How to carefully open the lumbar spine

Pelvic translation techniques can help with both posture and edema. Everyone has a pelvic translation that they develop in there youth. It is worsened from either sitting or standing the wrong way for years. Check with your chiropractor which way your pelvis translates, tilts, or rotates so they can help you balance it and reduce the tension pulling at the lumbar spine!

I’m nowhere near perfect…

I get asked all the time if I’ve ever had plastic surgery. Nope! I’ve NEVER had anything done unless wisdom teeth and some minor gum revision in my teens counts. As a chiropractor and the daughter of a chiropractor… I asked my dad for a reduction in my youth. He flat out said no! ā€œ You’ll make some man very happy one dayā€ šŸ˜‚ I would never have intentionally added to my chest (ouch), I’ve never been put under and I’m terrified of it. So….yeah, God gave me these for free. <...

Why is it more comfortable to stand on one leg and not the other?

This is just my observations and theories from many years of treating patients. The android pelvis tends to be more capable of providing balance to the lumbar spine when weight is applied evenly to both legs. It is narrower and taller than the gynaecoid pelvis which is wider and more oval in shape. My female patients tend to complain therefore of not feeling stable when standing upright on both legs and resort to placing weight unevenly on one-leg to feel more stabilized. This leads to an imb...

Yes! I keep a curve in my back while sitting in a chair and while I work.

The most commonly herniated discs are in the lumbar spine at L4-L5 and L5-S1. The lumbar region of the spine is a C-shape curvature that must be maintained for the health of the lumbar discs and facets. I keep seeing newer automobile vehicles increase the curvature the WRONG way each year to slouch and compress the entire spine! Slouching initially feels good because there is an immediate release of pressure off the joints and nerves of the spine. However, over time this compression deteriora...

Stress and Cortisol

Keeping cortisol levels balanced is important. Cortisol is often referred to as the ā€œstress hormoneā€ because levels increase in response to stressful situations. It is a steroid hormone made by the adrenal glands. Not enough cortisol leads to conditions such as Addison’s disease (fatigue, low blood pressure, muscle weakness) while high levels leads to Cushing’s syndrome (high blood pressure, rapid weight gain, osteoporosis). Therefore, keeping stress levels in check throughout the day...

I am cooking for myself this Mother’s Day

I can’t eat out anymore. I’m not sure what is happening with our foods here in the USA, but it isn’t just me…have you seen all the gluten free foods in the isles lately? Where did all this sensitivity come from? I don’t remember any of this until maybe 12 years ago. Patients come to me half scared to death something is wrong with them when their PCPs have said they can’t find anything (after thousands of dollars spent on scans, tests, biopsies etc.) I have to be careful what oils,...

Continuing Ed for Both California and Florida Licenses

I can’t believe they held a seminar THIS weekend. Yea, I’m going to be stuck in a classroom for two straight days. Luckily all of the instructors are super helpful and I’m brushing up on my skills. Always great to receive feedback from one’s colleagues. My worst critic is not myself in this case… šŸ˜… You know I’m going to be adding my own take to everything I learn.

Getting some Vitamin D and Infrared before Going into the Office

Just my opinion here - take it for what you will. The trick is not sunscreen ( I haven't applied sunscreen in years), it is not to BURN. Everyone has to figure out how long it takes themselves to to turn a light pink, slight red or brown for darker skins (granted this varies throughout the year) and cut that in half - that is how much sun you need EVERY day to keep Vitamin D levels optimal. Vitamin D is involved in thousands of biological processes in the body. While supplementing is availabl...

It's the year of the dragon!

Deep breathing offers a range of benefits for both physical and mental well-being. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Stress Reduction: Deep breathing triggers the body's relaxation response, which helps lower stress levels by reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. It promotes a sense of calmness and relaxation, making it an effective tool for managing stress and anxiety.

  • Improved Respiratory Functio...

A little bit of stretching between patients.

Tight hamstrings can alter the tilt of the pelvis, causing increased strain on the lower back muscles and ligaments. By stretching the hamstrings, you can help to restore a more neutral pelvic position, reducing strain on the lower back. REMEMBER! Keep a lordosis while stretching the hamstrings (as I am doing here) ! Going too hard and rounding the low back can put unnecessary strain on the lumbar discs.
