Play to Find Out, S4E2.5: Ghosts, Busted

Comments

I second the comments of something like Ghostbusters being a good first RPG. I feel like most people tend to play an idealized, or just different version of themselves the first few times they roleplay (me but a wizard, me but I get to be more heroic than I feel in daily life), so just ASSUMING you're a fictional version of yourself seems in line with first time roleplayers to me. It's a good way to on-board them with 5 minutes of explanation and then just get on to letting them experience why the hobby is so fun.

Hello from California! Quinns, your "neutral American accent" was pretty great! You really hit those trailing R's. I did a doubletake, and had to make sure you were still the one talking.

Talking about the stress of making sure the live play stays on track and how much use you got from the adventure being a set of specific scenes in a specific order really makes me want to repeat that Paranoia XP suggestion from last week; there is an expectation that players might have only half an idea of what they're doing (partly because they may be distracted by other events, and partly because no one and no thing in the setting can be trusted) and so you are encouraged to just have external forces sweep along characters at times. For example, have some high-ranking NPC misidentify the player team and shanghai them to go do "their job" at the next location.

The wait is agony but worth it and I know work of this quality takes time. Good stuff all of you involved

That's where my mind went too.

I think Kult, especially the first or second English language editions would be a very PTFO compatible horror game. It has a wonky system, a sprawling but compelling world building. Tonewise it is a lot like the first 30 minutes of the Matrix but more occult. It is a great artifact of 90s and early 00s.

So are they playing Wraith the Oblivion next?
