December Poll Winners

We got two clean wins this month! That hasn't happened in a while. We did get a tie for second place in the Toygenic category, so I'll have to roll a tie breaker to see who gets into the Redemption Poll in March, but we will deal with that later.

Another advantage to having clear front runners this times is that I was able to get a bit of an early start sketching out ideas, and I'm already pretty excited with what I've come up with so far. I even have a few ideas for fun bonus sketches,...

Sleeping Giant

Just a little concept sketch of a thing I might like to do some day. Still a long, long ways off, but it felt good to finally put the idea on paper as it were. I'm sure the specific designs will change over time, but I think I managed to capture the general mood/atmosphere I had in mind.

She-Ra

At last, we've come to the end of my Grand Rapids Comic Con sketches. This was another non-commission. It was the back half of Sunday and things were beginning to wind down, but I still felt like drawing, so I decided to look out in a random direction and draw the character of the first cosplayer I saw, which happened to be, you guessed it, She-Ra. Now, the cosplayer was actually a(n adorable) little kid, but I decided I wanted to go in on a more amazonian, warrior-woman style; one that reall...

Nov. Secret Stash Poll Winner: Ako!

Choujin Sentai Jetman is a fantastic Sentai Series in general. It's commonly regarded as the "season that saved Sentai" due to its hitting big after a number of seasons with declining ratings. It's also often pointed to as a great season to start on for new comers. This is my own theory, but I think it has a certain X-Men quality to it, at least in terms of characters. Red Hawk is totally a Cyclops, White Swan...

Nov. Poll Winner: Doctor Doom

I love Doom just for how freakin' melodramatic he is. The way I see it, he comes in one of two modes, silent brooding or Shatner-level scene chewing. So when he won, I had two ideas of how I wanted to draw him: slumped in a massive throne, glowering at the world, or going ham and shouting to the heavens. Obviously I went with the second, mostly because it just seemed like it would be fun to draw, but I think I'd like to revisit the other version some day as well.

December Sketch Suggestions (Secret Stash)

Spinning off of the regular sketch theme but with a slightly more narrow focus, the Secret Stash theme for December is going to be Video Game Girls. When I worked at the toy store, the electronics/video game department was my area of expertise, and Christmas was easily one of the busiest times of year with a ton of new releases aiming to find a place beneath the tree. And between classic princesses in need of rescuing to the more modern bad-ass action girls, the genre is rife...

December Sketch Suggestions

It's the Holiday Season, and this time of year it's really easy to get caught up in trivial things like charity, togetherness, and family. I think it's important that we all remember the real reason for the season: Getting awesome gifts and supporting our capitalist masters! That's why the theme for December is Toygenic!

Seriously, a lot of our geek culture is basically a big toy commercial. It was particularly true in the late 80's through the 90's, but even today, not...

CHANGE LEOPARDON!

My half of an art trade with the incredible Will Jones (https://willjonesart.tumblr.com/). It's Spider-man! Specifically the 1978 Japanese version made by Toei that introduced giant robots to the Super Sentai series and, by extension, Power Rangers. Yeah, Will definitely had me figured out when he requested this one!

Rey and Luke

There's kind of a funny story behind his one. It's another sketch from Grand Rapids Comic Con and it was kind of a commissions, but also kinda not. See, on Saturday, this dude came up to me and started talking to me about my commissions. Asked about my prices, how long it usually took me. All the usual stuff. He even told me what he wanted, a sketch of Rey and old Luke Skywalker. Awesome. Finally, he says he'll come back the next day to commission me. That seemed a bit odd to me. Like, why no...

Inosuke

Grand Rapids Comic Con turned out to be a pretty sketch-heavy show, and it all kicked of with this sketch of Inosuke from Demon Slayer. I haven't watched that series yet, but I've been aware of it since watching a video* discussing this very character on YouTube; and like "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood" and "Death Note" before it, drawing a character from it has left me really excited to check it out.

* Tried to include a link to the video, but Patreon's screen keeps go...

Uraraka

Leading up to Grand Rapids Comic Con, I decided I wanted to do another marker sketch example piece. I'd also been seeing a LOT of My Hero Academia cosplay at most of the other shows I'd done this year, so it seemed like a good idea to do something from that. (Not that you had to twist my arm, of course. I love MHA and I've been wanting to draw more stuff from it.) And so, here's Uravity herself, Ochaco Uraka.

I'm fairly happy with how this one came out, particularly the line art. I migh...

November Poll Winners

This was another harrowing one! Doom and Forrester were tied for some time, but Doom ultimately triumphed. (I gotta say, though, I love the idea of those two particular characters facing off. Like, I'd read that comic.) The (not so) Secret Stash poll ended up being a FOUR WAY TIE! Funnily enough, I expected Kimberly to be a total spoiler, but she ended up being the only one to not get any votes. Anyway, I rolled dice to determine their ranking and Ako from Chougin Sentai Jetman narrowly beat ...

Arya Stark print?

I'm about to put in my print order for my last convention of the year, and I'm debating on if I should include my Arya Stark image from the September poll. Considering how poorly received the final season of Game of Thrones was, I'm not sure how many people would be interested in buying it. So, what do you think? (Keep in mind, this has nothing to do with if my art is good or not - I swear I'm not fi...

November Secret Stash Poll: Super Sexy Sentai

Probably one of the more self-indulgent polls I've done on here, but I don't care. lol This is an idea I've had for a little while and I finally decided to go for it. Speaking of nerdy details only I will appreciate, to make things extra interesting, rather than just filling this thing up with Pink Rangers and calling it a day, I thought I'd try to select characters representing all of the basic colo...

November Sketch Suggestions

Hey, everybody! November is soon upon us, so it's time to start thinking about what I'll be drawing next month. November 1st will also be the one year anniversary of my big hospital stay that changed my life, so I thought I'd celebrate that by making the theme Doctors! The more I've thought about it, the more I've realized the abundance of cool doctor characters in pop culture, and I want to hear your favorites!

Get your ideas in soon; voting begins on Friday!

October Poll Winners

Sorry I'm a little late acknowledging the poll. As some of you already know or may have been able to figure out from my Facebook post, I had an interview for a new day job last Friday. That went well and I got the gig, but I've been in kinda super anxious mode ever since, questioning, like, if I'm making the right decision and dreading having to tell my boss at the car lot on Monday. I know it'll all work out in the end, but man oh man are my nerves dialed up to eleven right now.

But, a...

Kona-tober? Octo-Guardians? Um...

Okay, so I had seriously considered doing Inktober, the yearly challenge to draw something every day for the entire month of October. I had it all planned out. Apparently there was a similar challenge last month called Tokutember where you draw Tokusatsu stuff every day for a month, but the official prompts were REALLY Kamen Rider heavy with, like, practically no Sentai/Ranger stuff, which is obviously what I was ...

September Poll Winner: Arya Stark

Ah, Game of Thrones. It breaks my heart the way you ended, and not in the way I think you meant for it to. I actually had a bit of an existential moment while working on this, realizing I was putting a lot of work into recreating a scene that, well, I didn't hate the scene itself, I guess, but the anti-climatic ending that it kind of represents. I chose it because, despite the steaming dump it took on the whole Long Night plotline, it's still a pretty dynamic moment and I had a strong image i...
