The Original Prototype Of The Time Machine - And The Lessons I Learned Making It

I think you guys are going to appreciate this one! A lot of you started supporting me because of my time machine project... but what if I told you that the original prototype wasn't even a time machine?

Yup! Originally this project was actually a memory palace that let me explore my own memories throughout a huge temple. Touching those memories opened "memory portals" that allowed me to see into my past in immersive fashion.

So what changed? Why didn't I ever release this video? Well, upon finishing this I couldn't help but feel that it could be more. I've always wanted to take Youtube a little bit more seriously and make fully-fledged documentaries of my work, so maybe this could be a good project to start! That plus the fact that I had already posted many 2-minute videos of my projects and they never seemed to get too much traction... So this was an opportunity to try something new instead of the old strategy that I knew just wasn't working.

So I put this video on hold, sat down for about a month and attempted to create a longer video in a vlog format. I made 10 minutes of it...... and then decided I didn't like it. The concept was too dense - I needed to communicate the idea in a simpler way, in a way that everyone would understand but also be excited by.

And let me tell you that when I told my friends I was discarding this video they all disagreed with me. Everyone was telling me the video was already good and all that I had to do was post it. But I didn't want the video to be good. I wanted it to be great.

So I started from scratch again, but this time with a different approach: I called the project a time machine (a concept everyone understands), rebuilt it from scratch so it looked the part and created a video with a more cinematic style that focused on snappy narration, music & emotional... and 4 months later, the video you all know and love was born!  <3

All of this taught me a few things:

- Never settle for good. Always go for great.

- Making quality things takes time, trial and error - and to pursue great you need to abandon lots of ideas that you worked on but simply aren't working.

- Keep your ideas simple. If I can't explain a project in a single sentence to the average person, is too complicated and I have to go back to the drawing board.

Hope you guys enjoyed this little peek behind the scenes, and hopefully that shows you why my projects take a little longer to make! I'd love to keep doing more if you guys enjoy reading these, so let me know if you made it all the way until the end <3

And thank you as always for supporting me. You are the only reason I can do this full time now.

Love,

Lucas

Lucas you are magical

Thanks for sharing Lucas. Your lessons learned are great. I think rapid(ish) iteration is important. This way you can align your ideas with feedback from the audience you're intending to reach. Also take with a grain of salt your sponsors, friends and family as we are always biased in your favor! 😃

You really don't have to hahah I'm actually quite ashamed of it, but I wanted to post a small link here for those who are interested in the creative process

I'll watch the 10-minute version later, but thanks for sharing this, Lucas. ^_^
