Hey folks,
So here is another little gift for you. This is a snare drum where I tried to replicate the Cultist Base Snare drum tone. I recorded a Tama John Blackwell signature snare Drum with 3 microphones.
Then I processed it. The last stage was sending the processed snare yet another time through my Cali FET 1176 Limiter (Mick has I think a couple of those, at least he told me). Anways I have at least one of those units and these are great for many things but especially for drum tones.
So, the snare doesn´t sound super exciting, and not really polished, I know, but it does what it´s supposed to do: Slam and cut through a mix. And when leveled correctly to the rest of the music it serves its purpose.
There is this thing with so many drum samplers and libraries out there:
Many snares sound cool on its own, but once you put them into a mix, they just disappear in the music or start to sound thin. And then you start pushing frequencies here and there and in the end: It´s starts to sound like shit. Now, this is a mixing thing of course, part is processing, getting the right balance yada, yada, yada...don´t forget that.
However, I have the philosophy or general advice: Just because a sound in isolation first may sound a bit stale, doesn´t mean its not working in a mix context. I have many sounds created that sound on its own a bit underwhelming, but once they are part of a song, they normally work extremely well.
Anyways, have a great weekend everyone and whatever you are gonna do, I hope you are having a good time.
Horns up,
Alex
