Milk & Cheese "AI/FU" Commission

One of five in a bundle of commissions I'm working on, this is a recreation of an index card drawing done last year. Still needs to be colored.

This and the other recreations will be available as downloadable b&w prints for the $10 backer tier.

Beasts of Burden In Comic Shops Today + Interview At BiffBamPop

The BEASTS OF BURDEN OMNIBUS is out in comic shops today.

I did an interview with Andy Burns at the BiffBamPop site about the Omnibus and the series. You can find it at the useless-on-IG-link below, or I guess just type in BifBamPop and you'll find it pretty easy.

Beasts of Burden Omnibus Hits This Week

I'm a little confused about the timeline because the ship date on the Omnibus is listed as today, but today's not New Comic Book Day (NCBD). And some folks who pre-ordered the Omnibus started getting theirs in the past day or so. So let's just say the book is officially out today, and roughly out this week depending on where you are and how you're getting it. Thanks to those of you who preordered it or are planning to pick it up at your local comic shop (LCS) this week. It's appreciated, and ...

Interviewed By A Student

I agreed to do an interview by an illustration student for a school project, and thought it might be of interest to some folks here. I bashed this out because the student needed it back quickly, and I'm spinning a lot of plates right now. So, it's not exactly beautiful prose, but hopefully the ideas come through and make some sort of sense. I hope the student foesn't get an "F" because of me.

Update -- February 11th, 2025

Working on commissions. One finished in a sketchbook, as seen above.

If all goes well, I'm doing two merchandise illustrations in the near future.

It's been over 10 months, but some of you might recall that I was asked to pitch some stories to a comics publisher. Well, I finally heard back from them after a much longer stretch of time than usual, long enough that when I read the e-mail I honestly couldn't remember the story pitch that they accepted. I am hoping we can work out t...

Welcome To Eltingville Storyboards (Act 1, pgs 15-23a)

More Welcome to Eltingville storyboards by Stephen DeStefano.

Nothing much to say about this stretch, other than, dialog-wise, I would not have Pete or Lord Atrocity say the word "midgety" in a script in this manner. Times change, the world hopefully evolves, and sane people learn things and make different choices in their creative work. It (arguably) sounds funny in the sentence, Pete's response is (arguably) funny, but you can always find other words that are not harmful and still ge...

The F.A.Q.

I'm answering a lot more questions from folks these days -- mostly about the Eltingville Club comics and pilot -- and a lot of the same questions keep cropping up. So I'm hoping this FAQ can help me save some time and still answer the questions I'm getting from fans. I'm going to make this an open post that I can direct people to. I'll edit/add to the post if needed. Okay? Okay.

Q: Do you ever do conventions?

A: I used to, but I to...

Pro Tip

If you find writing solicitation copy difficult, as I do, try writing it at 8:30 in the morning before going to bed. Fatigue can go a long way to overcome anxiety, baish doubt and defeat feelings of worthlessness. It might not be great copy, but you won't care!

Also helps if you're getting old enough to where things just don't matter as much. I got my Social Security statement yesterday informing me that my "retirement" benefits -- if I should so choose -- can begin in roughly two year...

Welcome To Eltingville Storyboards (Act 1, pgs 1-14a)

I'm finally beginning to scan the Act 1 storyboard. I figure I'll try to scan a batch for each post that makes for a cohesive chunk that isn't an overwhelming amount to click through at any one time. Maybe around 10-15 pages at a time, depending on how things break. We'll see how it works out. There's a lot to go through so I'll try to do one of these a week until it's all scanned in and posted.

About the Act 1 scans -- I was responsible for the storyboard, but I didn't feel qualified ...

Hey

If you follow me on social media, you probably read about my taking a spill recently down. Yeah, another one, although it's been a while, longtime readers might remember my previous hits, including "Concrete Steps Hurt Like Hell", "Socks Are Slippery On the Stairs" and perhaps even that golden oldie, "Down The Stairs With My Baby (Cradled in My Arms)". Cripes. Anyway, this latest smash is entitled "All Tossed in The Supermarket (I Can No Longer Shop Happily)"

Eltingville Club Live Action Short From Chile

Came home from a pain management appointment and found this posted to me on Bluesky. It's a short fan-made video adapting the "Bread and Suck-Asses" Eltingville Club, made by some young folks in Chile. That some readers would want to do this, let alone actually spend time making it, just knocks me out. This and my trigger point shots made this a much better day than I was expecting. Super cool.

Here's the Youtube link to the video:

The new issue of Where Monsters Lie hits shelves today for New Comic Book Day, and features a variant cover by Sarah Dyer and I.

The original line art for this cover (with the rough layout) is available for sale on my 1970's fanzine ad-like Art For Sale List.

I'll never have a real website that I can upload art images to, it's never going to happen...

WIP: Finished Inks

Needs the title and word balloons lettered, and some text for below the bottom line. I'll be doing those on separate pieces of board asap. The circle around Milk & Cheese will be done digitally by Sarah. I'll ink in the circle and the word balloons when/if I try to sell the cover.

Anyway, it's almost done. Spent way too much time on it. As usual.

Here's the inks with the levels adjusted to pop:

Old Drawing (2011)

Done as a favor for someone's kid.

I overdid it.

The head doesn't match the body stylistically, it reminds me of those old plush animals that had plastic heads and were a little creepy. Hopefully the kid never noticed. They probably threw it out years ago.

That Time I Almost Wrote a Popeye Vs. Mars Attacks Comic

(Originally posted to my Tumblr, then on my LiveJournal, now here on the Patreon, with some slight editing and an addendum)

Weird day in a freelancer’s life: A little while back I got a call from IDW about a project that I didn’t think I’d have any ideas for, let alone any desire to write — Popeye Vs Mars Attacks (!@$&!!???).

Now, okay, I love Segar’s Popeye like nobody’s business, and the Mars Attacks cards are crazy fun, but, c’mon, WTF, right? ‘Ja ...

Mad #524 Illustration: Breaking Bad

Done for the Fundalini section of issue #524 (Dec, 2013), pen and ink, brush pen, Pitt pens, Pentel correction pen on 8" by 11" Bristol. Online reference for the TV image was my first actual exposure to Breaking Bad. I still haven't seen an episode. MAD was good for me, always making me draw things I normally wouldn't, doing likenesses, etc. It kept me from being too lazy.

I think I managed a pretty good likeness of whoever the main character is (I honestly can't remember the characte...

M&C Commission Inks 12-5-24 (WIP)

Colors up next on this one.

Almost done with the cover I've been posting progress shots of. have to work on the logo and I can send it over to Sarah.

Set up some new Fun Strips for the Patreon. Will nose them along.

Still have several old/late as hell commissions to finish.

Then I can finally get back to the Beasts of Burden scripts.

Sort of a plan.

Cartoonist Goes to Hell Line Art

Someone asked me about buying the original art for the "Cartoonist Goes To Hell" back cover from Dork. I told them it wasn't for sale because it's not a complete page, there's only the title and the first panel along with two figures. I wouldn't know how to price it, and I have the dumb idea that I'd like to trace off the first panel and recreate the other panels.

I have a lot of originals -- full pages and Fun Strips -- that are missing elements. I don't work digitally but in some ca...
