Vestigial Plant Ecology & Homeless Camps

In San Antonio, Texas we inspect a relict plant community that offers us a glimpse into what the Flora of San Antonio may have looked like 150 years ago. the only reason that this plant community still survives is due to the steep Limestone cliff it grows on and the fact that it is sandwiched between to on ramps and a freeway.

Because of its out-of-the-way & undevelop-able nature, the native plants are allowed to thrive and the cities disenfranchised populace is allowed to ...

Desert Ferns Podcast, Ad-Free

This is a science-heavy podcast with a ton of fascinating info in it. We talk about the "Cheilanthoid ferns" as a case study for a number of interesting phenomena like convergent evolution, why selfing is beneficial in a desert if you're a fern, how the hell a fern grows in the desert to begin with, how spores can last for a century or more, how gametophytes can live for years in some cases, what the hell is a gametophyte anyway, etc......

PDF copy of some old writing

Attached is a PDF copy of some writing I did about a decade ago. Looking back it comes off as somewhat corny for me to read but maybe you'll get something out of it. Some of the railroad stories are reminders of pleasant memories to me as its' been long enough for me to forget them.

In other news, we're moving forward with a purchase on some land (making an offer but not sure if it's going to go through) in conjunction with morningstar conservancy, the non-profit that w...

"Ecology of Plants" by Gurevitch is a must-have

This textbook is now in my curriculum arsenal. I've emailed with the authors and hope to have them on the podcast when I am done with my first book. IT's currently 180 bucks (yes, insane) on Amazon for the third and most recent edition, but it can also be downloaded for free (and then read on a tablet) on www.libgen.is which is a venue I recommend for most books as buying these textbooks at cost doesn't even benefit the authors much, mostly just the publishers. I purchased Ecology of Plants a...
