From the first time I saw a photo of Sugar I knew that when our paths crossed we were going to do something amazing. Her presence in front of the camera is a think of perfection, so when the opportunity finally presented itself on a trip through LA I wanted our location to be equally as amazing, so we decided to try and shoot at the rather notorious state beach El Matador.
El Matador can be very difficult to shoot at as it is incredibly popular, and the tide can make the beach much smaller and more difficult to hike away from people. For our shoot we walked as far away from the crowds as we could, and shot in the shade of one of the many beautiful rock formations. It gave us the perfect light on Sugar, and a great way to kind of blow out the background since the harsh sun still was on the ocean. I switched back and forth between my 85mm F1.4 and my 70-200mm F2.8 for these. Opting to get much further away and zoom in for any of the full length photos.
We shot for about 40 minutes keeping a watchful eye out for anyone that was coming our way, and protest at the nudity, and Franco The Pug my ever watchful assistant let us know well in advance if anyone was getting to close. There was a lot of taking the dress off and then putting it back on to avoid getting in trouble. Having an assistant with hands would have probably been nice. Regardless we got an absolute ton of images. I still revisit my raw folder frequently and dig up new ones I should have edited before.
I am especially excited because Sugar and I are having a reunion next month and will be shooting at one of my favorite East Coast locations as well as doing some photos for Temperance.
