Jenny's Tale Guitar Tutorial (part 4)
Added 2023-12-10 17:00:05 +0000 UTCIn this video I walk through the songwriting strategies for jenny's tale and talking about setting the scene and creating emotion through metaphors, oxymorons and all that good stuff.
Hopefully you guys can get some inspiration and maybe use some of these techniques in your own writing :) The main thing is just having fun with it and trying out different approaches in order to help the listener experience the same image you've painted in your head.
go give it a try... you never know what u may come up with!!!
big love guys enjoyyyyy!!! x o

2024-01-08 08:30:14 +0000 UTCIncredible origination
2023-12-24 21:32:03 +0000 UTCIt's a heartbreaking story beautifully told
2023-12-12 20:06:55 +0000 UTCI, too, would like to see the video!
2023-12-12 16:58:45 +0000 UTCExcellent, so interesting to learn about the thought process and the background story behind it.
2023-12-12 08:44:24 +0000 UTCThis was truly fantastic!
2023-12-12 03:59:16 +0000 UTCThis was great! You always make it seem so easy and logical ❤️
2023-12-12 01:44:37 +0000 UTC🤣 that was the first thing I saw! And I was like, oh boy there's so many things on his mind. Atleast you can still see the full words as oppose to just letters😂
2023-12-11 13:22:47 +0000 UTC“assault rifle from the get go like an AK” after the fast rapping sex analogy i definitely heard “naked” the first time and was momentarily confused 🤣 I don’t think you know much you are crushing this Pateeon thing. It feels almost criminal that it’s so inexpensive, and I hope that you might consider added a support tier or a monthly zoom call tier or something in the future (I think a zoom call fan thing is where RikaShae got Harry Mack to do the freestyle for his drawing of you but I could be wrong) especially because your crew is absolutely fanstastic at what they do, and I’m sure there are a lot of financial considerations when you have more full time staff. I hope this recorded video format has been easy to manage during your more difficult treatment months, you’re well suited to it and an excellent teacher. It’s so incredible to hear you connect the strings together into this tragic and beautiful web, and there are things I didn’t realize after my many watches. As a fellow ADHDer, I can’t imagine how you focused on anything at all with the chat going, it was so fast 🤯 I’m still waiting on vinyl and a batch of cds (from Amazon no less) that just shipped… but I wanted you to know that your team has been really really good at communicating (and apologizing, although that wasn’t necessary) about the delays. I’m so thrilled that you guys smashed through so many sales projections that two months later they are still catching up!! It has made me happy that you’re continuing to beat the odds and surpass expectations. My 7 year old song wants to learn guitar because of you, so we got him one and hopefully he’ll start lessons in January. There’s going to be a whole generation of musicians now, because of you ❤️
2023-12-11 12:14:54 +0000 UTCGreat insights, thank you 🥰
2023-12-11 08:22:41 +0000 UTCI can't believe you wrote that at 18 😭
2023-12-11 06:00:29 +0000 UTCThank you so much! Hearing the breakdown and bits of info surrounding it was really great. 😀
2023-12-11 05:36:05 +0000 UTCAgree excellent questions
2023-12-11 05:08:38 +0000 UTCI saw that lololol so many tabs open haha
2023-12-11 05:06:24 +0000 UTCThis is fantastic!!! Please stop apologising for going on tangents as this is where you explain things in more details. I would love to see the video you talked about in here. You are very good at explaining things, which gives me inspiration to try song writing. I have thought about doing it for many many years, but did not have the confidence. So i’m going to soak up all the advice you are putting up!!! :) Hope you are coping with your treatment!!! Hugs 💖💖💖
2023-12-11 05:03:23 +0000 UTCYou are such a fantastic storyteller, it’s great to hear your thought process as you set the stage and develop the characters. Never apologize for tangents or the length of your videos. It’s why we are here. When you transition to Screech’s Tale I would love to hear more about the Instagram stories and the poem you shared during the 360 live. I appreciated that you didn’t simply make him a villain but allowed us to see his humanity. I think it’s easy for us to forget he was only 14. And can’t wait for you to unpack Violet’s Tale!

2023-12-11 03:08:54 +0000 UTCThis was a good idea! Thanks Ren!
2023-12-11 02:35:03 +0000 UTCMore of these lyrical breakdowns would be very very appreciated! This is so insightful… Thanks Ren and Kai

2023-12-11 02:15:42 +0000 UTCI loved this so much! It's awesome being able to see some of your techniques to your story writing, considering you are a master bard and wordsmith 🤗💜🐷

2023-12-11 01:47:36 +0000 UTCThis is exactly what I’m here for! Thanks for that lyrical breakdown and these songwriting insights. You‘re such a talented lyricist and storyteller! After 10 months of listening to or watching the tales trilogy several times a week, I can now admit that I initially misheard the line „James, he grew up to be a kid of the street“, when I first came across the tales and got „Jay-Z grew up to…“ instead of „James, he grew up to…“ and somehow it kinda made sense at first listen. 🤣🤷🏻♀️
2023-12-10 23:58:40 +0000 UTCThis is cool. You actually have like the best Patreon. It was interesting to hear the inspiration behind the tales, and the song writing process. I’m looking forward to more of this.
2023-12-10 23:48:21 +0000 UTCWell hello sir!
2023-12-10 23:02:27 +0000 UTCThis was wonderful , Never be worried about the length of any video you decide to share with us I'm pretty sure that like myself everyone else here would listen to you no mater how long also if time is a issue there's always the pause button so we can come back whenever we have time .I actually include any of your speeches/talking videos/interviews and whatever in my youtube Ren playlists just as much as I listen to your music because you always seem to have something interesting to say and a fascinating way of expressing yourself & just like Zack Sang said on your interview you have a great speaking voice ,you're very pleasing on the ears .... Sooo thanku for this 👍🫶
2023-12-10 22:41:54 +0000 UTCHahaha. The sex analogy is fckin great man :D
2023-12-10 21:46:21 +0000 UTCHere! I wanna see that video you were talking about! 😁 Thanks, that was a great lesson! If one is completely new to storytelling/songwriting, it is very hard to figure out how a creative process like the tales might actually take form - which makes an insight like this invaluable really ❣️
2023-12-10 21:41:51 +0000 UTCI swear I heard an early version recently that was stalagmite. It caught my attention because it was different but actually made more sense. But going back through my YT history, I can’t find where it was.l I heard that.
2023-12-10 20:46:36 +0000 UTC❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
2023-12-10 20:33:51 +0000 UTCNope everyone is stalactite (thank you spell checker.) Like I said it's a better sounding word with the same meaning. Besides, a person would be wider up top than at their feet, so the shape works too.
2023-12-10 20:33:14 +0000 UTCInteresting (and sad) to hear what inspired this trilogy. I love how you developed the story so much over time. Like others, I am so grateful for you sharing your writing and performance processes with us.
Kathleen Kristjansson
2023-12-10 20:28:24 +0000 UTCYep - I misremembered. I thought the 360 video performance was might…it’s not. :)
2023-12-10 20:27:56 +0000 UTCExcellent questions!! Would love to hear Ren speak on these as well.
2023-12-10 20:21:54 +0000 UTCI’ve been wondering what the timeline was of you writing the tales? Did you have the idea for all three parts when you started? You mentioned the intentional misleading so I guess you must have had some idea already. So do you just have a rough story in your head and come back to it over time to really develop the lyrics? There was quite a bit of time between the videos for Jenny’s tale and Violet’s tale. Was the time frame of the writing similar? If so, is that due to your health, adhd, just focused on other things? Would definitely like to see the early video!
2023-12-10 20:18:14 +0000 UTCLike Nick, I would love to know how you choose your locations. You obviously did a lot of this stuff in the middle of the night. Did you have locals yelling at you? Apart from that stuff, this was really fascinating ... just love hearing about the process!
2023-12-10 19:41:07 +0000 UTCThanks for this! Lovely to get an insight into how this piece came about.
2023-12-10 19:34:48 +0000 UTCLove this! This is extremely helpful advice. Going to use these characterization and conceptual tips in my own writing. Thank you so very much. xo.

2023-12-10 19:18:27 +0000 UTCIt’s so amazing to hear you talk about this one… and now finding out that you were 18 when you wrote it! I really hope to see you work as a director some day just like you said you wanted to do. This trilogy is brilliant both technically and emotionally. Thanks for sharing your thought process with us Ren… so very much appreciated mate ☺️💕
2023-12-10 18:55:32 +0000 UTC❤️Ren, I love your storytelling so this was intriguing to hear how your mind works! I would really love it if you could do some piano tutorials? I hope you’re doing well, thanks for starting this Patreon, I’m happy to be able to support you and your team!❤️
2023-12-10 18:55:14 +0000 UTCSo brilliant to hear this breakdown. Excited for you to do this for It's Alright or any other Big Push song for that matter 🙏🖤
2023-12-10 18:47:22 +0000 UTCThank you Ren. Love having a peek behind the curtain of a genius' mind!

2023-12-10 18:24:09 +0000 UTCLoved this approach, man! And I do love It's Alright, so looking forward to it!

2023-12-10 18:22:41 +0000 UTCThankyou that was really interesting and helpful and still practicing on the guitar 🤟
2023-12-10 18:14:55 +0000 UTC3 things. 1st, I can't wait for the piano tutorials come out! 2nd, thank you for showing the breakdown of your creativity and really delving into the science that is your brain. 3rd, you have ALOT of tabs open. ADHDer here, I can relate 🤘
2023-12-10 18:11:14 +0000 UTC95% of my poetry is rhymed. I like the challenge of finding the perfect words to express what I’m trying to say while keeping with the theme. Your writing, along with your delivery and cadence and acting, is what sent me down the rabbit hole to begin with. Hi Ren, where I first learned about you got me curious, but it was the tales that made me a fan. And I was completely and utterly sold once I heard you busking in the I Shot The Sheriff mashup. Great content. Thank you for sharing this with us.
2023-12-10 18:02:47 +0000 UTCVery insightful. Thank you as always. For the record...every version of this song I have listened to does use "stalagtite." In my mind it never mattered, it's a more interesting sounding word than stalagmite, and both are rock formations that change so slowly their movements are inperceivable. Still works, in fact better due to the sharpness of the syllables and the sharpness of the scean. Creative license bro.
2023-12-10 17:51:03 +0000 UTCThis makes me want to sit down and write a story! Begining was always my issue this WILL help, I think.
2023-12-10 17:50:18 +0000 UTCThe multifaceted and complex process of a true artist is both intriguing and interesting ✨
2023-12-10 17:49:43 +0000 UTCVery interesting. I’d love to know if this was fully written and formed when you were 18, or if you went back and refined it over time. If you did, what changes did you make and why? Also, how much of the creative process was conscious and how much of this explanation is reflecting on what you created and trying to understand your own subconscious? I may have missed it, but it would also be interesting to get into the video choices and production - how did you decide the location? (Great graffiti, a spot where you felt less likely to be interrupted or upset people with the performance? Did you try different takes in different spots?) What was the thought process behind the choice of outfit? I’ve seen a lot of reactors resonate with the starter jacket choice in Jenny’s tale (and many people disliking the Cowboys jacket in Screech’s tale - was that deliberate? To play to people’s empathy or antagonism with the characters) Also - the choice to lean against the gate/door as you do the mouth trumpet, which serves to immediately emphasise “oh this is recorded live” because people hear the rattle - was that a conscious decision? How did you decide how far to walk up the alley? Were there particular points where you planned for certain lines to land? I’m glad you pointed out you meant to sing stalagmite - I picked that up in an early listen that “tights come down” and so did some reactors (not many), and I think you did sing mights in other performances. Love the use of the word oxymoron. That became one of my fav words back when we used to trawl the dictionary for new interesting words as a kid (yes, I was that kind of kid). Have you ever consciously sought to expand your vocabulary? Do you think about which words people will know when you are writing and self censor or do you use any word that you know if it is the “right” word for the song and trust your audience to understand? (I can’t think of many examples - but Masochist certainly seemed to confuse a lot of people for example). So many questions - and I love this format of you sharing this insight.
2023-12-10 17:43:48 +0000 UTCThank you for sharing this. ❤️ I am a complete lyrics person so i love to dive into this. Its so nice to hear things pointed out which i realized myself. I gave up writing a long time ago but a few weeks ago somebody just told me to just start doing it for myself again. Well i try.
2023-12-10 17:40:07 +0000 UTCThats a great Video. I can watch you explain things for hours. It couldnt get long enough🤘
2023-12-10 17:37:36 +0000 UTCI'm not musical in any sense but still found this very interesting 🤔
2023-12-10 17:35:23 +0000 UTCThis is exactly why I joined Patreon, things like this really interest me. It intrigues me how you work. Thank you so much for this xx
