Flashman Concept Sketch

Has anyone dreamed of a good looking Flashman before? Well, now you don't have to.
Giorgio Espinos and I worked together on this one, taking his old design and updating it to fit into our official aesthetic.

I think we've managed to skip "ironically cool" and go straight to truly good looking with this one. What do you think?
Bonus effect here, now you don't have to buy any sub-par knockoff mechs either :P

Image is public, so feel free to share it around.

I really like it, I just think it needs a bit more thigh to lower leg ratio, and the lower legs could be a tad thicker, but it, in general, looks great!

Joshua Bressel

Nope all wrong try again. I can't find much of anything that I like about it. The arms look like cigars and cigarettes stacked on each other, the lower legs are a little small, and the head looks giant for the rest of the mech. Also it kind of ruins the trash can like look of the original.

MechaParade

There is something about the legs on this one that just doesn't appeal. The lower leg assembly to be precise. The "shin" and feet areas just look out of proportion to me.

Martin Sweeney

The "feet" and "ankles" feel a little small to me, like somebody cut off the "toes" (as it were). Maybe it's me, but it doesn't look like there's enough to keep the mech standing without constantly checking your balance. Overall I like the look of the mech. It just feels like it should be ready to fall over at any moment.

I love the Flashman. It seems like the legs need to be a small bit longer and larger but I like your take on this one. It needs to look different from the Imp for sure!

Todd W

I've always liked the Flashman because it seems like a "walking orb" design done right (whereas the Osts always were a bit awkward, and the Imp is just... no). I think this version of it preserves all the iconic characteristics while making it a little more aggressive, which is cool by me. Can't wait to put it in my WoBbie force!

Robert Schuster

OK, one more thing. The three weapons center torso, sort of reminds me of a boom box speakers. :)

Was there a knockoff Flashman before the Strato one that is coming out soon?

Anthony Scroggins

General rule is EVERYTHING needs to be touched up in order to get a plastic miniature treatment. Plastic mold making is so costly there's little reason to not redesign them while you're at it. Last time they didn't heed that logic? Last starter set and the AS packs. That didn't go well. Most of the vehicles look terrible, but could easily look amazing if redone. Easier then mechs.

Anthony Scroggins

I kept the somewhat triangle shape of the LL housings. I let Giorgio retain how he mixed it up with the rest.

Anthony Scroggins

Definitely an overall ovaloid torso, or circle with the middle extruded/stretched. Arms do have two points of articulation, but it is somewhat limited.

Anthony Scroggins

I really like it. Ankles and possibly feet a little thicker to take the weight of the top half, and it'd be amazing.

I was really curious to see if we'd be getting the fancy Star League variants for ComStar players, or the downgraded ones for everyone else. Good call here. My first impression is that it's remarkably busy, maybe in an attempt to distance itself from one of the smoothest mechs of old. Let a one-off manufacturer build their mech a little rounder! The big, blocky shoulders and the super-thick arms draw attention away from the torso, but you've already changed the torso so much that I don't think you need to pull us away from it. The shoulders are probably the one piece I'd ask to take a second look at. The cockpit isn't to my taste (can't unsee a squid beak) but painting over the bottom segment should be enough. Does it make sense for the arm-mounted large lasers to be so much larger than the CT LL? It doesn't look like it has room to the sides or top or bottom to fit whatever goes into one. But looking at the arms more, I can see the callback to the old shape and that makes me happy. It was the old model's best feature. I'm happy that knockoffs existed because they drew me into the game more than the official minis did (shortly before the current boxes came out), but their take on the Flashman makes me think of a Big Mac. This one's taking me some getting used to, but it looks dangerous.

Carlos Sempere

That is an improvement. I'm curious, you mentioned your "official aesthetic". Do any of the more conventional vehicles in BTU fit your aesthetic or will those be recieving face lifts as well?

Tyler Erickson

I'm not a fan of the arms, but otherwise a solid redesign. To me the smooth half moon "shield" style arms have always been a distinctive feature of the Flashman.

The top half looks fantastic.... the legs though... Maybe try humanoid? Maybe legs like the Sphinx?

Andrew McKenna

Also, YAY NEW ART!

Overall, I like it. The beak, though... IDK. The arms look kind of chunky in relation to the rest of it. The view angle seems to make it look like the arm articulates pretty directly off the shoulder? I'm betting the vague impression that the torso is sort of... C shaped?

It does have a beak.

I must have been one of the few fans of the old design, but this has started to win me over! Can’t wait to see the redesigned Ostroc! Put an Ostroc, Ostsol Flashman and crab in a lance and you have some laser goodness just waiting to happen!

Robert Moore

I wonder if you have the same problem I had. I was confused looking at it. It's very cluttered and at first glance it seems....billboard like?....like the arms are joined at the waist. Only after focusing first on the gap between the hip and the arm and pulling back from there can I see it much clearer. I do like it a lot.

Christopher Eastwood

WOW!

This looks pretty solid. I do miss the sleeker, curved lines of the original -- you know, a flashbulb 'mech that looked like a bulb... or a butt plug... whatever floats your boat. But this is good. I think in particular what stands out is that this version has legs that could actually function. Only major critique I would offer would be to remove the bottom glass pane and replace it with an armor panel, but minor quibble. Otherwise, it looks like a chunky 75 ton 'mech.

first impression is that it looks like an angry baby chicken. and the ankles are too small to support it.

My preconceived notion that the Flashman was a middle-aged Urbie has been dashed! TBH, I never really noticed before that it had digitigrade legs. Definitely looks like a beastly 75-tonner now (though I do have to quibble slightly about those thin ankles - sorry!). Now, if only the name could be changed to something equally cool...

Zachary Parliman

Wow that actually does look sharp. ESPECIALLY considering source inspiration was basically a dog turd. The Flashman is not my favorite mech (to be fair it has a goofy name) - but this has me wanting to dink around with them in game to see how they play!

this is my all time favorite Laser Anti Air support Mech, And now She look's like She always should (instead of like her legs would snap if she moved! my wife just heard my wallet grown as I wiped up my drool. if your intent was to get me to buy several you have succeeded again.

Jeffery Smith

Damn it . Opens wallet again !

Charles granger

I am trying to figure out for the life of me what bothers me about this. I am thinking the angled shoulders are to big and the rounded torso/head too small. But i would have to see an iteration to be sure

James Bixby

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i could totally buy this as either a Blakist model, or the succession wars non ferro fibrous model.

James Bixby

Is that the one who's example image is painted up in Kurita white? It's a huge improvement, but still not up to modern par by a long shot, still a miniature weak enough that it'd keep people from putting a good design on the table.

Anthony Scroggins

Going to have to be the naysayer again I'm afraid! This one's a miss for me tbh. The half moon shape of the outer arm housings is part of what makes the flashman imo. Also the most recent resculpt modernised it really well already.

Andrew Dickinson

I think Flashman has a fair number of fans... just hard to get past looking like an anal suppository on really wonky legs. thankfully no longer an issue

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Pfff.......it's perfect. XD

Jordan G Roberts

hmmm... shins/ankles look a little fragile, but overall, I like it!

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Woah......ugly duckling into omega level asskicker. Excellent work!

James Doughty

As one of the world's few Flashman fans, I am genuinely impressed at this. Nice work!

Alex F

You've just converted the Flashman from derpugly to badass!! :D
