UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S2E19 - Manhunt

UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S2E19 - Manhunt

Comments

On the one hand, I feel bad for Lwaxana as she's clearly lonely. On the other hand, nobody would think for a second that Picard running around unilaterally announcing he's marrying a woman young enough to be his daughter who had no interest in him was appropriate. Like hormones, I get it, but that can't excuse everything. You gotta draw lines somewhere. I get she doesn't mean any harm, but as an introvert, she would be a little much for me to deal with, even if I do find the character entertaining. I can understand why Homm drinks so much😂. Credit where it's due, she did prevent a bombing. I find it funny that Worf of all people is the "woke" one lecturing Wesley on inclusiveness. I guess he would have felt like an outsider growing up. Still the Antedians were pretty weird, no 2 ways about it. Cool makeup though. Nice seeing a return of the Dixon Hill program, if only briefly, and as a place to hide from and later distract Lwaxana. The call back to Data(Carlos) being from South America was a nice touch too. As to sex on the holodeck, let's face it, that would have been a driving factor behind the development of the technology. Sure, training, R&D, and virtual travel would be big drivers as well, but much like the internet, I guarantee porn would be a big driver of the tech. As to who has the unenviable job of cleaning up, in most cases probably nobody. Riker did tell Brenna last episode that the ship cleans itself. Not one of my favourite episodes, but I don't hate it.

Timothy Nikiforovs

To be fair, in Up The Long Ladder Riker did say "you don't need to do that, the ship will clean itself".

Timothy Nikiforovs

Seasons 1-2 I'd say are uneven, season 7 I would call tired, and the season's lows are perhaps the lowest of the show, and they're frequent. The fewest gems of any season.

JGoss

@Clyde Frog *bites

Jovet

Maybe I was too harsh. Certainly Season 7 is uneven.

Anthony Bernacchi

God, I forgot they probably would have no idea who the hell that is! Yeah, I know! Getting old sucks.

Clyde Frog

@Michael Nemo Ensign Gonez (one syllable)

Jovet

Oh my. This is the first I've heard of this! LOL!

Jovet

I only find her kinda annoying in this one.

Jovet

I dare say about all of the males are meat to certain holders of the Sacred Chalice of Reeks...

Jovet

I can imagine the boys scratching their heads and asking "Who is Mick Fleetwood." LOL Face it, we're old ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

StealthMomo

Fun Fact: One of the people in the fish suits is actually Mick Fleetwood lmao.

Clyde Frog

It's a pescatarian episode for sure.

Ca$hWednesday

For that I liked Ensign Gomez. ;)

Michael Nemo

Can't say much more. Just not as of TNG season 1-2.

JGoss

@James Goss Where is that canonized?

Jovet

They can

JGoss

@James Goss "Midlife" is code for "menopause." Her not being human doesn't matter, unless Betazoids can get pregnant in their 60s or 70s, which would be news to me.

Jovet

John Tesh a couple episodes ago in The Icarus Factor

JGoss

Betazoids aren't humans though, and it's not menopause

JGoss

45:55 It's NOT Vulcan Pon Farr. Mrs. Troi getting porked wouldn't help her read others' thoughts any clearer. It was just really easy for her to read the assassins' thoughts since their "minds were so simple she could read them in her sleep." Reading others' thoughts, especially males, is just skewed by her condition. She "sees" what she WANTS to see.

Jovet

Accurate the person that said this episode feel was that as guture episodes

Scarpad’s Domain

I agree, and it's a widespread opinion.

Anthony Bernacchi

No meat, only fish.

Anthony Bernacchi

Having a female go into "severe heat" right around menopause doesn't make any evolutionary sense. 👎

Jovet

She IS the plucky comic relief.

Jovet

I've always rolled my eyes at Lwaxana Troi. Ugh. Insufferable.

Michael Nemo

would hate to be on the hollow deck cleanup crew. just nasty. I know they use a mix of transporter and fields along with projections, but stuff has to go somewhere.

Lt Dan I scream

5:50 Glorious seasons 3-6, I'd say. Season 7 is worse than 1-2 IMO.

JGoss

Loved this reaction

Andrea R

You have to have zero sense of humor not to enjoy Lwaxana episodes.

HS

I enjoy Lwaxana episodes. I know some people find her annoying, but I just find her funny. She reminds me of one of my aunts. In a good way. 😂

Lady Beyond The Wall

I always felt that this episode solidified the way for the format for the rest of the seasons both story format and characters.

A Surprisingly Moist Fart

This episode begins a tradition of famous people wanting to be guests on Trek but not recognized, in this instance one of the silent Antideans is legendary musician Mick Fleetwood under the mask.

Alan Thompson

Not a lot of "meat" on this episode, but it's hard not to have fun with it.

(Although I have seen all of TNG before, this rewatch will be the first time I am seeing TNG on Blu-ray from “Manhunt” onwards, except for the series finale.) The Microsoft Word Editor feature objects to the word “Manhunt” when checking for “inclusiveness,” suggesting “Search” or “Organized Search” as alternatives! “Terry Devereaux,” the credited writer of “Manhunt,” was a pseudonym for Tracy Tormé (who was a man, by the way). As with “The Royale,” on which he used the name “Keith Mills,” Tormé was deeply unhappy with the rewrites of his script; as a result, “Manhunt” was the final episode he wrote before leaving the TNG staff. (The rewrites emphasized the Lwaxana story at the expense of the Dixon Hill story.) Tormé later co-created "Sliders," a sci-fi TV series about the multiverse. He passed away on January 4 of this year. During the discussion of “Haven” in Season 1, Alex and Josh said it was impressive how Nurse Chapel had “pulled off” playing Lwaxana Troi. In fact, the reverse was true: it was Lwaxana who was “pulling off” playing Nurse Chapel all along. Lwaxana Troi was what Majel Barrett Roddenberry was like in real life. Gene Roddenberry offered his wife the role in “Haven” by telling her, “Majel, I have a great part for you, and guess what – you don’t have to act!” You should now be able to understand why Barrett never enjoyed playing Nurse Chapel, considering her too much of a “goody-two-shoes.” Prolific character actor Robert Costanzo (Slade Bender) is best known for the voice role of Harvey Bullock in the DC Animated Universe. In addition to playing Agent Harry in "Total Recall," he also appeared in "Die Hard 2" (which also featured Colm Meaney) and in the 1985 Twilight Zone episode “Healer.” Mick Fleetwood, the co-founder, drummer, and leader of Fleetwood Mac, plays one of the Antedeans, and was willing to shave off his beard to do so if the TNG production team guaranteed he would be either beamed up or beamed down during the episode. (The Antedeans beam up to the Enterprise during the cold open.) Rhonda Aldrich reprises the role of Madeline, Dixon Hill’s secretary, from “The Big Goodbye.” This episode includes an exceptionally rare occurrence of Picard addressing Counselor Troi as “Deanna.” I never noticed Deanna and Lwaxana Troi’s black irises until I watched TNG on Blu-ray. I agree with other commenters that Lwaxana’s are more noticeable than usual in this episode – due to the Phase, perhaps? I find Picard’s speech about the Second World War irritating rather than amusing; Picard has no understanding of the concept of role-playing. Sexual intercourse with holodeck people is, of course, possible; Riker and Minuet would surely have made love in “11001001” if Picard had not arrived. “Manhunt” is only the second TNG episode in which LeVar Burton does not appear as Geordi, the first having been “A Matter of Honor.” Interestingly, various Internet commentators have stated that the episode mentions Geordi despite his non-appearance, but in fact no one names him in dialogue: the “mention” of him comes from Mr. Homn, with a hand gesture which the two of you immediately understood (but which would be incomprehensible to any viewers for whom “Manhunt” was their first TNG episode). Lwaxana is presumably not attracted to Mr. Homn because he is not human (although she is convinced that he is attracted to her, which may well be true). Dexter L. Clay, an NFL player, actor, musician, author, and filmmaker, played “Chad,” who never received a name in any of his appearances. Clay was also Michael Dorn’s stand-in and was the second person to appear on-screen in “Encounter at Farpoint,” following Patrick Stewart. He died of cancer in 2017 at the age of 61. Two major missed opportunities in this episode: Majel Barrett and Diana Muldaur, both TOS veterans, have no scenes together; and why does Lwaxana never consider Chief O’Brien as a potential mate?

Anthony Bernacchi

Dexter Clay, the African-American security guard that you have noticed as a recurring background character - this is his last episode. He passed away from cancer in 2017 at the age of 61. RIP I would have put this in the patron takes, but by the time I saw the post it was probably too late and you might have already recorded. A shame no one else mentioned it.

David Brown

All he wanted was a sandwich.

Steven Johnson

Hehehehe one of my favorites. A lot of my favorites may not have the best plot, but I'm still entertained and love your reactions. Majel Barrett's Lwaxana always\ makes me laugh.

Firekrys FWO

“You know what? This is making me think I could get on board with a manhunt”

Josh (Target Audience)

I was hunted once. I'd just came back from 'Nam. I was hitching through Oregon and some cop started harassing me. Next thing you know, I had a whole army of cops chasing me through the woods! I had to take 'em all out--it was a bloodbath
