the last big labels and two bridging scenes. Because I can't render these on my old system, I had a lot of idle time. I took advantage of this and started editing at the same time. I actually got quite far, which shows how much idle time I really had. I pretty much edited each label besides the 2 labels that have not yet been rendered.

Chapter 1 - Progress update #6

This week I finished all the scenes with Hailey and Sarah. Now only the ones with Lisa and 1 bridging scene are missing and then the main story will be finished. I deliberately postponed these scenes to the end because my GPU is already afraid of the VRAM requirements for the selected sets. This is the last hurdle for me in chapter 1, after that it's just a matter of putting everything together and having a bit of fun with the bonus scene.

Chapter 1 - Progress update #2

As I had a bit more time today, I was finally able to get back to the 3D work. A welcome change after a week of only looking at white pages.

I also thought about the best way to communicate progress and took Ren'Py as an example.

In Ren'Py, game sections are divided into labels and I will use the same in my communication as the main method. I have attached a simple graphic for this.

Chapter 1 - Progress update #1

Today I finished the first version of the dialogs for chapter 1. I ended up with just under 17000 words (roughly 67 pages). To put that into perspective, the prologue had about 9300 words and 1003 renders excluding the bonus scene.

The prologue took about 1.5 months to complete.

The word count will shrink a bit while I edit it further, but based on what I have now, I think the first chapter will be about 1.5 times as big as the prologue if I keep the same render to word ratio.
